Manny Pacquiao will undergo right shoulder surgery later this week to repair a "significant tear" in his rotator cuff, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache told ESPN.com on Monday night.

"We have an MRI scan that confirms he has a rotator cuff tear. He has a significant tear," said ElAttrache, who was still with Pacquiao at his Kerlan Jobe Orthopedic Clinic office in Los Angeles when he spoke to ESPN.com.

ElAttrache said Pacquiao will be out of action between nine months and a year, assuming the surgery and rehabilitation go well.

The day for the surgery has not been set, but it will take place in Los Angeles, Pacquiao adviser Michael Koncz said.

"After speaking with the doctor, it was determined that the best method and approach is for Manny to have surgery," Koncz said. "Manny is doing OK."

He lost. Maybe unfairly, maybe he was injured, but ultimately he chose to fight and lost. It is still very unfortunate if his career ends like this. Hopefully he'll come back from this injury.

The legal implications are interesting. He knew about the injury before the fight and technically lied on the medical form so it wouldn't be delayed. Don't know if it will happen but there was tons of talk about a lawsuit and whether people who bought the fight would be able to get a refund. Interesting talk at least.

Not at all. If anyone is stupid enough to pay for boxing these days, it's totally on them.

especially when it was basically 2 washed up boxers who hadn't knocked anyone out in almost 2 decades combined and weigh as much as your typical 13 year old. they only have themselves to blame for falling for the hype.

Meanwhile, Floyd prepares for his greatest test yet...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I've spent 100 on worse, I was expecting Mayweather to be in turtle mode, I was mostly dissapointed in Pacquiao.

Sure. 100 isn't that much in the big scheme of things, but for all the hype and pomp, we didn't even get both guys at 100 percent!

So is this going to be the controversy around this fight? I was wondering before it began, that when Floyd wins, what kind of long-running controversy was going to put an asterisk on the outcome of the fight.

Hey guys this was my first fight so let me give all you my expert opinion on the state of boxing.

Exactly. Deep down Pacman must of known he was down by a lot of rounds. Why didn't he just go all out, drop his defenses in the last couple of rounds and look for a miracle knockout. It's strange imo.

Well, if Pac's camp lied on the medical release form on purpose then you can argue that buyers were deceived. I have no idea if it happens but I'm sure someone will try.

Fraud is fraud. Not sure why people wouldn't be entitled for a refund considering he lied about his physical condition.

I'd bet they had an agreement. Nobody gets hurt, defensive fight, doesn't matter who wins (ie Mayweather wins), we both get a huge check.

Haven't they already offered most people refunds that had their service disrupted by hackers? Everyone in my workplace that bought it through charter got a refund and a day free.

I don't think boxing is dead. Boxing is a beast globally. In the US, it has crazy competition from other major sports, both in getting the best athletes and eyeballs.

Also, it getting back on free TV will help.

PPV kinda killed boxing in the States, though, in terms of casual appeal.
There are a bunch of defensive ends in the NFL who would probably be good or great boxers if the sport was more relevant. Instead they chose football.

Sucks for him but it's not like people needed anymore ammo against the surroundings of the fight.

lolol dyslexia is funny

People gave him flack for that, but he's laughing all the way to the bank.

Take your Master's in English lit and loans and shitty studio apartment, Floyd says!

He's still a boxing genius.

The real problem is that the popularity of boxing in general has massively declined over the past decades. It's not (just) that other sports are more appealing for prospects, it's that (throughout all divisions) there are simply a lot less people that practice the sport. It's hard to blame them.

The worst thing a boxer can do after a big pay-per-view fight is to moan that they were injured going into the fight. David Haye did it after losing to Klitschko and its bullshit. It does make you feel cheated if you splashed out on the fight. I pay for boxing knowing full well that it could be a complete snooze-fest, or a thrill-a-minute punch out. If a guy flops after 30 seconds, that's just the way it goes. But to knowingly hide an injury which will significantly hinder a fighters ability to compete, whilst shouting from the rooftops about how you're gonna kick ass in the "fight of the century" is selling the world a pup.

I think it's pretty disgusting to give him shit for having a learning disability. The dude is a wife beating shithead, surely that's better to go with. My partner has dyslexia though and seeing the way people treat her over just rubs me the wrong way.

I think it's a chicken and egg problem.

Boxing is less popular and other sports more popular, so the best athletes hitch their wagons with other sports.

Incidentally, the problem with head injuries has been known for boxing for quite some time now, unlike the NFL. The best boxers all started very young as developing world class talent takes time. Parents are less inclined to have little Johnny do youth boxing.

And finally, boxing is an solo sport, so adoption in schools is going to be low. Team sports are gonna monopolize practice facilities and such.
