Wow, good for you. It takes balls to back down and admit you were wrong. Kudos man.

I overreacted and placed my comment really in the wrong thread. Sometimes we have to take a minute or two before we realize if an action was good or not - it would help me immensely to take that time BEFORE posting :(

Thank you, I appreciate the apology.
1. I am(was as we aren't allowed to bitch anymore[good thing really]) against the constant horror news threads that have been increasingly posted in OT the last 1 year or so.

2. I don't see how this thread is in any way or form one of those kinds of news stories. This is a great story btw.

3. Yet, kudos on the warning Gaborn. I've noticed that you've used them lately. Thanks a lot.

4. I don't get why people attack Gaborn concerning horror/sad/depresing news stories(not targeted at V_Arnold). I think Gaborn posts one of those stories once in a blue moon if at all... I guess people just pile on him because he's a 'news' poster they remember *shrugs*

5. Gaborn posts awesome news stories ranging from small topics, very specicific subjects, to news of the grand scale variety. He doesn't do this with any ill intentions, to boost his ego or piss anybody off.

6. Don't really know where I'm headed at... keep on posting...

Thanks a lot, that does mean a bunch :)

No, I don't. I think it's a powerful image though and it's important to remember the true costs of war and to celebrate those who give their lives in the service of our country.

I would be more convinced if I could be certain that you had kept your pants on for the duration of this reply.

further proof that dogs are better than cats.
Who needs further proof. Its like doing an experiment to see if water is wet. We know it is, its just a simple fact. Dogs are superior to cats in every aspect. You wont see this type of loyalty displayed by a cat, and no.. before you come in and say "But my cats different!" It really isnt. How many times has your cat scratched you or snubbed you? Every fucking day? Of course. How many times has my dog deliberately scratched/bitten me or snubbed me? Fucking never.

The dog in the OP is a perfect example of his kind, and it really is heart warming and tragic at the same time. There are few things that will ever love anyone like a dog its owner, or the owner and their dog.

This video is so sad and tragic.

As stated by the top comment:

"Try making your shitty emotionless cats do that."

Well, our cat does just that everytime we come back from vacation (but the cat version, of course). He doesn't stop mewing, purrs like crazy and stays with us sometimes a few hours after we came back. Sure, he doesn't jump on us and "cries" like what we see in the video, but he clearly is very far from being emotionless. That's why that makes me a little sad to read some posts like that.

Dogs are great, cats are great too. They just don't express themselves in the same way. ;)

ok that's the saddest pet picture I've ever seen
i've seen one of a dog right next to its owners corpse. there's another one of a dog laying down on its owners grave site as well.

In the first place this is about a Navy SEAL that died in a well publicized event, that's the saddest part.
Dying for one's country is sad, dying when your country is engaged in a colonialist/imperialist war is another. There's nothing sad to see here.

Was it a waste of life? Yes, but so are the hundreds, if not thousands of so called "insurgents" killed for your hypocritical "security".

And I can't help but facepalm at the "hero" comment. You're a hero if you're a navy seal killed now. the true meaning of hero has been completely lost it seems.

It's always sad when someone dies, for whatever reason. I don't think the war in Afghanistan is a particularly wise thing to be involved in but I have nothing but respect for the people in uniform doing their job.

Did I say otherwise?

Considering how difficult it is to be a Navy Seal, and considering that a "significant number" killed in the helicopter crash he was killed in were the SUPER elite Seal Team 6 (the group that killed Bin Laden) yes, he's a hero (even if he wasn't ST6). I RESPECT the armed forces greatly and whatever my POLICY issues with how we use them I acknowledge that it takes a special person do most of what they do. (and no, I'm not saying that there aren't bad soldiers that do bad things but I don't need to be reflexively negative).

Gaborn (and others posting threads about death, violence and anguish), you might think you provide news, but in reality, you just spread fear and negative emotions with all this.

Feel free to continue (who am I to tell you what to do or what not), but do not think for a second that we would not go with our lives just fine - and in fact, even better - without all the sad news. Why is it that a person has only has to go out of their way if he wants to read GOOD news once in a while?

This from me had to come out eventually, and it is not even in this thread, as the dog shows higher compassion that the majority of people are usually doing, but still.
Sounds like you should grow up. He ALREADY stated in the thread title that it was going to be sad as an UNNECESSARY COURTESY to people that, apparently, can't seem to handle upsetting news.

Edit: Oh, you apologized. Carry on then.

That's really moving. I used to say I didn't care about our family dog, but as time goes by and she gets older (8 years now), I'm starting to get a bit misty eyed whenever I think of the time she'll eventually leave us.

I knew i couldn't click on this thread without some stupid cat vs dog comments. Never change GAF.

Sad story and pic though.

What I don't understand, and what really pisses me off, is that there are people out there that love to claim that animals don't have feelings or attachments like humans do. As if we are the only species in existence capable of feeling.

The fact that animals will mourn when you are gone, and express joy when you return should be enough to shut the naysayers up.

Also, this story is heartbreaking, but profound.

I also loved the link of the guy returning from Afghanistan, and his dog's reaction.

Damn, I love dogs. I've been looking for a small one to give to my wife (we need a dog that's comfortable in apartments; we won't be moving into a house for a little while yet, but a pet would be great company for her). Any suggestions? We're not fans of Chihuahuas, though.

Noone has any right to complain about anyone else's threads until they can make a thread even half as interesting. Go Gaborn. Your threads rock and are a solid chunk of my reason to log on and click on the off topic forum.

This is sad and touching. You don't hear of many cat or other animals having such a passionate reaction to things concerning their owners or human friends. I honestly feel like dogs are one of the few animals that honestly make human friends.

Seriously, most of these fucking cry-babies never create their own threads. Without people like Gaborn consistently creating threads that promote and entice DISCUSSION, there really wouldn't be a reason for NeoGAF to exist.

Don't like a thread? Carry on.

Cool. How do we measure it? ;)

I sometimes think we attribute human characteristics to animals when it's really just our imagination. But at the same time, you can't look at that picture in the OP without saying "damn, that dog knows its best friend is gone forever."

My favorite poem about dogs, though I suppose the roles are reversed from this particular story. It's by the great Robinson Jeffers:

The House Dog's Grave
(Haig, an English bulldog)
I’ve changed my ways a little; I cannot now
Run with you in the evenings along the shore,
Except in a kind of dream; and you, if you dream a moment,
You see me there.

So leave awhile the paw-marks on the front door
Where I used to scratch to go out or in,
And you’d soon open; leave on the kitchen floor
The marks of my drinking-pan.

I cannot lie by your fire as I used to do
On the warm stone,
Nor at the foot of your bed; no, all the nights through
I lie alone.

But your kind thought has laid me less than six feet
Outside your window where firelight so often plays,
And where you sit to read- and I fear often grieving for me-
Every night your lamplight lies on my place.

You, man and woman, live so long, it is hard
To think of you ever dying.
A little dog would get tired, living so long.
I hope that when you are lying

Under the ground like me your lives will appear
As good and joyful as mine.
No, dears, that’s too much hope: you are not so well cared for
As I have been.

And never have known the passionate undivided
Fidelities that I knew.
Your minds are perhaps too active, too many-sided….
But to me you were true.

You were never masters, but friends. I was your friend.
I loved you well, and was loved. Deep love endures
To the end and far past the end. If this is my end,
I am not lonely. I am not afraid. I am still yours.
