Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

Had my first run ... wow that was rough but so much fun, map is awesome, literally SO MUCH STUFF map event wise to explore and learn which is cool, we spent too long trying to find security key cards to extract and got caught between 2 squads who ended up hunting us down.

I like the fact when you do a run it gives you a Cryo sponsored kit so you can enter in again, but im going to have to not play with randos, ive been lucky that ive had 1 teammate who talks and coordinate, but one just runs off trying to loot as much stuff as possible then dies to a squad leaving us 2 to challenge the vaults.

Either way, awesome idea and executed really well, with some of the loot i've seen, I can understand why its timed only on weekends
You only get one free 5k kit and that's it.

Tips for cryo:

-First room you fight bots in always has one security tag on the purple bot and another either on an additional bot or laying around somewhere.
-Next bot room has usually 2 purple bots for more tags
-Hacking security clearance panels jumps you up several security clearance blocks
-Control requires clearance level 1, and is where all players are funneled to do PvP at.
-Clearance 2 lets you explore the majority of the map
-Level 3 is mandatory to exfil
-Warden can spawn on map and if you fight him he locks the room down
-Vaults require 6 batteries, one cryo tube, and apparently a clearance key (gold or purple) I cannot confirm this yet
-When you want to exfil you need Clearance level 3, then find a terminal to activate exfil, then it'll ping a spot on map you have 3.5 minutes to get to in order to get out. Only one can be active at a time.

——

Assassin and shotgun ruin the map for me. Can't push them especially if they use bubble shields to delay. Snipers and ares are useless here. Green shields are trash stop bringing in anything but blue and up. Bring level 3 heals and self revives.

Just seen Vault 6 has RNG loot inside RNG Loot and caused the leading group to fail because the RNG didnt work out, that bit is abit shitty.

Played a few more round and now im out of gear to play anymore but yeah, think this is the best map / raid Bungie has ever made, there is SO MUCH to it, I hope they add more stuff to the current maps, secrets, events etc

It's no taken king for me (peak) but it feels above VoG.

One observation I had is I didn't see any mechanics that would prevent solo runs, would just need to tune the enemies for solo play but I doubt they will do it. Might try again today, it's cool 👌

Oh boy

Third Cryo run, actually found the guarded exfil but there was no way to activate it 🤦‍♂️ I'm determined to finish this with randoms, no mics, prove it can be done lol. They got taken out by rival runners while I was exploring a way forward, I went back, took out a Triage and revived them both, I think the rival crew hightailed it with the timer ticking down.

Without having played it yet, the map and gameplay looks cool as fuck. But I know will be frustrating as all hell for average Joe players like myself. Cool concept, cool to watch skilled players play but frustrating and rage inducing to actually play myself. Keen to see it though.

Seems I was right, only new enemy is a single, optional boss. Disappointing but Cryo is cool as fuck, hopefully they have plans to shake things in the not-too-distant future, give the UESC a vacation.

The good thing is you only need to unlock access to the vault once, then you can repeat it as many times as you want

Compiler is an alien in one tiny part of the ship.

The NuCaloric story also confirms an alien contagion, and there's also the anamoly story from Traxus.

Likely:
-More aliens aboard the marathon or on the planet
-Time shenanigans from anamoly

For better or worse we will get a D1 drip feed of content with more stuff to fight.

I am surprised the compiler wasn't Orion. He's on a different part of the ship then.

I really wish they would consider at the end of each main villain content arc, to release a solo variant so we can all enjoy the lore. It can keep the loot for uniques, I just want to experience the fights etc without no lifing it with others.

I'm 38 … who the fuck is the audience? Streamers and people without jobs or social lives?

Edit: I just feel after today alienated from this thing I love. Like Bungie wants to chase such a hyper specific one in a million kind of player for great content that most will not even get to experience. What a waste of time and resources.

Seems that way. Briefly watched a streamer play earlier when I was kicking off my twitch drops and he was like "I can see why they have made it available only on weekends and I agree with it" or something along those lines. Yea of course you do, you are the target no lifer audience. Don't worry about the rest of us that have jobs, kids, other commitments. I'm all for having challenging and engaging content but it needs to be something achievable. Like I said earlier, this map (haven't played yet) looks cool and all that but will be a miserable experience for my old ass.

Hasn't it already been cleared making it achievable?

I feel exactly the same unfortunately. Looking at my vault and having real life commitments and not sure how this is built for the average Joe? It should just get easier the more runs we do to get used to the layout but then I look at other players I'm coming up against and the gear they are running and I can't compete. Everyone and their granny is running purple shields for a start 😬

I don't even own the game because it's too sweaty for me, in destiny my average kd was like slightly below 1! But I didn't risk anything so it was still a fun side activity. I like the art in marathon, down to the brutalist interface but... it's just not for me.

For what it is, the cryo map as interesting as it is amazing to see people explore. It offers a vision of what the game might have in store, but it also but also has me questioning if the game is going to be sustainable the way they have it set up.

Seeing people compare the map to Destiny raids, saying that strats will be found, guides made, and that there's lots of time left in the season... that all looks like cope. To some extent maybe, but they're a million miles apart.

Destiny was already far too reliant on having access to trusted teammates for endgame activities (on many levels, not just in terms of skill and ability/willingness to communicate) and as someone who stayed with the game when most left, that only got worse. Even if Marathon players pass that check, it's not like Destiny where they could put the time in and just learn, have a plan and execute, even cheese if necessary. The hardest check in this game for a huge majority of the players is other players, and that negates all of that talk about strats as a saviour.

For me, Destiny's millstone and undoing was in large part the amount of resources and effort that went into content only a fraction of the player base could really engage with. Marathon has taken this and turned it up to 11. This style of endgame is just leaning in to all that.

When I see players that love the game in here and elsewhere effectively resigned to probably not being able to effectively engage with endgame content for a number of valid reasons, I see a highly polished, unforgiving and niche game now offering reasons for people to drop it or put it on the back burner as something to just pop into occasionally, rather than become the main game everything else gets squeezed in around... and with 3 month resets, I don't even see much appeal to the back burner prospect as progress will be minimal and then gear will vanish, with just the factions progress/whatever remaining. That doesn't seem healthy for a game that's had such financial and manpower backing when the one-time cash cow Destiny is essentially dead.

My opinion is probably not worth shit, because I don't even own or play the game, but I knew it was beyond what I can mechanically deal with just on a basic level and stayed away, especially because the 2 people I've played Destiny with for over a decade are on a different timetable and I was always the one getting the carry in the PvP shit I only took part in reluctantly. Still, I'm still addicted to watching the game for now, I do understand the draw for those that have all the time in the world, the skill to perform, the friends to lean on, etc.

Think they should give you 3 free kits a week so the average Joe can have a fair crack at it.

No way am i wasting my vault with randoms while i learn the map

Yes. By sweats.

People have 1 million+ credits and vaults worth 500k. Mine is worth 120k with 30k credits. They're not average Joe players.

Doesn't that give you something to strive towards if you like the game? I'd imagine people would eventually catch up. Personally, I'd rather take on something fun that I never complete than run on yet another content treadmill.

It's kinda interesting that negative terms are used for players who play a single game seriously (sweat, no lifer) but neutral or positive terms are used for casuals players in discussions about preferences.

Of course. Hopefully I get a chance to complete it before the end of the season, before I lose all my stuff in the wipe. I don't think implying that because it has already been beaten, beaten by players that have played the game nonstop since launch and have a lot of the best gear in the game within 12 hours of release that it is achievable by your average player. I'm sure it will get easier as everyone (including me) gears up, learns the map and all that but I still don't think it's going to be something that the majority is going to complete. I think it's going to be the minority that can complete it regularly, or at all.

Next time I will use the term high achiever then ;)

Keep it negative imo. I'm partial to sweat vs scrub for the alliteration myself.

Clear rates for high end stuff is pretty low in most games. Savage clear rates in FFXIV are only like 10% or so despite being pretty straightforward because it requires committing to an activity over time. Criterion rates are even lower. I'd prefer Bungie to keep making the rest of the game exciting for the masses while continuing with weird experiments like cryo archive for the dedicated crowd. I reckon Bungie can please both crowd.

They always overtune raids the first week for comp mode. I'm sure they will do the same for this eventually. Also this was day one which means only the most dedicated were jumping in day one on the PvP side. I'm not saying it's going to no means be easy. But I wouldn't despair from watching today's runs.

Yeah, I had a couple of runs, then realised how expensive it was going to get and noped out. It'll get easier as time goes on.

Arsic Arsic Did you really blow all your vault on the brand new hardest map in the game with a bunch of randoms? No wonder you are depressed if so.

What's mid range out of curiosity?

I have a few systems. My 4070 build in the living room with a Ryzen 5800x3d gets around 60fps with dips into the 40s when shit goes down in the vault. Admittedly i have not fucked around with the settings as i was busy not dying. I get around 100 in Perimeter and Marsh for reference.

My 5080 Asus G14 with Ryzen AI 9 370 is almost unplayable. I know they officially don't support laptops but still. My other one with a I9 14900hx and 4090 fairs a lot better but still not great.

The game looks amazing, especially in the Vault, but its really not doing anything out of the ordinary, one can only assume they added the layer of polish to the visuals but didn't get time to optimise any of it. Shit needs sorting and pronto.

If I were Bungie I'd just enable solo for folks who just want to try. It may or may not be impossible for solo but whats the downside of letting people try? You need the fans to be totally on board, let alone grow the playerbase. I respect their vision for endgame content but accessibility should be as open as possible.

I've always wanted matchmaking for Raids in Destiny, however disastrous it may be. People will find ways, let them try. Glad to see its another well made map from Bungie. The aspiration should be the earnable cosmetics at completion of challenges, unique loot, not how restrictive it is to access the endgame. It will just slowly kill drive to strive in the game. Although I dont raid in D2, i was given avenue to participate in GM nightfalls and solo dungeon runs. Marathon has none of these at the moment.

Games just released and they always cater to the hardcore raiders and players first few weeks of released content

I wouldn't despair and I'm sure Bungie will learn from this as their first try, great idea I seen earlier in the thread about 3 free kits for crypto every weekend.

Be interesting to seee how they try to cater to casual audience but now the compiler has been defeated, no doubt they will wind it down to cater to casuals

another bungie game another game where they fuck everyone over unless you are a no life and treat the game like a second job.

had my fun with it but fuck this. i guess they'll never learn. Feels like Destiny 3.

I fear this game will be used as the ultimate example for how sweaty, high skill players can kill games. It feels super unhealthy already.

I'm afraid I have to agree. Seeing what needs to be done and coordinated with to succeed in Cryo is kind of a kick in the teeth for people who only play even a few hours a day and don't have hardcore teams to group with. This would have been the perfect game for me and, say, people from my WoW guild back in Burning Crusade days when the game was our life. That's the type of gamer you need to be to enjoy Marathon fully.

They need to pivot hard to get back on track. They're losing it. They're only chasing the streamers and the unemployed. That's not where the money is. Maybe I'll take a night off, been playing daily. See how that affects my mindset.

I fear what we're seeing is a massive drop off from low skill players. If 15% of players are quitting every week, I bet that's mostly the bottom 15% of the skill spectrum.

Marathon is just not a fun game if you don't like drinking red bull, doing cocaine, and nailing head shots. As a mid skill player, I fear my time is coming.

Dunno im still having a ton of fun, but i know im probably never gonna beat cryo with randoms unless they change it later

Good morning, .quick question for you marathon fans out there. I just picked up a PS5 pro want to get into Marathon. Is it worth it for a solo guy who's a big Bungie fan?

Dunno im still having a ton of fun, but i know im probably never gonna beat cryo with randoms unless they change it later
I'm shocked this isn't a bigger complaint...

Around 10% of my matches, and that number appears to be growing, I just get instant deleted.

I go from a state of low intensity / excitement (looting or running across the map to a new PoI) to instant knocked. That means 10% of my games (and growing) are awful experiences.

I suspect the top 20% of the skill curve is having a reasonably fun time with Marathon as they push out the bottom 20% of the low skill players.

Marathon does a ton right but their sandbox is dog water imo.

I have never been insta killed in this game. I'm not a good fps player.

I accept that I won't complete cryogenic the first weekend I play it, I do feel I will eventually get it though.

Playing with randoms is always going to be a lottery. If you want to win more, team up with people consistently.

For you guys above talking about sweaty games and cryo, it's really simple.

The game is just a harder core extraction game. That's how it's designed, whereas ARC is supposed to be much gentler and has bigger maps so it's less about PvP or AI bot gunfights.

And cryo is meant for gamers that love challenge, grinding and being an extraction game is willing to gamble it to achieve.

It's just that Bungie couldnt promote that because they knew it'd turn off gamers if they told the world months ago to wait for it (whether it wasnt ready or was aways planned as an end of March content drop doesnt matter) it is a hardcore grind map requiring min stats, trios and weekends only.

If they told everyone, sales would sink even worse than now. Expectations for everyone was it was some kind of challenging end game map, but nobody thought it would have these parameters.

It's just that for people who like extraction shooters (already a harder core mode than traditional MP modes) it's a matter of whether you are a casual extraction gamer, or you are a gamer who enjoys challenge and going all out. Most people arent like that. Play COD and most people play TDM or one of the easy to understand mainstream objective modes. Hardly anyone plays Gun Game, or S&D or hardcore mode where you get half the life and no mini map.

Cryo map is for the gamers who got the time, willing to grind and want to play with the best gamers who can do it. Similar to gamers who want to play with the best who can hack it (like enjoying SBMM playing in matches with top ranked gamers). It's a mode not meant for loners (solo lone wolf players), or players barely qualifying and getting smoked the one time every month they can join. And that assumes the guy even has time to do it on weekends.

The mode is meant for core gamers who got the time, skill, and mentality to do it. Some do, some dont. When I play shooters, I know I dont. When used to play COD a lot I was actually a really good player racking up k/d and wins, but I didnt care one bit playing Gun Game, hardcore mode or any obscure stuff. I just want to join the masses and play some normal games in the popular modes. The key difference is that when Activision promotes another 5 maps are coming soon, the game is already filled with tons of content. So adding more maps is bonus. Also, most of these maps get tossed into the rotation no strings attached. Although there might be some that are walled off for certain modes, but most are just more normal maps for everyone to join. It's not a make or break if the 5 maps come and go, and Activision hell no isnt going to tell websites dont do a review until the new map pack comes.

The difference is COD going from let's say 12 maps to 17 isnt a big deal. Heck, I'd even argue a lot of the time the extra maps suck vs the default maps. But Marathon going from 3 to 4 is huge. BUT, if a gamer cant or hates cryo, that gamer is really stuck back at 3. For the core gamer doing cryo every week, it's a boost to 4 maps. But for many it's really just the same 3.

The problem Bungie had was they couldnt communicate it because sales werent great. So they hooked in the gamers interested in Marathon hoping all of you expected cryo map to be a cool 4th map that could be accessible by everyone at any time. But it's not. Everyone knew it was an challenging end game map as per info last year, but not with these kinds of limitations. It'd be like a racing game promoting more challenging tracks coming end of month, but turns out it could only be played on weekends for gamers who bought S-class sportscars. Or an RPG who promoted new content soon before it launched, but turns out it's only for level 50 characters and all characters need weapons minimum +2. It's too bad they werent clear on the direction.
