Marathon approaching 15k CCU low (sponsored by coachmcguirk91 - still having a blast)

Every great story in human history uses loss and gain to enrich its narrative.

From The Count of Monte Cristo to The Godfather to Deadwood.

The Extraction genre solved that problem in videogames. We should all bow down to its greatness.

8,000 posts and GAF should publish a book on the Marathon CCU numbers. I think some of you spend more time defending this garbage than playing it.

In stories, what enriches the narrative are the lessons (good or bad) the protagonist learns from their loss and how they evolve from that low point on.

You learn nothing from seasonal wipes. Except maybe your limited time on earth may be better spent elsewhere.

Time and it's finite nature is the greatest teacher of all. Marathon is The Book of Five Rings.

You will learn this as you continue to wade into waters where you're the protagonist rather than Nathan Drake or Little Mac.

Bungie just dropped a huge article on updates to try to save the game :messenger_tears_of_joy:.

PvE is coming...
Well they're retarded

Shocker
You never know. Maybe all these changes they are going to do including PVE will be a giant boost to sales and CCU.

But it will be hilarious seeing the hardcore gamers who like it how it is now bicker about injecting more casual features into the game in June.

It is not really a narrative element at all if the loss or gain in question is beyond the control of the author / narrator.

This is why pvp and storytelling make such awkward bedfellows: they are fundamentally at odds with each other. Pvp and story generation, sure (Eve perhaps being the standout example of this).

THE SHORT VERSION (TL;DR)

There's a lot of words ahead, but here's the gist of it:

  • With the first season of Marathon we've created a strong core community.
  • We're embarking on a multi-season journey built around growing from the seed of this strong community.
  • We're looking to solve some pain points for players:
    • Making the game less grindy, more rewarding
    • Making improvements to things like the UI/UX, matchmaking, end game meta, playing as solos/duos, etc.
    • Smoothing out onboarding
  • We're also going to build out more of the core game:
    • Adding new fun and mind-bending content: new and updated zones, Runner shells, new combatants, weapons, loot, and more
    • Building systems to make progressing more interesting
  • We want to build more survival experiences for different moods, like if you want to full sweat or lean back and chill.
    • Exploring more pure PVP, PVE, and PVP-lite experiences
    • Continue experimenting with experimental queues to learn more around these experiences
Other highlights:

  • We're bringing back Duos for Season 2 with a rotating Duos queue.
  • We're testing some experiments in Season 2 around PVE and PVP-Lite modes.
  • We're expanding the max size of your Vault and increasing faction progression rates in Season 2.
  • We'll talk more about Season 2 content like Night Marsh, the new Cradle progression system, and the Runner shell Sentinel, the week of May 25.
If this summary has your interest piqued, read on below for more info on these topics.

How can i learn anything from a third party wiping my progress?

Still not interested until they actually cement and have developed something.

But we were told by the true fans, that anything less than the pure pvp sweatfest as presented would kill this game.

Surely, those diehards are going to reject any pve or pvp-lite changes. That would be a compromise to the perfection which is Marathon, as they told us over and over again.

They told us it would ruin the beautiful and perfect vision on Bungie.

They had conviction in their words.

Surely, they won't do a complete fucking 180 and fellate Bungie for doing what it should have done from the start, right?

Wait, really?

runs off to read the update news.....

Ah, still sounds very "early access" and more of this experimenting stuff. If they ever implement an actual PvE mode I'll be interested, but at least they are looking into it, thats promising for a casual player like me!

I'm sure this'll piss off some sweats on the other hand. Some players hate having their crutches taken away.

Honestly, I think it was just them running mindless defense and most of them are going to be complete fucking hypocrites and praise Bungie as an own to "the haters".

They have no internal consistency at all.

Edit:

I will honestly respect any of the current Marathon Enjoyers that rejects the turn to pve. Shows that they meant what they said. I will question their gaming taste but respect that they were keeping it real.

Ya. I thought Joe Zegler was a big time promoter of grinding it out during the weekdays to blow the load on Cryo days...... "it's like a weekend event".

So much for that. A ton of Marathon gamer will just splice over to PVE.

Don't worry, we will still have the pain of 'those people playing PvE should only ever get green loot and get no faction rep'

No, I've been consistently saying Marathon (and the genre) is Star Trek.

You'll have your intense Borg episodes. You'll have your planet of the week episodes. Your funny Q episodes...

It was never going to remain strictly high sweat PvP experience. The genre welcomes all.

That is not a genre, its adding different modes to the game. MP shooters have been doing that since the 90s and only now bungie seems to be figuring it out.

They're basically saying you have to start wearing adult diapers because your CCU thread is headed for a brick wall.
LOL. I hope so because recapping the game's daily drop down to 12k peaks and 3k valleys is getting tiring.

Youd think a game that started dev in 2019 costing $100s of million who made Halo and Destiny could do better 12k daily peaks after 2 months.

It won't. It's a fools errand.

A tacked on PVE mode might give you a surge of players just because of the news cycle. This will quickly die because shocker, a tacked on PVE mode doesn't have longevity.

Bungie are then forced increase dev cost even further to continue to support both a PVP mode and a PVE mode.

We saw this with Destiny. It doesn't work.

Marathon was built primarily as a PvP game.

But as I've been saying since the dawn of time, it was always going to pull in a wider variety of players. The Star Trek vision was correct all along.
Sounds like a cop out :pie_roffles: (y)

But its okay, enjoy your new coop shooter. I like some of those myself too.

A tacked on PvE mode doesn't give me hopes. If the game was originally designed around PvE, then that's a different story.

It's like when they add those co-op missions to Battlefield or Call of Duty. They're usually pretty bad.

But hopefully they add something worthwhile. PvE is their wheelhouse.
