A man who decided to offer ‘free hugs’ in Saudi Arabia’s capital Riyadh has been arrested by the state’s religious police.

21-year-old Al-Khayyal announced on Twitter that he was going to offer free hugs in Tahliya, one of the main shopping streets.

However the two men were arrested and their ‘free hugs’ banners seized, CNN Arabic reported.

Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice arrested the two men in Riyadh for violating local laws and engaging in “exotic practices”, Al Hayat newspaper said. They were then made to sign a pledge that they would not go out again.

Despite this, al-Khayyal told The Independent that he would continue to give out free hugs and he was proud of what he had done. He said he considered it an act of charity.

They [religious police] have come under heavy criticism in the past, most notably in March 2002, when they prevented schoolgirls from escaping a burning school in Mecca because they were not wearing headscarves and abayas (black robes) and accompanied by a male guardian. Fifteen girls died and 50 were injured as a result.

Ridiculous, but...

...they prevented schoolgirls from escaping a burning school in Mecca because they were not wearing headscarves and abayas (black robes) and accompanied by a male guardian. Fifteen girls died and 50 were injured as a result.

Holy fuck.

Religious police?! I never knew of this and I lived there for 6 years but that was when I was 9-15 years old.

Makes you want to be an activist or politician and stop that shit.

What and what at that religious police killing schoolgirls. The fuck?!
Are they moonwalking to the past-er past?

what form of evil is this?

Never knew hugs were exotic, but now I'll remind people of that during every hug. It also reminded me of this.

It's actually pretty sad that there's a law against hugging or staying alive, what with that whole burning building biz. Makes a man need a good strong (not exotic) hug.

Most foreigners come into no contact with these people. They live on compounds with pretty much western rules, and when they leave they are shielded by drivers who take them places.

Saudi Arabia is a giant shithole if you're a woman, Jesus Christ.
They're one of our closest allies. We would send our soldiers to die to protect that country if needs be.
Not if the government makes nice with Iran. Then they can go fuck themselves.

People here were rooting for Saudi Arabia as great ally of US against evil Syria.

Until they have oil, they will remain best friends with the white house.

This is unreal. This can't be real life.
