Magical Drop V dropping on Steam (November 15th)

Shane Mentioned over a year ago that they were aiming for the "Value Priced" bracket during the E3, maybe 10, maybe 5.

So... yeah, we gotta wait. People have been asking Golgoth the price all over, yet they keep saying "publisher hasn't released this info yet!"

Magic Land–Nov. 15, 2012–UTV Ignition Games has today announced the worldwide release of the anticipated Magical Drop V for PC. The game is available on Steam for $9.99. Developed by Golgoth Studio, Magical Drop V updates the retro puzzler with high-definition graphics and sound, an in-depth multiplayer experience, and the addition of the never-before-released Ghostlop game mode.

Full Press release here.

Omg... I didn't know anything about magical drop IV also! On which platform can I play it?

Magical Drop V is PC (Steam) only right now. Other platforms "later". (I wouldn't get my hopes up unless it sells gangbusters on Steam, considering this is coming out a year late as it is.)

I guess they're counting Magical Drop F as the fourth game in the series - there was no "Magical Drop IV".

Neat game. Not 100% sure what I'm doing though. It plays like a faster version of critter crunch without the critter eating mechanic. It's more twitch than puzzle game right? Or am I missing something? Probably should read the tutorial.

Arguably, "they" don't. Golgoth is out of France, I think. Not feeling the art, but I'm pleased with the Steam support.
Oh no kidding. Didn't know they switched devs. This sort of game would be great on iOS, MD on the go would be an amazing little time killer. Hell, I'm just glad these little arcade titles are still finding audiences today :)

You mean... Critter Crunch plays like a slower version of Magical Drop! :) MD is much more about attacking enemies with speedy combos, and thinking very fast on your feet, yet. You want to aim for combos of lines made, one after the other. The slight pause in bubble movement upon a line destruction helps set up the next burst, and the next, etc. I guess you could call it twitchy, but I'd call it a competitive puzzler!

The Ghost Lop guys play differently, kinda like Bust-a-Move. That game never had an official full release, so having it's gameplay here is a very nice bonus.

10bux? Bought.

When the press release says Ignition as the publisher, it doesn't mean that Ignition which did godawful localizations and recently shuttered its doors, does it?

Of course there's been a dev switch; the original dev went under almost a decade ago. This is the first release in the series in 13 years (we're just going to pretend Magical Drop Touch doesn't exist).

Are you guys that have it in the US? UK here and still got no buy button up on Steam.

No buy button on mobile Steam here. Golgoth was giving codes away on Facebook and Twitter up until about an hour ago, so anyone who's playing probably got one of those.

It seems laggy here when I play it on steam, its a poor port :(

By definition it's not a port since this is the original platform it was developed for.

It definitely feels less responsive than MD3 but it's playable. The biggest problems I've run into so far:

  • The sound outputted at crazy high volume when I had more than two speakers enabled. Dialing it back down to stereo fixed it.
  • Game won't respond to "Esc" at all, no matter what I do. Not sure if it's because I'm in Japanese locale or if the game is only coded for French keyboards or something. If the first menu I navigated into is not the control settings to change to Xbox controller, I would have had no choice but Alt+F4 to get out.
Playing with an arcade stick.

Im having the same issue. Had to close it the hard way because I couldn't go back.

Also, I guess I need to watch a tutorial or something. My first three attempts were all rated "A+" but I got my ass beat pretty quickly.

I had really long load times and choppy sound. I closed Chrome and both of those issues went away. Strange.'

Also, when you change your controls, it no longer responds to other input devices besides the one you selected. So once I switched from Keyboard to my arcade stick, it no longer responded to input from my keyboard. So that's why the game stopped responding to Esc.

No, I had the Esc problem from the beginning. I didn't change controls at all in my first boot, instead going to Sound to try to fix the massive volume coming out of it. I was left with no ability to get out of the Sound menu at all except forcibly closing the game.

Not sure what's going on, but I've been trying online games, which has been... well, it just plain isn't working. The actions going on in the opponent's screen make no sense whatsoever - I'll look over and either see it scrolling 4-5 playfields worth of stuff way past bottom, then a second later it'll be empty and I've lost due to the opponent reaching quota. Also, both the matches I've played ended with the game locking up and me having to kill it with Task Manager.

I more just concerned with how responsive and smooth this game is. All the other complaints in that destructiod review sounded like personal preference for things that don't bother me.

Is it running at 60 frames? When you say it's not as responsive do you mean there is input lag?

Haven't purchased it yet on Steam (I don't... really use steam! But still might buy..), but the people on the Facebook page for the game are really going into detail over what they like and don't like. After watching MDF on Youtube some today, the pattern and "autocombo" mechanics sounds pretty similiar to that game...

...but the fact that all players don't start out with the same board sounds kinda bad? I guess it emphasizes the "puzzle" aspect, but competitively, makes it feel like maybe 1 player got an advantage?

The ability to not pick up falling blocks sounds like a big oversight. I thought I saw Shane doing this in the old preview, too... hmm.

I wonder if many of these odd issues of movement speed, or block-pick-ups, have anything to do with the fact the game is now made to work with online play? A few frames of input delay and taking away some of the more dynamic movement options WOULD help the netcode not have to deal with as much info...

They already note on the facebook that they'll wait 24 hours before taking about patches, so.. at least we know they're thinking of it. I really wouldn't mind seeing the more "casual" and more "competitive" ideals being put into different modes, similiar to how SPFIITHDR re-balanced the game in one mode, but gave the original, classic rules in another...

I was really looking forward to this but I can't even play it. The audio is excruciatingly loud and distorted no matter what I do. I tested several other games and programs, rebooted, etc. and it's just Magical Drop V, so it must be some kind of bug. Even with the mixer volume and the device volume below 25 and the in game volume on like 10%, it's loud as fuck. This makes no sense. It's unplayable for me. :(

Tested on another PC with a Xonar DG and the exact same issue. I haven't seen any reports of this one yet. Anyone else having a similar problem?

Yeah, this. What does this line mean?

Having to constantly click the Xbox 360 joystick left and right feels awkward after a while, since your character doesn’t smoothly move when you hold in a direction.

Does the character stutter step when you hold a direction? Shouldn't something like this be played with a digital pad or joystick? I certainly wouldn't play Super Puzzle Fighter with the analog stick.

Yeah, the character stutter steps when you hold a direction, snapping to each line of the field. And yeah, this is definitely not an analog stick game.

Magical Drop 3 is the game that convinced me that the Saturn controller has the best dpad ever. I wouldn't wish the 360 pad on anyone in this case.

The discussions on Steam mentioned that turning off surround sound on your primary playback sound card and switching it to stereo resolves the issue. Mine's outputting in stereo without any issues.

Something similar happened to me as well; I tried to swap the keyboard inputs for Player 1 and Player 2, because the default mapping for Player 1 is awkward as hell, and the game wouldn't respond to Esc either. And the game doesn't even let you remap the keys for the keyboards. It's pretty frustrating.

I saw the rep for Golgoth Studio playing MDV on and off for about 3 hours before the game hit Steam, so I had assumed that they were working on some last minute fixes on the game itself, in addition to fixing whatever hangups they had with Steam. I'm a little disappointed with the state that the game is in now, and I hope that the devs make some fixes soon.

This game is literally unplayable, how they let it released is far beyond me. I love the series, but I demand a refund or a fix soon.

My game runs at like 25% speed it should be.

Worst game I've ever bought.

I guess I'll just copy what I posted in the Steam group here in case something happens to it. I also posted about not being able to grab falling gems and players starting with different playfields, because those are both gross omissions if true.

I've run into several problems so far, some of which I posted to Facebook, but in the interest of completeness I'll repeat here:

* The sound outputted at crazy high volume when I had more than two speakers enabled. Dialing it back down to stereo fixed it.
* Game won't respond to "Esc" at all, no matter what I do. Not sure if it's because I'm in Japanese locale or if the game is only coded for French keyboards or something. If the first menu I navigated into is not the control settings to change to Xbox controller, I would have had no choice but Alt+F4 to get out.
* Online play lobby matching is very strange; I selected Quick Match on King Of The Hill mode and ended up being the apparent master of a Head To Head match. Once this match started I found I was unable to select the "Change Character" option (it would treat it as if I had selected rematch), though the opponent did once.
* Very frequently a strange effect will occur where you will see the opponent receive an attack that fills their screen to 2-3 times their playfield, yet they will still be in play. It appears communication is not occurring between clients properly? Also, against one particular opponent the game freezes to the point I cannot even bring up the Steam overlay or Alt+Tab, and must use Ctrl+Alt+Del to end the game process and get back to my desktop.

This is besides agreeing with others that the controls aren't responsive enough and need to be tightened greatly.
