Man, Uncharted 2 still holds up extremely well.

Barely any time has elapsed since its release.

I think the general mechanics aren't good enough for the game to age well long-term, but that probably doesn't matter much.

3 and a half years is actually a pretty long time in a generation of hardware, and some earlier to mid gen games can sometimes seem fairly archaic in ways in comparison to late gen games.

Lazy ass developers.

In past console cycles, 2009 would have been pretty late in the generation. I'm really not seeing this.

I just replayed a big chunk of the game a few days ago, and yeah, the pacing is immaculate for most of the game. Chapter 2 or 3 all the way up until the Monastery is by far the best stretch of this franchise. Everything lasts exactly as long as it should and not a minute more, the mechanics are the tightest Naughty Dog has done in UC, and the character back and forth dialogue is top notch.

Yup

This is the only black mark on that stretch of chapters. The sooner brute enemies and bullet sponges get out of semi-realistic shooters, they better we'll all be. There was no need for this encounter aside from "Well, we need a fake challenge. Toss in a bullet and explosive resistant enemy."

And yup. What you needed to do was poorly telegraphed to the player. Shoot him until his helmet flies off? Wha???

He should've dived through a window, knocking Drake's gun out of his hand, then force you into a fist fight with him. It's one of those moments I notice a lot this gen where a few minor changes would've made a huge difference. Makes me wonder if that's due to shoehorning certain types of action scenes into places without thinking how to get them to make sense, then trying to do that after the fact

Still think the Uncharted series is one of the most overrated series in recent memory. The shooting mechanics really aren't that great and I think most enemy encounters were more frustrating then fun. Nathan also falls into this bizarre middle ground of being simultaneously a superhero and an average Joe. He's a mass murdering super soldier that wears a plain t-shirt. It's so weird. The second game never really fixed the problems of the first, it just made the parts that were already pretty good even better.

Great presentation though, I'll give 'em that.

lol...act like this game came out last gen or something.

Uncharted 2 > Uncharted 3 so of course it holds up. Even Uncharted 1 is still pretty good.

So you can all stop guessing:

NA October 13, 2009
JP October 15, 2009
AU October 15, 2009
EU October 16, 2009
NA October 18, 2010 (Game of the Year edition)

What should a treasure hunter/adventurer be wearing?

One thing that doesn't hold up for U2 is the multiplayer.

1.05 ruined that and ND never reverted back to the gold that was the beta/1.00-1.04 era of funness. Which is weird as they NAILED the casual/fun of multiplayer for the series only to listen to whiners and ruin the game for everyone else. :/ In fact, it kinda ruined the "football"-ness of Plunder. No one wanted to pick-up the treasure and run with it since you could die so much faster than 1.00-1.04's plunder modes.

Ugh! Gross! I take back what I said; what an ugly game!

Anyway, one real criticism that I do have of UC2 is that it's hard to sympathize with Nathan Drake at first. The guy is willing to steal and kill just so he can find treasure, and he's not even poor.

And yeah, the title of the thread is kinda dumb.

But but Tomb Raider gaf says otherwise.
I'm looking forward to playing it, but Tomb Raider really does look like a cheaper knockoff of the Uncharted series. At least as far as the combat is concerned.

You can see that they're trying to capture the same spirit, but the artwork is a bit dull in comparison, and the animation just isn't on the same level.

What is there to hold up? Most of the game is made of linear corridors and simplistic scripted set pieces full of bullet sponge enemies. The train level is great because it's ironically the only one that lets you tackle the objective in two different ways (through the wagons or the roofs). It's a game that really doesn't have much to offer if you don't care for cinematic gameplay.

Gears of Wars Judgment holds up pretty well too.

Good old times.

getting a little long in the tooth according to some of the reviews coming out though ;)

If you haven't burned out on Uncharted I think you'll end up being pleasantly surprised.

Are you even supposed to sympathize with him? He's a pretty selfish guy, but he's still really likable in the end. I think that's the main goal that they had for him as a character.

It'll be interesting to see what people think of it in a decade. Who knows if QTEs, linearity, and simplistic gameplay will hold up well. I'm sure the acting and the set pieces might.

I strongly disagree. Animation is one of Tomb Raider's greatest strengths. Lara's facial animation is also better than Nate's.

Huge step up from UC1. What a package too - the Multiplayer and unlockables were a very nice value proposition. It was sort of like my RE4 of this generation in a way.

I disagree. Tomb Raider is highly inconsistent animations wise. Some are decent to great, others just plain janky and un refined. Maybe it just needed a bit more time in the cooker for extra polish or something.

Of course, take a look at Demon's Souls.

Only because I played Dark Souls at some ugodly downsampled resolution with crazy DoF, and texture mods, insane anti-aliasing, 60fps, and all the other wonderful Durante features.

Then I tried to go back and play Demon's Souls again. :(

Corridors? UC2's shoot outs are usually in arenas. And they're wearing armor, if you want to kill enemies in one hit, y'know, shoot them in the head?

Still the only game that did "epic setpiece" right. As the OP mentioned, it's because it didn't take control of the player or change the mechanics to suit the scene like a certain other game *cough*.

Uncharted 2 has that big production look and feel to it that many games have not be able to achieve.

I think the shooting on it is brilliant as well as the melee fights. They feel intense, challenging and is FUN.

The banter as you said is just unmatched, it adds so much to the game and the characters.

But yes, maybe a little early for this type of thread, but still a good thread!
