Does anyone know if you can do 4 player split screen without the gamepad as a control option? For example 4 pro controllers or 4 wiimote + nunchucks?

Does someone have to be the gamepad or can it just sit on the charger with the map on it?

This is gonna sound crazy, but I think I may be leaning more towards using the CC pro over the Wii U pro controller. I have both, I just like the feeling of the CC pro for Mario Kart. Who with me?!

Better stock up they aren't manufacturing those anymore. I have a CC pro and Wii U Pro and prefer the Wii U Pro. Especially with that insane battery life it has.

I think its the layout I like better on the CC pro. I agree with you on the Wii U pro, but I was playing mkwii earlier with the CC pro and it just felt so right.

gamepad is fine but I do have the superior Wii U pro so might use that
CC pro is so 00's

I'm broke so it's Gamepad, 2 Wii U Pro Controllers, and a Wheel/CC Pro for 4 player splitscreen.

Loser gets the shittier worse controls.

If I can get a Famicom controller to work, I'd use that. D-pad steering is way better.

I was thinking about buying SNES Mario kart just to play it with a dpad again.

DK's model actually looks pretty good when you're not focusing on his face.
I think he looks fine. There's a goofiness to him that I kind of appreciate.

DK is always the butt of the joke in multiplayer games for me and my friends so that tradition will continue in MK8.

man now all the best racers will be from the UK :(

good thing the UK has not sold that many WiiUs
I still got a chance to win without the guide

me and my trusty wheel are waiting man. i shall remind you I once cracked the worldwide top time for Luigi Circuit in MKWII, just sayin

lasted like a weekend, but still!

Still playing through MK7. The retro track selection is much better than MK8's retro tracks. I wish they'd use Double Dash's DK track instead of the boring 3DS one.

They already reused it in MKWii.

I also disagree about track selection, they picked a lot more thematically varied tracks in 8, and generally have a lot more changes to bring them up to spec.

Hell, all the MK64 tracks in 7 were just boring Mushroom Cup loops. Yoshi Valley almost completely one-ups the entire selection from 7.

Are there sources that the game runs at 720p?

I found an article here saying otherwise:

From Eurogamer

Can anyone explain this?

That's the only source that says it's 1080p, and it's wrong. First, logically speaking, it's nigh impossible that a game using the same engine as Nintendoland and SM3DW (and looking even better than them) are going to run at a way higher resolution than those two. But beyond that, all you have to do is look at the direct feed screenshots and you can tell it's 720p.

that is pretty damn good.

I am in awe of that mario kart direct video where the developer showed that he could keep the same line every time to show which was better kart vs bike

I don't have those skills I wish I did, but this game will make it a joy to try and get better

I'm with you bro. Sort of. My WiiU controller preference order is:

Wiimote (for d-pad controlled games needing only 2 buttons)
Classic Controller (for d-pad controlled games with more than 2 buttons)
Classic Controller Pro (for analogue controlled games)
Pro Controller
Gamepad (only if none of the above are supported)

I've been playing a ton of Super Mario Kart recently, using the Classic Controller. I think I might just stick with digital steering and use that for MK8 as well. Such a lovely controller that fits my hands perfectly.

Did you preorder the game online? I wanna know if they will send me the shirt and all the stuff straight to my home.

I was planning to preorder online as well but during a trip in some random mall there was a Gameplanet store so I decided to just go there and make the preorder, but don't worry, doing it online works just the same. They have to send the game with all the preorder gifts included!

I wasn't on time for the shirts :'(

Damn :(. Nah, don't worry I'm sure those t-shirts are not Nintendo licensed or something special anyways haha. You still can get the poster, the driving license and some kind of keychain if I remember correctly.

Saludos a ambos! Qué buena onda encontrar a Paisanos por aquí! :D

Anyone think WiiU could outsell Xbox One the month of June due to MK8? Or is that crazy / has this already been addressed?

Anything's possible, but with the lower priced SKU and E3 just around the corner it seems unlikely.

Mario Kart (or at least DS, Wii and 7) tends to be a marathon for them, not a sprint.

It was a Blue Shell t-shirt, it couldn't get better than that ;__;

¡Saludos! Veo que sí hay mexicanos por aquí :P

So a friend's letting me borrow their Mario Kart 7 copy, and I've gotta say... it's pretty great. It's really nice to play since I'll have a better understanding of how Mario Kart 8 will work, with it borrowing more elements from Mario Kart 7 than Wii. Gliding, underwater sections, outdrift mechanics, and whatnot.

I've logged an absurd amount of hours into that game and I still play it daily.

I thought 8 would make it obsolete but I'll probably still play 7 for the second screen seeing-what-your-opponents-have and where-they-are tactics.

But yeah, 8 seems to be closest to 7 except refined and possibly even more balanced.

So any more reviews, other than the Edge one, or is that it for now? I think I remember seeing something about ONM giving it 90, but it just might be my foggy memory.

I think there was a German review that praised the game, but that's all I can think of.

We might see some reviews come out early today (maybe like IGN's review of Mario 3D World), but I don't think the review embargo is lifted until tomorrow.

It would be cool if you could just have the map showing on the gamepad while it sits on the charger while 4 others use alternative control methods.

I'm thinking they're using all the power they can on the TV. They'd be pushing things too far to render a separate second screen, especially at 4P.

Yeah, one was posted in this thread:

Summary (liberal translation) at the end of the review:

Difficulty of getting started - 10/10
"No matter if young or old, Amateur or Pro Driver - anyone will easily understand the game"

Graphics/Sound Quality - 9/10
"Animations for even the smallest details, immense profits from the jump to HD. Excellent music."

Controls - 9/10
"Motion Controls are fun, Menu presets are sadly missing (no idea what they mean with this)"

Single Player - 8/10
"Starts relatively easy, the new tracks are awesome. Not as much fun long-time."

Multiplayer - 10/10
"No matter if with two or up to four players - clearly the highlight of Mario Kart 8"

How well does the game run?
"No forced installation, short loading times"

Score: 1,43 (9.1/10)

So two 9+ reviews. Off to a good start

!

Though Mario Kart is one of those series that doesn't need reviews to guarantee a purchase, at least for me.

Also, I really wish Nintendo announced Mario themed Wii U Pro Controllers to accompany the Wiimote ones. I have too many Wiimotes, what I need is another Pro controller.

Most reviews will be between 80-100 % (just my guess) :D
