Major Nelson on X360 NY Press day

No, I think devs can skin the blades for their game. DOA was probably being played.

That's just a guess though.

If you connect the X360 to your LAN and run Windows Media Connect on your PCs, you can set any image from one of your PCs to be the background image for the dashboard.

Xbox 360 looks really good next to the iPod.

Can you just do the same thing with MP3 and Custom Soundtracks?

This picture makes me want to play Kameo again. I so can't believe I'm anticipating this game that much !
Haha, It's funny. Whenever I read something you say, in my mind it plays like you are actually saying it in that funny French accent of yours! Haha!

"Mirique! 'ow ar' yuu?" :lol

What's the deal with the ipod connection and the 360?

You can't stream from your ipod while playing a game, can you? That would be too amazing.

i dont have an ipod but i'll be doing that with my PSP :)

So you're saying I can play PGR3 with my own customized soundtrack via streaming ipod tunes?

That's fucking INSANE.

Yes. From any type of USB compatible media device. You could also stream music from your PC if connected to the network. All, during, or outside of games.

Have you been living in a cave? :D

Every single game now supports custom soundtracks off of your mp3 player or from a networked computer, hard drive or DVD/CD or USB thumb drive. Every single game and application on Xbox 360 also supports voice chat. So basically Xbox 360 is like a computer that constantly has Skype and Winamp running in the background. Just like on a computer you could use voice chat while you're watching a dvd movie or watching live tv you can do it on Xbox 360. Oh and voice chat is completely free now, no subscription needed.

As a matter of fact, yeah, I HAVE been living in a cave, thank you very much.

Seriously, though, I thought that this was the case, but then I told some friends, and they couldn't believe it. And then the more I thought about it, I figured you could only stream from the ipod on menu screens or xbox live screens or whatever, not during actual gameplay.

Whatever. Thanks for the info, everyone.

See, this is one of the cool little touches in the 360 that SOMEONE (hint, hint, Microsoft) should be detailing by now. I guess MS is gonna wait until a week or two before launch. Here's a question: can I stream music off a USB hard drive? I imagine so, as the 360 probably would see it as just another read-only storage device. I've got a couple of little 20GB laptop drives in external enclosures that I'd love to load up with a ton of MP3s and use; that way I don't have to worry about turning on my PC or anything, and the drives aren't any bigger than an Ipod.

New York Media Event: Day 2

Posted: October 12, 2005 @ 2:34 am (1 hour, 9 minutes ago) By: Major Nelson

Tuesday was the final day of our Xbox 360 Preview Event here in New York. I don’t know the exact number, but we showed the Xbox 360 to a LOT of media, journalists and bloggers. Today’s agenda had a lot of game bloggers, and some influential community members in attendance. We had top community contributors from the IGN, Xbox 365, Gamingage, Xbox Addict, Gamespot and the 1up forums and message boards. As a bonus, one of the top posters at the Playstation.com boards was invited. That’s right…one of the guys from deep inside the Playstation forums joined us. He came. he saw. He was amazed. He actually told me ‘I was going to buy one anyway…but I am even more excited now.’ That was pretty much the feeling from everyone I spoke with. Each person had their favorite game, but generally speaking everyone walked away with good things to say. I met Justin from www.360hacker.net/. Even though Justin is a student, and in the throws of mid-terms, he took the day off and got himself to NYC to play the games. I spoke with him a few times, but he (and everyone else) did not come to chat with me…they came to play some games. So I stayed out of everyone’s way, and let them play as much as they wanted to. In the evening we had a cocktail party hosted by Peter Moore and Shane Kim where everyone from the past two days was invited back for food, drinks and to continue playing the games.

Peter Rojas and Ryan Block from Engadget dropped by today. Peter was here yesterday, but it was great to meet Ryan and show him the Xbox 360 and some of the games. In addition, some of the PMS Clan was able to drop by and the ladies properly dug right in and kicked some gaming ass. I am not sure how I managed to do it, but I completely missed meeting the Gizmodo guys. It was that crazy.

So where are the GAF impressions? Here are some from some dude over at IGN:

Game of Event:

Drumroll please. My personal favorite (and I fully expected this) was Kameo. All I have to say is Breathtakingly gorgeous. Undeniably next gen. If you saw the X05 video, I actually got to sit down and play with the guy who was behind the controller of the video. He’s a super cool guy, and showed me tons of gorgeous areas in the game. The controls are fast, fluid and responsive, and did I mention gorgeous? I walked right up to walls and the detail holds out. The brick work is amazing, cloth physics are sick, flying over grass and watching the grass react to the wind from my wings… WOW. Did you guys know that it has a co-op mode? Yep! Split screen coop! Water unlike water I’ve ever seen in any game to date. Definitely worthy a purchase in my opinion.

Surprise of Event:

Xbox Live Arcade. Guys, they redid arcade, and OMG. It is going to rock the world. I am serious. They’ve got tons of indy developers submitting games to be released on arcade, and these titles are actually good! We’re talking old school gaming, with new school graphics. I played some of these for HOURS. And NOW it will actually catch on. Anyone with an internet connection can download trial versions of the games, and then purchase with credit card, or with a gamercard that is purchased from a store. Games will be cheaper than they are currently, and apparently they’ve got a section dedicated to emulated coin-op arcade games. Several of the big arcade machine companies have started submitting titles to be released. I honestly, and I really mean this, don’t know how Nintendo’s online plan can compete. Nintendo will be re-releasing their old titles for play, but Xbox live arcade will have old emulated titles AND new titles being released all the time. You wanted innovation? It’s here guys. Here is where people will get to experiment with new ideas, with new gameplay, and submit their work to MS, and have it published through XBL Arcade. Microsoft did it right this time. In addition to anyone being able to purchase and play XBL arcade titles, you can bring the games with you anywhere on a memcard. Yes, you can copy a purchased game onto a memory card and bring it with you and play.

LIVE ARCADE is getting serious $$ from me this go around. Everything is screaming buy me in a cute sexy way.

If nothing else, the Xbox 360 has the best feature set of any console ever.

Especially if some old school arcade classics have Xbox Live multiplayer with voice. :D

They'll have voice since that's built into the machine and supercedes any games, don't know about online multiplayer. And yes, I knew XBA could be a major killer app, it first hit me about a month ago and the idea is really starting to spread now. Just think, on day one, without spending any money on any games, you'll have a ton of trial content to play for free.

I wonder how many 360 owners will subscribe to Live. For XBox it's, what, 10%, right? I imagine for 360 it will be at least double that, easily.

Arcade and Marketplace are totally open for Silver users. I wouldn't be surprised if 50% of 360 users (and probably 75% of the early adopters) at least do the Silver thing.

Sega best hurry up and get working on those model 2 and model 3 emulators. Think of all the possibilities, scud race, daytona 1 and 2, sega rally, virtua fighter 2 and more over Xbox live arcade. Make It happen Sega.

That's pure sex there. Would love some Space Harrier.

some of those games better be online. they dont expect you to play poker and play pool by yourself do they?

I'm still hoping Sega will develop a Genesis emulator as well. I'd love to be able to play Streets of Rage 2 with netplay allowing another person to jump into the game as 2nd player via Live. Speaking of which, it would be awesome if Midway and crew could get working with MK and such; a friend sees you're on, see you're playing MKII or Xenophobe, and "inserts quarter" to come in as player 2.

I'd also love to see Sega port some of their Super Monkey Ball mini games to XBLA as well.

how would one go about making an XBL Arcade game? Would you have to buy a dev kit? How much do those run?

Make a demo on the PC and then contact MS.

Joe - yes, many of the XBLA games will be online.

Any surprises in terms of arcade games come launch?

The whole portfolio hasn't been announced yet. I don't think there are any "megaton" type announcements, but there are some very cool games coming launch day/window.

Kryptonian - just a summon I :)
