Mario Galaxy 3 or SM3DW2?

Neither. A sequel to any one of those would be the last nail in Mario's coffin for me. I want a sense of adventure and wonder in my Mario games again. Mario 64 and Sunshine nailed tone more than any Mario game has since.

Where the modern Mario games feel more like a mismatch of cool levels, Sunshine and 64 rewarded progress with actual exploration and a central cohesive theme. It felt in some ways more "open-world" and I loved them for it.

So yeah, option D in the style of C

I really don't get the people asking for 64-2, thankfully that's not something they will do

They just want more open level design, Super Mario World and then Mario 64 had secrets and levels with multiple exits and hidden paths that in some cases lead to entirely new areas. They rewarded you for exploration

So for over a decade (If you include Sunshine) exploration was a key part of the Mario series, then Galaxy 1 and 2 were more linear, and so was 3DW, and despite all 3 being amazing games, some people long for the exploration element to return

If they absolutely had to revisit one, 64-2 would be my choice.

Overall though I like how they're willing to change it up, so I would prefer they went with something new.

D. Sunshine 2

I would like another game set in a single location that explores all aspects of it like Sunshine explored "Tropical." It had sandbars, beaches, little villages, volcanoes, deep sea, jungle, etc.
It would be interesting to see Nintendo take another setting and just explore all aspects of it, like a snow-based world that features the obligatory icy level (just to get it out of the way), high mountain, snowy plains, cold deep diving, iceberg shores, thawed area, etc. The real question, however is whether a new location would warrant changing Mario's accessory to something new that fits the area or just using FLUDD again.

I dunno, just a thought.

Something without an obnoxious number in the title would be great. 3D Mario isn't the sort of franchise that lends itself to iterative sequels.

So, something new,
but structured in a less linear fashion than recent Mario offerings
.

For some people asking what the difference between Galaxy games and 3DW is, for one, i feel it is the TIME LIMIT!

I far prefer exploring the worlds in Galaxy than to have to rush to the end because of the time limit and having to come back to the levels alter to grab all the secrets etc...

The time limit wasn't really an issue unless you were in levels where the limit was specifically made an issue (e.g., levels that start off with less than 100 seconds).

There really isn't much to explore at all in the Galaxy games. SMG1 didn't have any "side" collectibles, and Galaxy 2 had ONE comet coin per level. SM3DW, on the other hand, had three "side" collectibles in the form of Stars, and 1 more in the form of stamps (in most levels). There's more to explore in your average 3DW level than in an Galaxy level from either game. And I'm really not the greatest 3DW player ever but in most cases I could get at least 2 of the 3 stars and the stamp in my first run without worrying about the time limit, I never felt like I was being rushed through an average level.

A or C, although I'd definitely lean towards C. That style/design needs to make a comeback, especially with today's technology and refinements.

I want Super Mario Universe, a game incorporates all parts of the Mario brand; platforming, power-ups, kart racing, golf, tennis, soccer, etc.

Release DLC that creates expansions to these parts of the game and have Super Mario Universe pre-installed on all NX units.

I felt exploration was a bigger part of the Mario Galaxy games. Also, I absolutely loved the mid-air spin attack, which acted sort of like a double-jump and made controlling Mario a bliss.

So, Mario Galaxy 3, please.

Maybe so, but you still ARE being rushed whether you felt like that or not! In Galaxy, i would sometimes just look at a certain tree or waterfall and just generally enjoy the scenery for a while before moving on. I get that 3DW is simply a different take on the formula and focuses more on non stop action than exploration/taking your sweet time with a level but sometimes you're just in the mood to check out every last nook and cranny of a level and i feel 3DW doesn't let me do that at MY pace.

I had a dream that Galaxy 3 was out and I had already forgotten it existed.

Galaxy 3 Confirmed.

this. galaxy was great, but i really don't want a third with that theme. and 3dworld was good too, but i hardly even consider it a proper mario. i want a new adventure-style mario game. not a random assortment of levels. something like sunshine/64. something they look like put a decent amount of effort into.

Galaxy to me is the height of 3D mario.. I want galaxy 3,4,5 ect until they can dream up a better concept

Shame the 3ds never got a galaxy ... it's perfect for that

I think SMG2 came too quickly, probably as they recycled some assets. Shame, I haven't finished SMG2 or the final extra world in SM3DW.

Something New > Galaxy 3 > SM3DW 2

Something New

Galaxy 2 and 3D World are my two favourite 3D Marios but I think I'm good for a few years before I want to revisit them.

64 style can stay dead as far as I am concerned.

Honestly I would love a direct SM64 sequel, but new game would probably be for the best.
Galaxy has ran its course with 2 games, much like SM3 series.

I never played 3D World...so cant even take it into consideration sadly.

My vote is C or D. But definitely C...Mario 64 type game.

I'd like to get Sunshine HD first, but after that, something new.

Either Mario 64 Part 2 or 3D World Part 2. I don't want to see anything like Galaxy, because I just couldn't get into those games.

Something different.

SMB2 USA re-imagined into 3D, as already suggested.

Put Mario in a dream world again so he can do all sorts of stuff that's weird and slightly unfitting for the Mario universe.

I mean, Galaxy opened up the door to more liberal level design and enemy designs, since it's in outer space and all. Why not delve into Mario's dreams again?

Super Mario 64 2

SM64 had some of the best platforming and puzzles of any Mario game. Retain that and let's add some more enemies which was really lacking in the original. Bowser fights were great but the game could it take it up a notch with more bosses (Koopa Kids) with varying mechanics. Finally, scratch the hub world/map concept for an open world Mushroom Kingdom. Think Super Mario RPG in a full on 3D environment. I want to stumble across a Ghost House while jumping around Donut Plains. Would be so good!

Mario 64-2 for me. I love Galaxy but I want another traditional 3D platformer. I'd love for this one to have multiple playable characters like 3D World, though.

New Mario more like 64 with more action adventure elements and something that actually looks like a world Mairo, Peach and the others can live in. Gameplay has the highest priority but I also like me some atmoshpere and exploration...

D, but nothing close to the mario 64 formula, that's the worst 3D mario in my opinion. No exploration focus, giant spread out levels, or replaying levels please. Just pure platforming.

Whatever it is it will be based around a new play mechanic so it probably won't be like any of the previous games. That said, I'd like them to bring back the exploration elements of 64/Sunshine.

Something new. I'm sure Galaxy 3 and 3D World 2 would be great games, but I'd prefer something a bit fresh. We've had two Galaxy games and two "3D" games already. I'd rather a new title with new concepts (not that Galaxy 2 and SM3DW didn't shake up their predecessors).

And no 64 2 either. I'd be fine with going back to open objective based levels, but I'd definitely want a strong influence from the games that followed it. Not sure if the Mario team would even want to go back to a pure 64-like Mario.

After Captain Toad, more of that would be nice.
Galaxy seems a bit played out at this rate there's already 2 games something else is in order and it's not like they're the most interesting challenges out there.
3D W is nice but really hampered by how really boring it feels I'd say.
I mean it's content packed and all but I feel like it's really boring to play for some reason.
Closer to SM64 might be an idea then again it brings another slew of problem on its own.
More Sunshine is really the worst case scenario, it's by a huge margin the worst of the Mario games out there, it fails on pretty much on every level on everything it sets out to do.
Openworld is pointless if it's as boring as your usual AC, 3DW had the right idea in that regard although a little more coherence wouldn't be too much ask.

I find it interesting that in today's gaming scene where "open world" is such a trend to the point of even a new Zelda game is being made that way, that the most recent Mario games have been more of the "get to the flagpole" style and less of the "there is a star somewhere, go find it" style.

Not really saying one is better than the other but I would be surprised if some "open world" concepts didn't make it into the next mario console game.

Something new, but free camera like much like Galaxy, Sunshine, and 64.

free camera in Galaxy?
It was restricted most of the time and it's not like you ever needed it.
Free camera as in Sunshine is literally one of the reason why it's such a shitty game, you fight the camera most of the time!

C: Mario 64 2

Mixed with

A: Super Mario Galaxy 3

Give me the paintings and creative direction of SM64 with the mechanics and ingenuity of Galaxy and you have a contender for the greatest game of all time.

I'd like something new, though I definitely wouldn't mind a game in the mold of 3D World. That game is a very well designed platformer. Definitely my favorite 3D Mario game.
