Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

Checking in again to see where you guys in the USA are buying your RETAIL DISK COPIES. What's the general consensus for best deal/preorder bonus? I definitely want Day 1.

I pre-ordered from Dell, they have a $25 e-gift card promo on Mario Kart 8 preorders. The plan is to use the gift card on a Wii U Pro controller.

I thought about that, but with their shipping, I assume it'll arrive late :( I have a family who can't wait to play it, so it's out of the question.

Don't know if it's already been posted elsewhere, but another German MK8 review is out.

ComputerBild Spiele: Sehr Gut - 1,43 (~9.1/10)

Summary (liberal translation) at the end of the review:

Difficulty of getting started - 10/10
"No matter if young or old, Amateur or Pro Driver - anyone will easily understand the game"

Graphics/Sound Quality - 9/10
"Animations for even the smallest details, immense profits from the jump to HD. Excellent music."

Controls - 9/10
"Motion Controls are fun, Menu presets are sadly missing (no idea what they mean with this)"

Single Player - 8/10
"Starts relatively easy, the new tracks are awesome. Not as much fun long-time."

Multiplayer - 10/10
"No matter if with two or up to four players - clearly the highlight of Mario Kart 8"

How well does the game run?
"No forced installation, short loading times"

Score: 1,43 (9.1/10)

I took pics of the summary as a proof, but won't post them here due to the no-scan rule. Will happily provide them to a mod if asked for^^

If it matters, when I ordered from dell.com I was able to do next day shipping for free. My confirmation email states that the game will arrive by Tuesday, June 3.

This is going to hang on the time trial mode for me. Disappointed we've not heard too much about this, so far it sounds less feature rich than the online ghost sharing from the Wii version.

It seems pretty comprehensive. Ghost sharing is in. Plus it has a stamp for each level you only get by beating the staff ghost.

What are you talking about?

Ghost data has been an important element of Mario Kart games and this continues in Mario Kart 8 with the ability to compete against ghost racers from friends, plus the times of the top 10 worldwide racers. Beat a ghost from a member of the development team and you'll earn a Miiverse stamp.

I'm not sure when this game is actually available... eShop says midnight on 5/30, so is that midnight on 5/29 or is that Friday-into-Saturday?

And is it really available on store shelves on a Friday?
weird.

5/30 at midnight always implies the previous day leading into the listed day, so Thursday going into Friday. Midnight is technically the next day.

The second it becomes Friday, it will be available to download.

It's not that weird.

Game comes out on Friday the 30th, on the eShop at midnight on the day going from 5/29 into 5/30 and in stores.

Isn't the Friday release day thing the norm for Nintendo titles in the US lately? (from what I've read here anyway - I don't live in the US)

So who is going digital for this? if you can give explain why would be great.

I. Will most likely be playing the game far more often than any other Wii U game I own, so it makes sense to have it digital as I'd always have access to it without needing to swap discs. That, and to keep my disc drive going longer. ;)

yea I can definitely see people taking off points because of the roster. I still expect scores in the 90's though.
Pretty much, Mario Kart 7 got some knocks based on the roster and the lack of interesting tracks. I think 8 solved the track issue, so it will probably be in the 90's or at least the high 80's.

Been playing some MK7 during this wait. Man the game is much more duller than I remember!

I really hope MK8 is really good.

Yeah, MK7 is one of the most boring ones. I totally agree with Jim Sterling's 5/10 review. From what I can tell, it looks like MK8 will have better replay value.

Anyone know how good MK8 looks on the GamePad? Unfortunately this is the only way I can play it for the first few weeks till I get a telly :-/

I posted some gamepad vids somewhere in this thread. Will look for them and edit this post.

Edit:

I thought about that, but with their shipping, I assume it'll arrive late :( I have a family who can't wait to play it, so it's out of the question.

I had a $50 preorder from newegg, but I cancelled it for the same reason. With their shipping I'd get it several days after launch day most likely. I went with Best Buy and the $10 gas card. To have it day one, I don't think there's anything better out there right now.

Surprisingly, Namco is credited in the game. We don't know what was their job here tho.

That's interesting. Nintendo getting all good buddies with Namco. Wii Sports Club developed at Namco, Project X Zone co-developed with a Nintendo 1st party studio, SSB4 3DS/Wii U developed at Namco, Pokkén (lol) and now this... Watch Nintendo buy them now that their market share has shrunk and the buy-out would be allowed this time around.

Maybe not buy out since I notice Japan tends to honor and respect other companies unless they're in dire trouble. Even then I only see mergers.

But I'd love to see Link in a Soul calibur game again!

You know what I'd love to see? A Zelda Souls or a Tales game set in Hyrule!

I don't think a buyout would ever happen but I do have friends who would lose their minds for a symphonia rep in smash.

We'll have to settle for partnerships and praying that pacman isn't in smash instead.

Dat sky..its purty.

why would they?
Nintendo has done an amazing job with Mario Kart's online as opposed to Smash...

Probably to get the game done asap.

They also seem to be more skilled. Namco came up with the netcode for wii sports tennis. They had to figure out how to send information between multiple motion controls.

Voice chat is confirmed, right?

Can you use that Wii U gamepad mic feature with randoms in a lobby?

Voice chat in lobby only, with friends. You use the gamepads mic. Not sure if you can use other mics.

Nintendo shifted to Friday release dates about six months ago. Its certainly better than the Sunday release they're been pushing for years.

I would rather they do Tuesday like everyone else, but Friday is okay with me.

They were punished for making kids all over the US think about their games rather than going to church! :P

Also did Retro help develop or design any tracks other than the retro tracks?

Or was this all Nintendo Japan?

Heh.

Shame I won't be able to get this on launch day. I'm almost giving up and bringing my Wii U home, instead of leaving it on my parents house, ugh.

Edit: spoilering instead of bolding, oh god lol.

Everyone here is a game developer.

We have no idea what they did. Nintendo is stretched VERY thin trying to get games out for the U since they are practically the only ones still left making games for it. They need help to get things done. Namco could have done anything, who the hell knows. Could have some some track modeling, or character modeling, or animation stuff, or programming stuff, or lighting stuff, or texturing stuff.... or online stuff.

We know nothing.

If you pre-order the game at GameStop, you get a poster. Plenty of GameStops will also have a demo of the game available this coming weekend, May 17-18.

GameSpot article

I'm definitely going to play and pre-order the game now.

It could have also been nothing specifically for MK8, but some borrowed assets or engine work from GP DX.

Until we get an Iwata Asks, it's all conjecture.

I'm going digital, and an eventual disk for the collector's itch down the road.

I always get digital copies for WiiU retail games I'll be launching frequently.
