Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

As usual there will probably be a broken character, stat-wise. It would be hilarious if it ended up being Pink Gold Peach and within a month all high-level lobbies are filled with them.

Yep. I kinda hope there is a "best" character. It's always fun to beat someone using them.

So I've been wondering for a long time.. what exactly are the differences between all the weight classes? In the early games, it was easy because each character excelled certain things (like Yoshi had really high acceleration, Bowser top speed, etc). But when they added the ability to switch karts (which would give you those types of stats), I wasn't sure what exactly the weight of your character did besides the ability to push you around the track easier. Is there anything else? I just always choose Yoshi, so it isn't a big deal, but I am curious.

Wow, late to the news here, so battle mode is fucked with no arenas?

Here I was hoping we could finally get a complete mariokart game with great battle mode. Still excited for 8 and bought a WiiU a couple months back in anticipation but sucks that we havent gotten a great battle mode since Double Dash 10 years ago. Seems like a pretty serious mistake to me. I know what I'll type in the Club Nintendo intend to buy survey haha.

Team Yoshi here. Wario on back up.

I usually play Bowser and Wario.

But man Ludwig looks really awesome, like madman genius awesome. So I have to main him. Must be that sinister one toothed smile and that crazy hair. How can you not love Koopa Beethoven?

Or size wise like 7 lol. Metal mario and Pink Gold Peach are heavy weights with medium sized bodies so I can see both of them being very common online.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO I wish my gender-confused fave Birdo was in this game she was my main duo with Peach in Double Dash <3 Well I'll just have to rock it out double-time with Peach then ;)

There's a part where you race on the red eel from Mario 64?! I missed that before!

I actually don't like it. The eel looks like a statue, it doesn't move or blink or anything. For all of the attention they've paid to the little things, this surprises me.

I've been maining Luigi in MK Wii for a while so that's probably who I'll start with.

To be honest...I am starting to become intrigued by Baby Rosalina. I'll admit it.

I usually go Mario or my Mii lol, but I think I might try Bigmouth now! Or Morton or whatever his proper name is. :P

The babies annoy me a bit, its just out of control now. Do they really need to fill the roster with them? There are soooo many Mario characters that could be used instead. Ugh. Everything else about the game looks f**king fantastic and has me so hyped for pure fun, but I guess there always has to be something to be annoyed about.

Now that we know what is presumably the full roster, who are you going to main?

I usually roll with Bowser. But i think this time, he'll be second banana while there's Roy, Morton, Ludwig and Wendy to play.

Counting on the notion that Bowser will still see his fair share of action, if the Koopas I want to play are unlockables, however.

Seems I'll be going with Wario. I always picked him for Mario Party. Not sure what it is about him, maybe his weird color combination? Maybe his stank? Or could it be his quirky personality?

Plus, I have to rep Mount Wario, with, well, Wario.

ps. What a strange coincidence that Mario's opposite, with an upside down "M", spells out "War". It was meant to be.

Crossposting since this seems like a better thread for it:

Regarding the new Rainbow Road: "That's how I would expect a Raibow Road to look if they were going by the book."

Eh. Honestly this Rainbow Road is the least "by the book" Rainbow Road yet. By the book Rainbow Road would just be a mostly featureless rainbow track floating in space. This version really shakes things up with the space station theme.

The new Mario Kart 8 Rainbow Road is the most distinct one by far. The track layout itself doesn't look any less complex than past Rainbow Roads and is obviously more complex than Rainbow Road 64 remake. The main thing making it different is they went for a more realistic futuristic space theme rather than something more abstract. What's so off about it is that it's not by the book.

What's so off about it is that it's not by the book.

It's not doing anything drastically different in the trailer from a track design perspective, which is what I had assumed they were talking about. When you have anti-gravity as a theme, I would think there's so much you can do. I would say a lot of the other MK8 tracks look more inventive than this one one does, from a gameplay perspective

Didn't one of the developers say they were doing some drastically different things with it? If he was just talking visual design, then that's disappointing. But I'm hopeful there's more they haven't shown off yet

Andre thought the developer's comment meant visually. Since the reaction he was responding to was to how Rainbow Road 64 remake looks that only makes sense. Andre was disappointed that it looks "by the book" and was expecting something based on Mario Galaxy, which actually wouldn't be different by Mario Kart standards since they've already done that twice. They've never gone with a realistic theme before; that's very different.

I just rewatched that segment to make sure and I don't think that's the case. They said they expected something "wilder" and specifically mentioned several specific parts of the track, like the figure-8. Derrick even said it "looks brilliant, but the course design is leaving something desired." Andre does mention "visually " near the end point, but it sounded to me like the context was in reference to the track design--as in having seen it, and not having played it--and not the track theme--the entire conversation really seemed more gameplay-related than anything. I don't know, maybe it was both, but it certainly seemed like they meant more gameplay wise.

As for Mario Galaxy, I personally think they could do a lot more with that theme than they have--adding a few Star Bits here is just the start of what they could do with that theme

I'm going to go with Lemmy, Baby Rosalina, Yoshi, Shy Guy, and Bowser.

I'm having a go at Shy Guy, love him, but don't know if he will be enough awesome to dethrone Ludwig or Toad, my historical main

Yeah,Mario Kart 7's rainbow road seemed to be inspired by Mario Galaxy, already. I really like this rainbow road. The Blooper spaceship is awesome, and the spacestation theme seems neat. I want to see more of the inside of that satellite you drive around in.

Paid this game off at GameStop yesterday. This and the 2D Mario games are the only ones my wife actually enjoys playing, so this will be fun. Body is Reggie.

This is a huge leap forward for the series. One of the biggest since the jump to 3D.

As far as the gloom and doom, I think it will sell really well. I have some numbers to crunch too.

Nintendo 64: 11.89m (Super Mario 64) vs. 9.87m (Mario Kart 64)
GameCube 6.31m (Super Mario Sunshine) vs. 6.95m (Mario Kart: Double Dash)
DS: 29.43m (New Super Mario Bros.) vs. 22.87m (Mario Kart DS)
Wii: 17.28m (Super Mario Galaxy 1+2) vs. 27.35m (New Super Mario Bros. Wii) vs. 34.44m (Mario Kart Wii)
3DS: 9.40m (Super Mario 3D Land) vs. 9.43m (Mario Kart 7) vs. 7.43m (New Super Mario Bros. 2)
Wii U: 3.87m (New Super Mario Bros. U) vs. 1.97m (Super Mario 3D World) vs.??? (Mario Kart 8)
N64 Difference: -2.02m
GC Difference: +0.64m
DS Difference: -6.56m
Wii Difference: +7.09m
3DS Difference: +0.03m
Most of the Mario Karts have managed to ousell the highest selling Mario platformer by significant margins, so obviously this will do the same. Maybe 10-15 million with a corresponding bump in Wii U sales..

Ye they were really annoying. But I got to see the menus and more footage which is always great. This game looks sooooooooo good. DAMN.

Also, that's the best playthrough I have seen yet of courses like Bowser's Castle and the new Rainbow Road.

(by the way, I'm calling Dolphin Shoals as the most underrated track in a long time---not that people will dismiss it but it looks like secretly one of the best courses)

Pretty insipid commentary... but they showed a full lap of Rainbow Road so they're my bros now.

edit: Also seems to hint at a starting roster of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, Koopa, Shy Guy, Bowser, DK, Wario, Waluigi and the baby bros/princesses. Interesting.

So do reviewers have review copies now? Looking at the starting roster with question marks makes me believe that there are no secret ones.
