Just went to lunch with someone who was on the plane, as he's interviewing for our company.

Could be rabies as a few others have mentioned. Rabies makes the infected want to bite similar to a zombie since it spreads through spit. It is good to hear the other guy was cleared.

The arrested woman is reported to have been carrying 1.8 Kg of amphetamines. So his death could be related to the same thing.

From the sounds of it, the bite happened after he started having a seizure. It's possible/probable it was involuntary. Certainly in a seizure the victim's mouth can clamp down (often resulting in a self-inflicted injury - a tongue or cheek bite). Perhaps someone was trying to clear his mouth and he bit down.

An Irish woman who was flying with Aer Lingus from Lisbon to Dublin on Sunday afternoon has described how passengers felt panicky and very uneasy after a 24-year-old Brazilian man collapsed and later died on board flight EI 485.

...

“He got up while the cabin crew were at the end of my row giving out tea and coffee,” she told The Irish Times. “He got very distressed when he couldn’t get past and ended up climbing up on the seats to get past the crew. He wasn’t speaking at all and looked really unwell,” she said.

Two male passengers encouraged the man to step down from the seats before he made his way down the aisle to the toilet at the back of the plane, she said. A few minutes later a Portuguese woman sitting across the aisle who “spoke very good English” made her way down the aisle to check on the man in the bathroom.

“She told me later she had spoken to him in the airport,” said the passenger. “She went to check and didn’t come back.”

A short time later the captain made an announcement over the intercom asking if there was a medical professional on board the flight. It is understood a male doctor and female nurse presented themselves to the crew and made their way to the back of the plane.

“Everyone was like, ‘oh that poor young man’. We said ‘God help him, he must be travel sick’. All I was thinking was ‘bless him, walking back up the aisle to his seat from the bathroom feeling mortified’.”

As information began to filter back through the plane it became clear the man had collapsed outside the bathroom, according to the female passenger, who was sitting halfway down the aircraft.

Shortly after, the captain made a second announcement that the flight would be making an emergency landing in Cork Airport due to “a medical emergency”.

“At that stage they started to perform CPR,” she said. “You could hear him start to... well, screaming isn’t quite the word. It was a guttural noise, like a wounded animal.

“That was quite scary, I realised it was much more serious than I’d thought.”

Speaking to Cork’s 96FM on Monday morning, a male passenger described how he saw the Brazilian man “shaking violently” as he suffered what appeared to be a number of seizures.

“The noise he was making was like something that I’d never heard before and wouldn’t like to hear again,” she said, also describing the sounds as “guttural”.

“It was like a deep anguish, that is the best way I can describe it. It was very, very troubled,” he said.

The female passenger told The Irish Times a second Portuguese man, who also spoke English, made his way down the plane to see if he could assist in any way. She said this was the man who was reportedly bitten on board the flight.

“The young Brazilian man was having a seizure and they were all restraining him. It wasn’t a random attack. He bit him during the seizure.”

The flight landed in Cork at about 5.40pm where paramedics boarded from the back of the plane. The man who had been bitten was taken to Cork University Hospital (CUH) where he was treated for his injuries. By this point a curtain had been erected to separate passengers from the young man, says the female passenger.

He was pronounced dead by paramedics soon after their arrival and his body was removed from the airport to CUH.

After a half hour of waiting in their seats, passengers were told the flight would be delayed by a couple of hours before leaving for Dublin. A few minutes later another announcement informed them that buses would be provided to bring them back to Dublin.

“We waited on the plane for two hours but no one minded. Everyone was sitting there saying we can wait. People were just concerned. At that point we had all guessed he was dead,” the female passenger said.

Not really sure what was going on obviously, but I was always told to never try to restrain someone having a seizure. But there was a doctor there so I don't know...

This changes everything.

You mean to tell me that a story I read on the internet wasn't true? I'm shocked.

Haha, well that spreads quickly so it's hard to say. There's family members I've had to educate about it- they thought that actual bath salts (Epsom salt) could cause cannibalism lol

A lot of major medical issues cause behavior that would be seen as crazy. It's disturbing when you see it thru the lens of law enforcement. Many people need a hospital and ignorance causes them to get shot in America.

My condolences go out to the relatives and friends of that person. Dying due to a seizure must have been painful and abrupt.

So, yeah...

Man died on plane after drugs burst in stomach

Gardaí have started an investigation after a postmortem confirmed a 24-year-old Brazilian man died on board an Aer Lingus flight to Dublin when a consignment of drugs burst in his stomach.

A postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster confirmed John Kennedy Santos Gurjao had ingested around 0.8kg of suspected cocaine in 80 wrapped pellets. One of the pellets burst and he became ill on the flight from Lisbon to Dublin on Sunday.

The airbus 320-200 series plane had to be diverted to Cork Airport when Mr Santos Gurjao became ill and agitated. Aer Lingus cabin crew had to restrain him with handcuffs before he started to convulse and he then collapsed into unconsciousness.

Performed CPR
A doctor and two nurses who were travelling on the flight attended Mr Santos Gurjao and performed CPR until the plane landed at Cork Airport. HSE paramedics also attended to him at the airport, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Mr Santos Gurjao appeared to be travelling alone but it is understood other passengers pointed out a woman passenger whom he had been with at Lisbon airport. When gardaí spoke to her and searched her luggage, they found 1.8kg of a white powder.

The 44-year-old woman, who was born in Angola but has a Portuguese passport and lives in Dublin, was arrested under drugs trafficking legislation and taken to Togher Garda Station in Cork for questioning.

The powder was sent to the State laboratory for analysis, where the woman’s claim that it was baking soda was confirmed.

Gardaí were last night continuing to question her about her relationship with Mr Santos Gurjao and if she knew anything about the drugs he was smuggling into Ireland.

I always travel with 1.8kgs of Baking Soda on holiday. I mean who doesn't.....?

Nothing makes sense in this story.
Probably expected them to find this and while they were suspicious of her the mule gets through.

So he overdosed while trying to smuggle cocaine within his body and bit someone trying to help him during the seizure he had due to the overdose.
OK.
So much for Zombees :(

That's what THEY want you to believe. They may have averted disaster this time, the bitten man probably already "vanished", but the time will come and you won't be ready.

Could have been like a trial run or something to see how she would react if caught. Or just misdirection for the body packer. Speaking of which, that NCIS episode where the dude and girl are trying to get drugs out of the dead guy is pretty fucked up

Just once I want a zombie story that doesn't end in "turns out the alleged zombie did something stupid with drugs which explains all their actions".
