Magical PSP Goodness: Loco Roco

Y2Kev

TLG Fan Caretaker Est. 2009
So I finally downloaded the demo after upgrading my firmware to 2.7.

Is this the best PSP experience yet? Excellent music, tight control, catchy gameplay that I can pick up and go with in short bursts, and absolutely gorgeous style? I can't really understand any of the menus or anything, but I figured that you just jumped with the shoulder buttons and you can jolt yourself with circle. And that's it.

Is that it? This game is so simple and yet it is so wonderful. When does this come out?

This is the first time I've picked up a PSP and had a smile on my face while playing it.

It just takes Katamari's charm and propels it into the stratosphere. The expressions on the blob's face are hilarious.

LocoRoco = instant smile on face, (unless you are a cold heartless bastard / devout n-bot)

I smiled the first time I played it at TGS, instantly. The game is just...pure happy.

I always saw the title and assumed Transport Tycoon PSP.

Im probably wrong.

P.S Mad ruling avatar, Dynamite Headdy owned.

It really is an incredible game.

IGN has it scheduled for September, but i read it was coming out in the summer.... i guess September is close enough.

I'm still waiting for the rumored online modes to be announced.

I was playing the demo and the camera zooms in and the blob splits into 40 little blobs and I started cracking up.

The music is hysterical and I'm pretty sure the words "Derek Jeter" appear somewhere in the lyrics.

Loco Roco is super fun!

(if they made a Loco Roco PS3 it'd be kind of interesting because of the motion controlling)

Yeah, I was going to say that. I think it possible.

OMG YES. That is PERFECT.

Do it! Do it! SONY ARE YOU LISTENING?

it'll probably depend on how well the PSP version does.

but even then, it probably wouldn't be that expensive to make since the art style being used can't really be improved all that much more. but who knows, any game can cost a fortune to make

It could be a 1080p super-sharp, amazingly beautiful game with motion control. It'd be perfect.

i'd imagine that'd be a game where you would actually have to move that exaggeratingly :lol

And you could gesture "UP!" with the controller to get the blob to jump.

I love it. I hope some linux dude does it if Sony doesn't. Sony better.....*squinty eyes*...or I will kill them.

It's been in my top most anticipated PSP games since Sony revealed it (I believe at TGS) and although my PSP list has shrunk since then this game is still on it. Right now it's my on most anticipated PSP games list with MGS and UGnG. :D I am still so surprised this is coming from Sony though, but I do believe that creator when he said it was hard to get the proposal across.

I'm in the minority here--I think most GAFfers love them some Loco Roco--but I'm waiting to see the final game before declaring it the Greatest. Fucking. Game. Ever.

Yes, it's cute. Yes, the art direction is fantastic. Yes, the song is catchy. Yes, those little singing blobs warm even my dark heart. But will it get any deeper? Will it feel repetitive? Will the soundtrack eventually drive you to stab someone with a spoon? Let's wait and see...

It's just a simple, fun puzzle game. I don't think it's supposed to be too deep. It is applying a simple mechanic over and over.

And the music may make you want to stab something. :D Depends if you like, as Drinky says, Wacky Jappy.

In the UK, the Official PSP Guidebook magazine finally came out. It comes with a UMD with playable demos, including one for LocoRoco. Interestingly, it is a different level than the Japanese demo and completely in English. However, the only "preview" I found talking about it (@gamefaqs, no less) said it was horribly inferior the Japanese one, since it lacked some sounds and did not have as catchy a song.

Really, my friend got it and said it was a different level but still as fun - but have a different tune to the level.

Hey, it's GFaqs - sometimes I get a feeling that if it's not in Japanese, it's insta-suckage for some people there.

Now where can I get that demo disc!?

Now that's just plain weird. Why such a large gap for the US release??

I've been waiting for this game since I saw the very first shots and videos of it months ago. I still haven't bit the bullet yet and upgraded my PSP's Firmware yet, but I think I will soon.

Aaaand..

Scratch that. Firmware upgraded. Demo downloaded. Playing now.

First thing.. I love the singing. And when it splits into pieces, the pieces sing as a chorus. THAT is so cool.

I do hope Loco Roco is the next Katamari. Maybe we'll get a trilogy out of this one before another really weird series comes along.

What the hell is going on? Europe before anyone else?! This better not be a new trend or somebody gonna get stabbed in the underbelly. In related news, I'm hoping for downloadable levels.

European site is up! It's pretty great too, you navigate the site the same way you play the actual game :) Not nearly as polished or precise, not really fully physics based eiter (lots of poorly caned animations), but it gets the point across.

Fixed.

And yes, Loco Roco deserves all the praise it gets.
Killer app

Just downloaded 2.7 and the demo, great game. Bad news is that it allowed me to figure out that my circle button is f'ed up, now I gotta figure out how to fix it:(

They had better not screw it up by changing the US release so much it doesn't have the same Japanese charm. I'll import the Japanese one if I have to. Just don't screw it up! Give everyone the same game! Please! The ONLY difference I want to see is English text. I want the same music. The same levels. The same singing. The same graphics. The same mouth synchronization. The same!

Please?

Damn I was hoping for a updated demo in English.

Considering the otherwise inexplicable gap in release dates, I can't help but feel that you'll be dissapointed.

Your button could be fine. Circle button in loco roco demo is not supposed to split you apart immediately. You have to press and hold it for a sec to cause an earthquake, then you release and press it again quickly to break LocoRoco apart.

No I know it is broken. About a month ago I found my psp on the ground with teeth marks in it (damn basset hound). The button is loose but the only games I have are lumines and Riiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer, so I never tried it out. Looks like I am going to have to buy a new front and circle button and replace it myself, cause Sony won't do anything to help (I even offered to pay :D )

I know it is a little OT but anyone care to point me in the right direction for the tools needed?

I downloaded the demo, moved it onto my PSP's memory stick, loaded the game up and..."The game could not be started."

Anyone else? Anyone have a fix?

PSP/GAME/UCJS10041

U need to put the eboot inside a folder named UCJS10041

I fucking -love- how they all sing different parts, that cracked me up. :lol
They really need a tilt sensor though, the left and right sides of my brain are fighting when I tilt the controller one way only to have it do nothing :(

Great though, great is a katamari sort of way which can only lead to great things.
