Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers Teaser Trailer

The tease makes no sense..I can't be the only one who skips past anything and everything that isn't the actual playing part in these games..

Seriously..Magic lore? Was interested in that shit in 1995 when Mishra and Urza were runnin shit.

Love these releases. It's no real thing, but they're damn fun when I want to play a few games. Plus the puzzles are always great.

Says this while getting charged $10-15 a year while nearly paying the same for boosters and the like online.

Hmmm...

Don't get me wrong: I like DotP, but if they made a console port of Magic: Online, I'd stop with DotP.

How do they make money off this, sir? This is exactly why they don't.

Also, because all the online card can be redeemed with real card (once you complete a set) and because the online play gives you access to GP and other real events, it is important that the cost of attending an online even doesn't differ much from the real thing, basically it is the same thing.
Anyway due to the simpler access to a bigger user base, in truth virtual cards tend to be cheaper and there are ways to play almost for free if you invest enough time in learning how the online environment works.

Come on, I used to spend 30-40 dollar a week on M:tG just to remain competitive. (Not counting winnings).

I find it hard to believe that people would just up and stop playing physical card Magic if this game came out. For instance, people play xbox live poker just for fun with no money involved - for fun or training purposes - I can see this being somewhat similar. But yeah, a Magic game like I suggested will never happen.

The reason why they don't let you do full deck customization is because it's a lot easier to control the metagame and prevent a "best deck" from appearing. Otherwise you get Cawblade where everybody plays the same overpowered deck online and you get bored.

I really hope this will be a change of pace, but it wont be. WotC just doesn't like money. They need to slap a new interface on MTGO or allow more customization in DotP or both. I don't understand what the problem is.

Anyone excited for this? Lets hope for less bugs this time around. Its getting ridiculous after so many years that this game has so many bugs.

I'm excited for this, I'm hoping this time around they allow for more options with online play, such as turning off (or at least being able to turn up) the auto advance timer... that stupid thing doesn't give nearly enough time when you are trying to defend against an attack of 25 creatures with 25 of your own, or for you to dig through your deck looking for a card if you don't know exactly what card you want.

I understand the point of the timer for random online play, but I am playing with my friends over skype, I'd much rather it play the same as it does when I am playing alone against computers.

I am sad to see the lack of vita on there, I was hoping that the vita would get a version for me to play to make my multitasking while playing easier (I don't own a single IOS or Android device) oh well, will just have to get it on steam again. Hopefully this time around they don't punish me for owning previous games and preordering... it sucked so much getting deck unlocks forced on me, especially after the fact when I found out the white deck was one of my favorite decks from 2013 and it was mostly pointless to play because I already had all the cards unlocked :/

And you can spend as much or less a week on digital cards and still remain competitive.

Event tickets for $1.00 rares in trades->trade rares you don't want for uncommon/commons. Make deck->win.

The costs balance out when you mind the "you can build any deck you want for a lumpsum fee and putting in as much or as little cash as you want." Versus "pay a lumpsum for a 'theme' deck you can't fix it's flaws or engine/mana problems! Enjoy!"

For those talking about it, I would never ever buy digital cards. I had a hard enough time buying into the physical game. I spent the longest amount of time just using my friend's decks.

I doubt that is true. The reason they won't do full deck customization is they want you to "graduate" to MTGO.

I dunno about now..but like 10 years ago on mtgo you did not have to spend a dime on cards. You bought like 5 dollars in tickets and then tried to barter(scam) yourself a collection on the trade board. I remember doing this exact thing twice. Actually sold my second account for $300 back then.

I loved and still enjoy 2012, bought 2013 and didnt play it much at all. Mostly beucause I didnt find the decks fun/to my taste, and also cause there was like 1 deck that totally ruined 2H mode which is what I play. The decks will be what decides if Ill get 2014 or not, so here's hoping for some more vampire action and less total balance ruining ones!

No argument from me. MTGO is in DESPERATE need of a complete overhaul. Not only of the software, but of the business model too.

I often wonder if they consciously don't want to have a really great online game. If I wanted to play magic, and picked up DotP, then wanted more than that so I pick up MTGO. Once I hit a brick wall of frustration with MTGO, they only realistic (legal) option is buying the cards.

It's unfortunate really. MTGO is barely an upgrade from Apprentice and it kind of soured me on the whole experience. As far as I know they still don't have high resolution art in their own freaking game. You zoom in and it's all a blurry mess.

I have to admit, I'm a little excited to try that sealed mode leaked in the achievements so I'll probably end up getting this. That trailer did nothing for me though.

And yeah, I'd play more of MTGO but the interface and pricing completely turn me off the game.

it's is up for pre-purchase on Steam now, release date is June 26
can't wait to lose another hundred or so hours to this

This time I won't get the pre-order. For some stupid reason the pre-orders keep getting unlocked later than the normal release. I'll just buy it directly on launch day instead.

Sorry but that makes no sense.

Wizards make a ton of money on the Duels annual release, on MTGO and on the physical cards. A lot of the suggestions here would dramatically reduce the amount they earn. Would it be great to be able to get a game with every card in it - absolutely. Would it be great to buy a Duels game that completely replicated the full game instead of the restrictions for ÂŁ15? Absolutely.

But Wizards makes piles of cash with the current model, and Magic is still growing as a hobby (Innistrad was their biggest selling set I believe, although haven't seen if the new Ravnica set has overtaken it). Their model works for them as a company.

Re. MTGO - it is easily the worse piece of software I have used in years. I am still staggered they screwed over the original designers of it and then left themselves in a hole where they couldn't actually program their own game, and perplexed by why the huge revamp and new client they are in open beta for still plays like a piece of software from 1998. It is easily the most unintuitive piece of garbage I've used. Decipher, a much smaller now bankrupt ccg company, used to have an online version of its Lord of the Rings game that even 12 years ago was superior in every way to the newe MTGO client. It's that bad.
