I am going to try and not make this an anti Wii topic.

The conversation is about, the idea, that inviting everyone else into our hobby does not necessarily benefit us. "Wow, now my grandmother no longer makes fun of me for playing Doom, because she is rocken the Wiimote."

All you have to do is look at things like MTV. Music is great, music is awesome, everyone agrees with that. MTV really fucking sucks though, and it is the biggest driving factor in the music industry today. That is what happens when you give your hobby to mainstream commercialism.

It is not important that they get us. I can share my experience with my mom. Trust me, I can find a lot of other shit to share with my family without stupifying my own hobby.

Just look at television, is it better with Full House or without it? Are we going to support Full House for the sake of keeping the dumbest humans alive entertained just for the sake of getting them on board with primetime television?

That is videogaming in ten years if you guys do not ball up. It is going to be a Cliffy B reality show, and an Oprah special on the Wii, and a film version of Animal Crossing.

Personally I do not give a shit if the rest of the world gets us. Video games are fun, let the rest of the world flow our way instead of us convincing them to do so.

For some reason, this scenario reminds me of the exec in Tom Hanks' BIG trying to explain to the kid that the robot transforms into a stationary, nondescript building.

Gaming is mainstream, that's why 110 million PS2s were sold. Games are no worse in quality now than they ever were

It actually is. It has been since the SNES days. Do we need our parents now to justify our hobby? Do we need to convince them that it is ok? That is the arguement I was making.

You have a Pearl Jam avatar, and you're complaining about dumb mainstream crap?

If you want the assault of the GTA is murder brigadeto stop, yes.

Oh God.

Sigh. I wonder if you really believe that all those people that bought PS2s, GBAs and DSs are more like 'us' than 'them.'

Gaming doesn't need justification...

This is a "Casual games are not good, I HATTTTTEEEE ME SOME WII" topic, nothing to do with how mainstream the medium is.

It took the OP this long to figure it out on his or her own? I'm assuming he comes to us from an alternate universe of pure equality where there are only choices of equivalnt popularity.

It's amazing how reactionary bullshit dressed with a window dressing of factual observations can be rewritten as concerned industry analysis. The keyboard truly is mightier than cow dung.

gaming is already aimed squarely at the mtv crowd. gta, tony hawk, licensed movie games such as spider-man, etc. mainstream commercialism, indeed. at least in terms of what the target market is.

one thing i hope that happens with wii, honestly, is that it leads a shift to something other than the mtv crowd (but certainly not to their exclusion). if nintendo successfully courts the oprah sect, i'd consider that an expansion in the right direction.

I wonder what your thoughts on the playstation would be then? Lets be honest games were still fairly small coming from the 16bit generation and the audience was nothing like the last 2 generations why complain now when it started what is now an effect of a lack of standards. I agree with your point but nintendo didn't start this snowball put it on the lap of the company that started it.

Uh. Right.

Ignoring the fact that gaming has been mainstream since the PS1.

The argument is that we should promote games being good over games being commercial. Not even just commercial, but being aimed at people outside of traditional gamers to sell copies. That is very straight to video, and very the Mummy Returns. and..... fuck it... :) Cats for everyone

I don't care if it's mainstream... or obscure. I don't care about expanding the market or any of the crap. I just care about games I want to play.

What I see is this:
The two consoles that currently have the games I want to play and will want to play in the future are being beaten severely by a console that has literally nothing appealing to me now or in the future.
That worries me a little bit.

Ignorant and small minded.

More people playing games means more creative talent making games, and less people taking wankers like Jack Thompson seriously.

You have a point, the success of Full House has led to every show being exactly like Full House. Television hasn't advanced a bit!

With everything else in life you ignore the crap and concentrate on the good. It works for movies, books, music, and it sure works for gaming and always has since inception of the medium.

I really hate how Full House prevented the creation of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, and The Wire. :(

And god, can you imagine a world in which Full House was never made? We might even see cool stuff like some cable network agreeing to fork over a full season of television to each of George Martin's novels! It makes me weep.

Firefly was canceled! I think you're being a little naive if you don't think Bob Sagat was behind that.

Yes, it is rather troubling that the PS2 is vastly outselling the PS3 and 360!

That's the thing... it's an expansion. It's not the destruction of all other types of games. Just like the film industry, there needs to be the indie hits, the R-rated super awesome sci-fi action flicks, and then the family friendly schlock. The gaming industry NEEDS all of this, not just some of it, and not just for "us". If you want the medium to survive, or more to the point if you want your favorite game types to keep getting made, be happy for these casual games. They're cheap to make, and they'll fund those big games you're so fond of playing.

You missed my point you stupid ****with an ugly avatar.

The point about Full House, is that dumb successful shows propel years of other dumb shows. You stupid **** with an ugly avatar.

Those 4 stars stand for love and not the other word which would seem much more obvious.

Most of the 'big blockbusters' that are not coming out on the the systems that is not Wii, which I know you're not targeting, are no better intellectually and thematically than the Mummy Returns and most have throngs of fans and will be commercially successful. Heck, we have people here making up make-believe classifications such as the 'big five' based entirely on a list of first party release schedule fed to them by corporate PR.

If you want to talk about 'good' games versus 'bad' commercial games, make a thread about that.

Just because something is mainstream doesnt mean it has to suck. The overall quality may go down as a whole, but with a larger audience and even more cash shoved into the industry, that will also lead to more great games. Sure there will be more crap, the the shear volume alone will also mean that there will be more to choose from :)
Sorta like Victims in UT3 If PS3 players step into the PC realm :P

What? How can nothing not apeal to you? You have everything from a grand adventure game, to platforming at its finest. Fighting, and shooting, excite trucking to mini-gaming.

Some of you people are reaching so hard, youve jarred something in your brains.

You'd have to be a total lame-o to not realize that the market that bought HL2, Halo 2, GTA isn't going to suddenly dissappear when Wii Fit comes out. The demand will still be there. Calm down, step off the ledge. Everything's going to to be just fine.

Isn't there a Penny Arcade comic on this?

Seriously, the "hardcore" went through this phase ten years ago when Sony took over. It's the same stupid argument.

This thread has the potential to be extremely entertaining now.

Mainstream is just a cliche for people who no longer feel special because other people like what they like.

.

Then it is still a bad point.

Full House did not stop good TV from being made. It did not even endanger good TV. And I'm sure there was bad TV before Full House. (er...not that it's bad, for you FH lovers. :lol )
