Major Nelson denies eSRAM Issues with Xbone, CBOAT: "nope"

It's not on 40nm, wired got it wrong. That APU on 40nm would be fucking massive and toasty enough to do your bacon.

and yet that is what microsoft told extremetech and wired.
Microsoft says the SoC is based on a 40nm process.-link

Of course they backpedaled later,
(Updated: The latest information seems to be that Microsoft got it wrong, and that it is in fact a 28nm SoC, just like Kabini.)-link
but where did they get the original 40nm from? might that be the truth and 28nm be disinformation?

Think about the extremely large size of the box, the giant fan, the fact the power supply is external, the fact it seems they're having issues manufacturing it. How could there be this many issues, seemingly related to heating, with a low power apu?

IF it is 40nm it all makes sense.

Major Nelson is probably crying in his basement after seeing that CBoaT post.

Seriously though, I would be surprised if Major Nelson knows shit all about the eSRAM yields, he's an Xbox Live guy for god's sake.

The Cboat guys reliable, but considering Microsofts hardon for outright refusing to acknowledge the existence of rumors, them commenting on it seems significant. It could certainly mean that they're trying to cover it up, but it could also be them trying to get out in front of a rumor for once.

They're counting on reactions like this.

So Microsoft may be having to turn down the clocks on their GPU.

That sucks for all of you new Xbox One owners! All of us early adopters who already bought Xbox Ones and have been playing the last few months get non-downclocked GPUs and faster frame rates.

Oh wait, that makes no sense because it's not even out and not one person in this thread has "lost" anything.

Anyway, how is this balancing act of weighing clock rates and chip yields any different than what so many other SOC and other chip manufacturers (Intel and AMD included, so that means PS4) already do with pretty much every major device on the market today? I mean, if it turns out that XB1 is certifiably significantly slower than PS4, then it's clear they aimed too high with their design and crashed and burned a bit, but we won't *know* anything like that until we can compare live gameplay footage, preferably the same running on both. At this point, we have no idea whether Sony's actually already gone through this process themselves one or more times already - or whether they've yet to go through it still. But they almost certainly will have to at some point during the PS4's development. Smartphone and tablet manufacturers do it, too!
Sucks for the people who have been developing games, and currently are doing so, with the Xbone devkits they currently have, and might need to redo and retest a bunch of shit this close to launch if they DO get downclocked, of course.

After months of refusing to acknowledge the existence of rumors and weeks of "no comment" and "tba," an actual hard line answer just seems odd.
The tricky thing with a rumor like this is, without hard confirmed specs, no matter what changes behind the scenes the official word can still be "no changes were made" and still be true. I mean "downclocked from what number?", the Major will protest.

Turn off this shader, reduce these other effects. They're already doing this constantly as they keep up frame rates in all areas of their games. It's also sometimes a part of final QA, even.

Does it create more work for developers? Yes. Is it a significant amount more uncertainty and guesswork than launching a new game in the first, say, month window of any other brand new console, or even the XB1 had it not gotten these late changes? Not terribly, no.

It's Major Nelson, and he does usually ignore tweets like this, but I'm not sure what triggered him to bother with this one. But I get the impression he's not actually a big fan of Microsoft's hard line "we don't respond to rumors ever, that's like negotiating with the terrorists" thing.

Wow so now we are going to believe the rumor of someone who is hidden behind an anonymous handle rather than a public statement by Microsoft representative, whose identity is completely known to everyone, who knows he will be lambasted if his statement is found out to be false?

Under the majority of the opinions here, we should never ever believe another official statement by any console maker representative because they are all paid shills of said company.

Ridiculous, I'm going to believe Major Nelson on this until there is proof that he is wrong.

Would love to live in your world, man. So optimistic.

Just stop for a second and think what would happen if MN actually admitted publicly that the XB1 was having production issues. Do you really think he would do that to some random question on twitter. Come on. Come on. Use that brain.

Edit: Hell, just look at how long it took for them to acknowledge the RRoD issue.

Of course they'll cover it up. Ultimately I'd feel bad for the early adopters, if MS fixes this later on.

I'm sorry, but whenever I read CBOAT I think it's a rapper's name. CBOAT should go undercover as Usher and perform at the Microsoft E3 Conference, singing and dancing about the eSRAM issues lol.

English is an interesting language--it's very easy to spin half-truths in a way that makes the company you're trying to defend come off in the best possible light.

In this case, Major Nelson is using a very typical PR move called a "non-denial denial." Look it up some time.

IF it is 40nm it all makes sense.

If it was 40nm it would not be able to be based on Jaguar or GCN since they were never manufactured at 40nm.

There is absolute zero chance it is or ever was a 40nm chip. There's simply no logic to that claim.

I'm with cboat.
Anyone with enough dedication to type with his teeth says the truth in my book.

#teamtypos

Seriously, why would he lie.

The 40nm rumor stems from esram not currently being available at 28nm, right?

I don't think we'll get real tech specs until retail teardowns.

I'm personally having a coin-flip reaction to this.

On one hand, MN and Microsoft in general tend to not comment on rumors/problems until way later, so the nearly immediate response to this leaves me slightly optimistic.

But

I have yet to see cboat lead anyone astray, and with how ham-fistedly Microsoft has been handling everything else I feel it may be silly to doubt him.

Guess we'll have to wait until E3 (at the earliest) to know anything definitively.

MN even implied in his statement "I cannot comment every unsourced rumor bla bla bla"

Which simply means "I didn't even read it".

Why should he even bother browsing through Gaf ?

In cboat we trust !

To anyone who thinks Major Nelson knows his hardware and wouldn't lie : http://majornelson.com/2005/05/20/xbox-360-vs-ps3-part-1-of-4/

He's a PR shill, nothing more.

Fair enough

My coin has flipped, and I think it landed on "truthfact"

I'm sorry but I am going to trust a Microsoft employee who flat out denies it over a random GAF user who claims to have inside knowledge, denied!

Major nelson also claimed constant shipments back when the 360 was released, my ass it was. Didnt get one until end of December and i was checking daily. This dude is PR.

Yeah, PR people are so much more trustworthy than a user with a track record that goes years back.

Dude most of your posts here are defending MS. Not calling you an astroturfer, but maybe you should take some emotional distance and look at c-boat's record impartially. C boats is an insider

You will trust a Public Rapist professional?
Whoops , I meant a public relations professional.

Granted, they don't always lie, but who would own up to a manufacturing problem?
The business doesn't afford anyone to be honest and scuffle sales.

What is the deal will CBoaT? His text is barely legible, yet what he says is held in high regard. Is he some sort of insider?

At this point anyone who buys a Xbone should be content if it plays games without a semen sample provided.

Kinect's got that covered, IR'ing them scrotums and ovaries making all the childrens sterile. Also analyze your breath for alcoholic content!!

The fact is Microsoft never outright denies anything unless it isn't true, they always give the we do not comment on rumors or speculations. For even someone like Nelson to come out and personally refuse it, is rare.

I believe they are having issues but in reality how likely is it that this will come out? I could see a few years down the road but other than that they will probably stick to denying it.

Team CBOAT has quite a bit riding on this... Just how long would it take for this whole ESRAM issue to become public knowledge? IE are we looking for ultra low shipped numbers this Holiday Season or do we need a tear down or what?

#TeamCBOAT

it is what it is. I just hope it doesn't have too much effect on nextgen games visual quality.

You aren't going to go far until you learn to read the thread before posting.

This has been answered many times.

So many people doubting CBOAT smh. We should have a sticky thread for all the new members to educate them about the CBOAT.

We should have a thread about reading threads to educated them on how to read threads. It would be meta as hell.
