Major Nelson: Both PS4/Xbox One will "sell a ton", online hate "needs to go away"

PR gunna PR, It's easy for Nelson to say this in a PR interview, but it seems from yesterdays Greenberg tweets they want the onine vs. mode but only if they're winning.

It was a set of comments on Reddit /r/xboxone not even an interview.

Yeah, no kidding.

People argue pettily about sales data that ends up not being all that significant in the end. You can't even say the "better sales = more exclusives" thing anymore...it's just arguing for the sake of arguing by people who just need to win something, anything. But this has always been obvious to non-sales age people

Well....we are gamers by nature. You play games to win. So its not hard to understand why some gamers look at console wars as a game in and of itself, and there must be a winner and there must be a loser.

I agree both will sell a ton but don't agree about the hate. All the hate X1 got and still does is valid. And hate to be this be this guy but he's full of shit.

If PS4 tanked we would be seeing a completely different Major. Just look at 05-06 Major. Shitting on PS3 across the board.

I think the gaming community was effective in making change and this scares companies and even the gaming journalism community feels threatened. I wouldn't doubt they are confused and lump everything in under the umbrella term of hate.

Yeah, their idea of hate is basically people not putting up with whatever is handed to them.

Can someone explain to me what he means by online hate?

Edit: I know what online hate could mean but I'm talking about online hate relative to these consoles.

That's a great point. I would like for Major Nelson to be more specific.

Thats my read too. The online sphere flipped out for very real reasons.

I think it'd be more helpful to suggest online warriors put their swords down and judge these systems by their games and user experience now and just, ya know, have fun.

80% of people who want a PS4/XBone, bought one already. It's gonna slow down- a lot. Especially if they can't bring the games. -cough-watch dogs-cough- ... If a major game such as Destiny fails, it's gonna hurt these companies. People are realizing that at least at the moment there's no reason to own a console that doesn't have any games.

I think 2014 is going to be a hard year for all console manufacturers.

I agree however you cannot say that the hate MS initially received was not warranted. Hell, if it wasn't for the hate, MS would most definitely not have reversed their policies and could have been in deep shit right about now.

between the PS4/XB1 systems there is a 8 million spread

currently the 360/PS3 spread is over 160 million

Pretty sure there is still a large market of people wanting one :P

Initially of course, now because Sony charges for online now this will be the new favorite post derail tactic

Yes like when their head of marketing said data collected with kinect could be a gold mine of course people will flip out

Now MS, why wouldn't you get hate for your previous shit policies? Sure you took them back, but people aren't obliged to forgive you nor should they forget. Combined with a steady commentary coming from your higher ups about the previously rejected policies being things that you still want to do, why wouldn't you get hate?

Saying that they took the policies back and that the two consoles are now even and should be judged strictly on games and services is redundant. Which company with what past policies is backing the console is just as important because then you know what to expect, what to look out for, and what are the risks of supporting a platform.

You're not taking into account casuals who don't give a shit about consoles anymore. When last gen started smartphones/TVs didn't exist. Now smartphones are as powerful as last gen, and soon will offer the same level of functionality. People aren't going to buy a console if they can watch Netflix on their TV now. They aren't going to buy a console if their phone can do everything a 360 could do. Nintendo also saw a promising first few months for the Wii U, followed by a radical drop off. The same will happen with the PS4 and Xbox, mark my words.

The truth is, real gamers will invest that $500 into a PC instead, knowing they'll get a better experience. Casuals won't bother investing at all. (Or they'll continue to buy last gen consoles.)

I gave Penello the benefit of the doubt many, many times. You can look up my posts telling others that as long as Penello is sharing his points respectfully, they should attack the points, not Penello.

I always knew that it was part of his job to paint XBO in a positive light. I don't begrudge him that. But to come here, spread deliberate misinformation, then leave the second the system launches... I really don't have any excuses left for Penello.

Truth.

I still think we should be kind to people on here, but he blatantly spread inaccurate information and I will (respectfully) not trust anything he says.

Was half joking, I definitely think the potential market has contracted due to tablets ect.

but the 160 million was just PS3/360 users. filewalled at work but pretty sure the Wii iteself was 100 million plus

Yeah, the fact that both are selling well is great for the industry. It has been a little bit scary watching the WiiU flop and a lot of people writing up stories about how tablets & F2P gaming has killed the core console biz.

Director of Global Marketing at Microsoft, Craig Davidson seemed pretty confident about the Xbox One in an interview with IGN Spain where according to him the “Xbox One will surprise the world during E3.” following up with “We will kill Sony at E3″.

Please don't hate y'all. Competition is awesome and so healthy. For the industry!

Not to be a chicken little, but these new consoles come off the back of the longest generation in history and during the holidays.

I'm hopeful, but let's see how the industry looks in a couple months before making a "final answer".

The hate was clearly warranted for MS, And it would be funny or amusing to see had they stuck too there original policies how many Xbone's would have sold...But they reversed their anti-consumer crap so all in all us gamers win.

I'd rather hear MS and Major nelson's opinion on how they feel being second behind Sony, As Major shit on Sony over the ps3 few years ago i think.

And im one of the people who switched from 360 too ps4......as people like me who did that could quite easily have made it 4.2 million xbox's sold.

Too late nelson. I will hate on you hoes cause your not the best.

Got 100 people to not get the XBoneR simoly by word of mouth. Suck it and i hope you like the mass exodus of gamers you tried to bone.

Soon? I think it will be a very long time, before any smartphone reaches the same level of functionality, as a dedicated console, about 20 times its size. You can get pretty graphics on phones now, but the same level of functionality? That is just a pipe dream when the words 'soon' are added to it. A phone will never have parity with these systems on controls, power usage, or software support, because the markets are completely different.

And saying 'real gamers' just buy a PC, is some funny, elitist shite. I own a PC, and was a 'real gamer' long before that occurred. That sentiment is almost childish.

Sticking one's hand on a hot burner and then complaining about the heat seems somewhat disingenuous. Legitimate criticism - and there was a lot to criticize - does not equal "hate".

I rarely agree with Amir0x's long-winded retorts, but I'm in complete agreement with this succinct response. Crazy...

Hmmm… Fair enough. Penello, if you are still reading, know that you still have one person that hasn't completely lost faith in you. I've criticized a lot of your responses, but I'd still like to think that you didn't just use us and toss us aside. May be I'm just being naive, but fuck it. I'm a member of NeoGaf. Believe. :)

You gotta remember its only legit criticism if its against your competition. If its against you, then its haters who continually persist on hating for hates sake.

I agree with the content of what he's saying. Both will sell a ton and the industry is looking healthy. But this has a distinctively more defeated tone than the previous PR he was spewing. Hopefully this marks a new direction in xbox PR and the end of all that nonsense of trying to convince people that there is no power gap, "balance," infinite power of the cloud, etc. etc.

Major Nelson's statement reeks of smarm.

Bingo.

"Smarm is a kind of performance—an assumption of the forms of seriousness, of virtue, of constructiveness, without the substance. Smarm is concerned with appropriateness and with tone. Smarm disapproves.

Smarm would rather talk about anything other than smarm. Why, smarm asks, can't everyone just be nicer?"

Couldn't agree more. This new generation is off to a great start and we should be celebrating that by playing games and not arguing about XYZ.

Yeah, context is required.

Trying to screw console gamers over deserved all the bile and wrath the online community could throw.

The backtracking and admitting their faults were commendable (if not profit driven perhaps) and to be fair I think most people gave them their well dones but some were burned by it. The rest of the comments to me have been mostly poking, ribbing and general banter. Don't really see the hate he mentions. In fact most are really happy that both consoles are doing so well, gamings future is very bright with these sales. Considering all the doom and gloom from finance guys it has shown how strong the gaming community is.

I guess people don't appreciate the PR speak or spin these days, so don't bring it to real community's as you will get a real response. It works in meetings and presentations, not in a 'sit down' environment. Again though, they get shot down in a factual way and I don't think any hate is involved... maybe annoyance.

Its not even that hard. You lead your friends to game with you and it goes from there. Just show them dat 4 toss in some remember all them red ring You got? Instant reminder and boned for life. Keep on trucking. Plus it looks stupid. Never undeunderestimate peoples superficiality when it comes to how shit looks. Told them the XBoneR looks toebaggin or a hot mess design wise. Thing is mega fat.

Someone is drunk or high, or maybe both. Damn!

The iPhone 5S and other modern smartphones already match the 360 graphically. All it needs is better controller, battery and third party support to completely match last gen. Everyone has a smartphone. Why buy a console when everyone can just bring their phone over as a personal controller?

You may have been a real gamer before you owned a PC, but that was before consoles became exclusively little gimped PCs. The One and PS4 run incredibly similar hardware, which is itself incredibly similar to a low end PC, meaning porting games to PC from consoles has never been easier. Devs have been developing in 1080 for years now, don't you think they believe it's time for a change of pace? Would you want to continue developing a game that is 50% as good as it should be?

Maybe it would be elitist if a PC matching the power of a PS4 wasn't so similar in price to a PS4, or if exclusives to these consoles actually warranted a $400 purchase. Maybe these things will change by the end of the year ( highly doubt it. ) but until that point gamers who want to experience the best of what these games have to offer would be foolish not to at least consider a PC.

There was shit being thrown from both sides back in those days.
