Marc Maron Defends Amy Schumer (Audio w/link)

Is this the type of joke that multiple people can come up with or are these highly nuanced jokes?

I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that two or more comedians can come up with the same joke, and it would be impossible to know every person's material ever recorded to not accidentally make the same one.

... an army of unfuckable hate nerds. They play videogames all day then they watch MMA then they spend the evening jerking off to deep throat gag porn and then they wake up and put a few hours in to shaming Amy"

Hahaha. that was great.

I haven't listend to it yet but I can just hear this in his voice lol. If he is saying that there is a crossover between GG and this he is spot on. These issues overlap on the MRA Venn diagram.

That article has an update if you bothered to read it. You basically just posted a source that contradicts you.

Of course there's a crossover, when Milo Yiannopoulos is tweeting about her.

An update which contradicts KHarvey's claim that those women "retracted their claims and no longer support their accusations."

You might as well give up -- people ignore facts that don't support their beliefs. This guy is going to believe what he wants about her regardless of any factual information you have. It's like BoB thinking the world is flat ... You can't fix it.

Someone just posted a quote from the radio show one of the other comedians called in to. Did you read it?

You: Their complaints were nonsense. They've since retracted them.

I suppose what you meant to say is: They stand by their complaints. One of the women says she went too far.

Once I went to a standup night and saw Brooks Whelan, Chelsea Paretti, and two of the warmup comics make literally the same joke within an hour of each other. The baffling thing wasn't that they all went for the same lazy joke, it was that they didn't even listen to each others sets to realize that the audience had already heard the exact same joke.

This actually happened with Seinfeld and his opener when they were in Ottawa. I forget the guy's name. Black dude, Chappelle-esque delivery. 50-55, but yeah they're friends and were doing like 15 shows together.

Joke was about the buffet at their hotel. Essentially the same joke, different delivery. Both got laughs, but both the wife and I found it odd that they didn't compare notes.

I don't get why saying that shit is remotely okay but then getting on people for "shaming" Amy (or anyone) is cool

She was wrong and has backed away from her initial accusations. It's clear that nothing happened if you listen to comedians discuss the issue. It's also the case that joke thieves are found pretty quickly and comedians don't defend them.
Ok, then there's really nothing to go on anymore.

Shaming the shamers kind of thing. I wouldn't get wound up over it even if loved throating porn, MMA and videogames. It's a funny line like the hentai watching, single, non-parent Trump supporters line from last week.

Story Update 1/20/16: All three women have since deleted their tweets and Amy has responded and tweeted that she would never ever steal jokes, and also spoke out explaining where her jokes came from. Amy Liebman also clarified her original statement, with a tweet that said she never said Amy stole her joke, she just said it was the same, and that she wrote it first.

I meant a link saying they were still accusing her. But ok...

It's weird how Maron was thrown into this, all because some dipship cut up some stuff he said and that Opie and Jim didn't call up Mark and say "hey, is this right?" I mean, some guy just sends in audio and you take it at face value? Then again some guy (an unfuckable hate nerd perhaps) wakes up one day and just does that in the first place?

I mean, that's the kind of people you're dealing with, and Maron takes them to task. Of course he throws out Gamergate as well, it's the same kind of BS when it comes to women "in a man's world" and the misogyny that is synonymous with that.

This isn't word -for-word theft like Carlos Mencia - who also went for specific jokes that comics were even known for on top of nearly identical delivery. Schumer's stuff is pretty general jokes. If anything, she just wasn't all that original, but I've never found her standup overly original in the first place. I like her more as an actress and writer. The skit on her show, 12 Men Inside Amy Schumer, is pretty brilliant.

Amy Schumer stole some jokes from some female comedians.Their complaints were predictably shouted down.

Well, currently we're down to one female comedian still claiming so, and a mountain of performers coming out and defending Schumer. In a tight industry where bald faced joke stealing is a way to never work again.

I'll go with what her peers are saying.

Because their complaints were complete nonsense. They've since retracted them.

This assessment is as dumb as your "people are only attacking her because she's a woman" analysis in the original thread. Deleting a tweet doesn't indicate it's a retraction. It could just mean they don't want to stoop to her level or have her followers abuse them on social media.

Tip: Read thread, then post.

I think the Louie episode with Dane Cook kind of says it all. Comedians spend a lot of time in clubs with other comedians and hear a lot of jokes and you're going to just subconsciously remember some funny things that happen and not even remember where you heard it, or if you heard it, at a certain point. Hell, Maron had an episode of his IFC show on the very subject, where he tells another comedians joke on Conan and the comedian calls him up and asks him to "make it right" by getting him a TV deal or whatever. It was pretty funny, but yeah, most successful comedians do not hold grudges over this kind of stuff because it could happen to anyone who has been telling jokes for years.

They retracted their tweets after she reached out to them to talk about it. Doesn't seem like it was due to pressure, but rather after talking it out face to face.

So if someone squirrels away after facing backlash from someone very famous, they were actually just talking nonsense - despite video evidence. I'm learning very progressive things from this thread.

I'll never understand this non-sense. Filmmakers have been riffing each other through out film history. I would find it comical if Spielberg got pissed at QT for riffing on City on Fire. Or John Woo calling out everyone for ripping his style.

You can't really fault them for simply listening to audio of Marc on his podcast when it comes up during the middle of a discussion, but the more important thing to note is that even while listening to that cut up audio, all of the guys in the studio were still saying that it wasn't a case of Marc saying Amy stole anything. Jim Norton was specifically pointing out that it was obvious to him that Marc was only talking about his concern that people would think he was stealing from her. So it isn't like they just played some audio and said that Marc called her a thief, just the opposite.

Have you even bothered to listen to any of the interviews referenced here? Every one of your posts digs you deeper and makes you look more and more foolish. Put the shovel down.

Do you follow comedy or know how it works, is written, etc.? I'm gonna guess no since you didn't know who Marc Maron is. If I am right, then why the sudden interest in the comedy world and squabbles between comedians?

True, they didn't jump on Amy or Marc or anything, but if they didn't know the person sending it in (which is already a red flag), and didn't vet the whole thing by listening to the actual source, then it's a little on them. I know they aren't journalists or anything, but it would literally have taken less than a minute.

Then again, if they did do that, we wouldn't have gotten this amazing rant from Marc.

This is just people not liking her trying to tear her down. Compare this shit to Leary or Mencia, that is straight up word for word (or in Leary's case complete personality) plagiarism.

"unfuckable hate nerd"

Lmao I'm saving that term for later, beautiful.

Anyway yeah this shit is dumb, so many people get off on "joke thief!!!" and "heckler DESTROYED!" bullshit on the Internet, I hope that dies out soon.

It is laughably obvious that you didn't listen to the O&J interview being cited. Honestly, it's embarrassing.

The interview where one of the three allegedly accusing Schumer of theft said she doesn't think it was theft? Yeah, I listened to it. You're not so good with the words they're saying.

Are the jokes she's accused of taking all dirty sanchez type sex move jokes because i was telling those back in high school in the 90s and now i'm mad

Are there examples of Mencia stealing jokes word for word like that? I only ever recall Rogan leading the charge in calling Mencia a thief and citing a really easy conclusion joke about building a wall on the border to Mexico as evidence. It always seemed to me like people were just more willing to accept the idea that Mencia was a joke thief because they didn't like him. Something that, aside from the people who have obvious disgusting alterior motives, doesn't seem to apply to Schumer.

I don't really know examples offhand, but I do know that before anything blew up with Mencia, it was a pretty well established thing within comedian circles that you do not want to go up on stage with him watching, because you stuff might end up in his material. There was definitely a reputation well before Rogan took it public.

Ah ok. I didn't, and for the most part still don't, follow that community too closely so I didn't know that was the case.

Mencia is the biggest example of joke thieving as far as popular comedians go. Hasn't even been as relevant as Dane Cook after the myriads of articles and comedians that spoke out against him.

Look up Bill Cosby/Mencia football on youtube.

That's definitely weird. Guessing you're talking about Mario Joyner? He supported Seinfeld when I saw him, he played maroon golf in the show as well. Very funny guy.

I doubt she purposely stole the jokes but I don't doubt she could have accidentally stolen them. I've come up with really funny stuff to later figure out I had heard it somewhere previously and forgotten. It happens.

Even if she hasn't heard them before she shouldn't be performing them because they are not very good.

Actually Mencia admitted to joke stealing on Maron's podcast 6 or 7 years ago. You can probably find it on youtube if you search marc maron carlos mencia joke stealing.
