Marathoning a TV series

It depends. If I'm really into a show, then I could watch maybe 4-5 episodes without tiring. Generally I try to do 1-2 episodes a day for hour long dramas and 3-4 episodes for half hour comedies. Sometimes I watch more, sometimes less. It depends.

I can usually do like six - ten episodes of a half hour comedy in a row (I recently marathoned through Peep Show and was watching a six episode season a sitting), but less for hour long shows or dramas (currently doing about two or three for Supernatural).

I think 24 is the most addicting show there is. I remember staying up all night watching S4-S5. I probably started at midnight and stopped at 1 PM, once.

I think it's more fun to do if you've got someone to marathon a show with. My girlfriend and I have been together for around 10 months now, and in that time we've marathoned quite a few shows:

- Louie
- Scrubs
- How I Met Your Mother (didn't find it to be nearly as horrible as GAF made it out to be)
- Hell on Wheels
- 30 Rock
- Sherlock
- Breaking Bad

We're in the middle of an 'It's Alway Sunny in Philadelphia' marathon. We really like looking for new shows to watch together, it's fun to talk about certain characters and storylines, etc.

I can keep going for maybe 6-9 episodes before you start forgetting whats going on and/or start missing details.

Depends in the show. If its something like the wire I can do two episodes a day before I feel too depressed to continue. If its something light hearted and a sitcom I can easily go twelve to fourteen episodes deep a day. So it depends on show length and content.

I can do 4 episodes of a show in one sitting, regardless of whether it's an hour or half-hour. After 4 episodes, I get fatigued because I need variety, otherwise the show will become stale to me.

Depends on how bored I am. During the harshest months of winter when going outside during free days means walking in a foot of snow and driving on icy roads, I will stay in the house and marathon an entire season of 20~ episodes in a day if I really enjoy the show.

I find that I can only do it with shows that have an ongoing storyline that continues from episode to episode; so I can't really marathon shows like X-Files or Sliders, where each episode has its own story, 'freak of the week' stuff.

But a show like Breaking Bad? I watched three seasons of that in a couple of days.

I can keep going until i am done.

When i had back surgery i watched the entire 24 series in about 8 days and the only breaks i took were sleep/food/bathroom breaks, but then again i couldn't really move for about 10 days. When i don't have that kind of free time i usually knock out 4-5 episodes a day depending on the day but as far as getting bored, if it's a show that really peaks my interest or a show i love like The Shield or Walking Dead i can keep watching until my body requires sleep or i need to use the bathroom/eat.

I've Marathoned some shows. Mostly those that have cliffhangers or intense revelations at the end of most every episode.

Seasons 1 and 2 of Dexter
Justified
Game of Thrones (I watched all of season 2 in about a day and a half to prepare for a GoT season finale party)

But I most prefer it for comedies

Futurama is one I Marathon on a semi regular basis because, god damn, it's a great show.

Haha, I remember when BSG came into my life. That thing dominated my life for the better part of a week or so, back to back.

Marathoning shows is how I normally watch things. I can't get into the habit of tuning in each week. I'd rather wait it out for all the episodes to be available, so I can decide how and when I get to watch them.

Same here. I don't watch shows until they're over. I guess super long stuff like The Office or Bleach is an exception, but with that sort of thing I watch until I catch up and then wait a couple years or so.

I generally watch 3 shows at a time and watch 1-2 episodes of each per day.

I fucking love marathoning.

Did the first 5 seasons of LOST in a few weeks, first 3 seasons of Dexter in a couple weeks, first 2 seasons of The Wire in a couple weeks, first 4 or so seasons of How I Met Your Mother in a couple weeks, all seasons of Curb Your Enthusiasm in a few weeks.

And more I'm sure.

Edit: Ah yes, Breaking Bad, 24, Game of Thrones, and Burn Notice.

This. Once you watch 3 episodes of it, you wont stop.
. they really know how to do.cliffhanger episodes.

I watched the first 3 seasons of Lost in just a few days. Never had any other show grab me the way it did.

More recently, I found a JTV channel showing a loop of Star Trek TNG. Watched that for about 15 hours a day for a few days too.

Did Breaking Bad over the space of a few days back in September. After the last episode I checked out Wikipedia to see how long I had to wait for more. Yep.. :/

Also marathoned Dexter shortly after Breaking Bad. Took a week, maybe a little more. And recently, The Walking Dead. Couple of days to get through that.

Good stuff. But I agree, when you finish, waiting for more or knowing you have ages to wait for more episodes is shit.

In one sitting the longest I ever did was a couple seasons of Lost (seasons 3.5-6). I got home friday night from FNM and started watching, and finished every episode from those seasons in one huge marathon leading to the series finale that Sunday night. I had about an hour left to kill before the finale started too. Seasons 1-4 of Breaking Bad in a week was fun, and when I was deep into my Star Trek watch I could do a season a week while working full time.

I tend to have a show open on one monitor and my normal browsing on another. Same if I'm replaying a game (like when I did some Mass Effect replays to 100% them), I'll have a show open if I dont have to really pay attention to the game. Some shows I really get into and they fly by, others not so much, but marathoning works better for me. It's why I usually refuse to watch a show with another person, way too limiting.

I did that with LOST. Started a few weeks before the final season aired and finished in time to watch the last season live with GAF.

Going to marathon homeland soon when I have some time.

If its a show I'm into, I can marathon all day.

Just got a treadmill in the house, so its a nice way to marathon some TV shows.

Also watching West Wing at the moment.

can usually sit through 3 40-60 min episodes before its too much, a few series were the exceptions and i couldnt get enough

It all depends on what it is and my mood, I guess. When my wife wants to watch TV series I usually can only take 2-3 episodes at a time. I hadn't really marathoned a lot of anime in a while either, but I guess lately I have been more in the mood, since I watched the last 36 episodes of Eureka Seven in 4 days on Crunchyroll since they were going to take it down after that, and that was with having to work on 3 of those days as well.

I think the most I ever did was watching all 76 episodes of Marmalade Boy in 3 days during a break from school - basically all I did was get up, watch episodes, only stop to eat meals, then go to sleep when I got tired.

I did this with a few shows, namely The Wire, The Shield, Band of Brothers off the top of my head. A few anime series as well a long time ago.
On one hand, being able to get the complete story without having to wait is awesome. On the other, it's also really addicting and takes up most of my time for those few days.

I'm terrible at marathoning and catching up so I generally avoid TV shows that have a ton of seasons/episodes unless someone gives me a really good recommendation. >.<

On occasion I do. I used to use netflix dvd's for shows though, so I had to deal with the mailing returns and waiting on the new dvds to arrive and stuff. So most shows I have seen in the past were slow burns.

Really glad that digital downloading and streaming video is taking off. I marathoned as much of six feet under as I could before stopping in the final season (I just don't like the show).

I would do about 3-5 episodes in a sitting. I marathon'd LOST, Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, Game of Thrones and a number of other good shows. When the show is fantastic.. its not work, its pure entertainment.

I watched all of Star Trek Back to Back with breaks for sleeping and toilets only when unemployed.

I got a buddy to build me a Chronological playlists and just marathoned the entire thing. I was keeping my hands busy by playing games.

I did the same with Buffy, Angel, Spartacus and the US office.

I live by marathoning tv shows now. Whatever I'm doing i have a new series running on a second monitor unless I'm devoting myself to a game.

Being Employed now has really hampered it but I still find time.

Currently Watching Psych and reverting to the usual random select of Star Trek Episodes on netflix when trying to sleep

Yup. Can you imagine if you started watching the show the moment it premiered on TV? Must've been really painful to see each episode a week for 8 years.

WTF are they going to release the earlier seasons on blu!?

Yeah, I'm waiting on that too. I don't wanna re-watch it on DVD again.

I watched Lost in a little over a week. I fast forward some parts. I dont understand how people were able to tune in weekly. i'd want my answers asap and not whatever years later.

Desmond was worth it though.

I once watched 14 hours straight of BSG. I think that's my record.

It was torture but I turned it into an event. My friends and I would often hit up this bar that showed Lost. I'd also get a traditional Lost pizza and eat it during the episode every week I watched at home. 98% of the time it was this one:

I've only had like one since. I rarely see a reason to buy it. Doesn't have that Lost taste.

I basically watched Archer in a weekend. I regretted it afterwards because now I have no Archer to watch.

I watched Lost Season 1 - 2 in about three days during summer break. I've never enjoyed sleep deprivation more.

Nowadays I pace myself if I can. Break it up with other shows. 2 is my max until I decide I want to prolong the goodness.

I don't often marathon, but when I do it's usually capped at about 5 episodes a day. In the case of comedies, sometimes 6 (which is only the average length of a movie anyway).

When I was blowing through the first four seasons of The Big Bang Theory, I could get through 4-6 eps a day depending on how I felt.

I've gotten through 4-5 episodes of longer shows, but this doesn't happen often. When I was doing my series run of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine there was an instance where I watched 5 episodes in an afternoon->evening time span. I was actually using the show to procrastinate for doing college homework. The eps were around 42 minutes a piece so that was like 4 hours worth with breaks. I can't think of an instance when I've watched more than that.

Marathon fatigue is less about the show itself and more about the act of watching television in general. At a point I just feel the need to move away from the TV and do something else.

I have bagged a few suggestions from this thread, thanks guys. I will be doing The Wire and The Shield for sure, probably 24 and West Wing after that. Need more free time!

Just got another frustratingly measly 3 episodes of The Walking Dead watched, next marathon goes at my pace. :)

I watched the first two series of the Wire with a mate over the space of two days. Lots of pizza was consumed.

Oh, to be a bachelor again :P

Homeland IMO is one of those shows that is better when you marathon it.

I've just got into Boardwalk Empire recently. I watched 6 episodes one day and the other 6 the next. Unfortunately it's back to work so season 2 is going to be spread out more.

No limit if I am enjoying the show, given enough food and me not having to worry about anything else I can watch as many as my body allows. I have not marathoned many shows besides the first few seasons of Breaking Bad though which was the last I recall marathoning, will do it for The Walking Dead (going to give this another try) or Game of Thrones later this year probably.
