This is really getting tedious.
I won't even ask if you understand that Marco Polo is an Italian being played by an Italian.

Where did I ever say I had a problem with this? My problem is specifically with the Mighty Whitey trope and the other tropes associated with it. Do you know what a trope is?

Well if it's totally fiction sure, but Marco Polo was italian. I think that's the point they are making.

But no one has said they have a problem with Marco Polo being Italian. It's the trope that's the problem.

People asking for a Khan movie or show Mongol is a pretty solid movie about Khan, shows the unbarbaric side of him so maybe not what people are looking for, he doesn't destroy an entire nation or any thing like that but it was suppose to be the first in a unmade trilogy so it shows his fictionalized beginnings.

Is it a cliche though if its based, at least partially, on true events? I'd agree with you about it being cliched if it was a completely new work of fiction, but Marco Polo was a real guy, who really did travel to China. Calling the show out for having an Italian protagonist is a bit like calling out Braveheart for having a Scottish hero.

I've been waiting for this show since it was announced. Can't wait to watch it in December. It may be horrible, but I'll at least give it a shot. The cinematography looks great so far.

The fact that it's true is not the issue. It's the choice of his story that's the issue. White people aren't the only one's with interesting stories, and yet their stories are chosen 90% of the time within film and television.

The lead looks nothing like Marco Polo...

Yeah the trope is a problem, but in this case, a show about a dude who was actually white, is it really a trope?

No white guys in ROTK. Plus, there's no way they would spend the money to make a TV series based on a novel this long. At least not a Chinese novel.

Netflix could make a big expensive ROTTK series and use it to launch their service in China. Millions of subscribers over night.

I wonder if they could top the Chinese versions in budget, cause the first one did hold the world record for most expensive television show for a few years until Walking With Dinosaurs beat it.

Really? That's an interesting factoid. And who knew Walking with Dinosaurs was so expensive?

That said, someone should absolutely fund an awesome and epic Genghis Khan production with amazing production values and distribute it to the world. They won't make any money, but it would be a damn fine thing to see.

There is. Shame the sequels haven't been made yet (and I doubt they will ever see the light of day).

I'm getting tired of these haunting tracks playing over quick cuts interspersed with one-word-at-a-time-to-reveal-a-phrase "Serious television to be taken seriously" trailers.

It looks interesting, so I will watch it. That being said, I am getting reaaaal tired of this needless nudity to makea show appear more adult than it actually is.

Yeah sure. The characters in both Shogun and The Last Samurai were both historically white. They were still Mighty Whitey tropes.

Actually, my real concern isn't that it'll be a Mighty Whitey trope (I actually think they will avoid that criticism by making him decidedly not mighty), but that it will be a television version of that Jason Derulo song Dirty Talk. Personally, I think orientalism and exotification are much worse cliches.

Anyway, we'll see. It's just a trailer after all. But it's mainstream media so I'm not hopeful.

I really liked that movie. I loved the irony that
none of his children were actually his
. I'll say it was overly romantic though, and that in real life, he was almost certainly the butcher he's been made out to be.

What's wrong with white people in foreign lands? What does that even mean? God, some of you. I'd hate to hear you critique Game of Thrones.

He's critiquing an overused and familiar trope, not saying that white people were never in foreign lands, nor that white people in foreign lands is a bad thing.

Kinda like how Dany freeing a bunch of slaves isn't a bad thing, but the image of a bunch of brown people praising/being saved by a white person can be problematic.

It's totally fucking absurd to complain that a show called MARCO POLO is about a white dude in a foreign land.

Now if he saves the Asian heathens from themselves and introduces them to the sophistication of Western culture, have at it. But to complain about the concept is just silly.

The series trailer has captivated me. Without Marco Polo's books the Americas would've been undiscovered and the age of exploration not happened, as well as the age of exploitation and colonization too, but thats another debate.

"All my life, I've waited for the great adventurer to offer me a place at his side." -- Marco Polo

Watch the first official trailer for the new Netflix original series MARCO POLO and discover the little-known beginnings of the legendary explorer, whose life of adventure began as a ward of the powerful 13th century Mongol emperor Kublai Khan.

Netflix just made a show set in China better than 95% of the TV show made in China. I haven't see this much production value in a TV show since the old romance of the three kingdom.
