Mario Kart 8 Info Thread

No. When they released the first DLC they updated also the game, the menu specifically to include the places for the new missions. Actually they updated the game too with each DLC they released.

thank you I was trying to remember since I do own Pikmin 3 but did not pay attention to the DLC

was this not also how they got NSMBU into NSLBU when Luigi came? it was basicly DLC if you downloaded it so it seems only people who do not follow WiiU very closely says these things

a lot of Nintendo software seems to get new features with updates these days the Wii U has many of them that does this so to rule DLC out because it is not on the menu makes me want to stop listening to these guys. I watch them because I think they are informed

Just hope whoever is in charge of the OT sets up a google spreadsheet or something for IDs. It will be better together!
for everyone but Graphics Horse, who will feel all of this *making all encompassing arm gesture*.

I'm going to need some help with that.
I'm totally clueless when it comes to Google Docs.. so whoever wants to take care of it please send me a PM with the links.

I don't know why I torture myself Giantbomb guys are sometimes really down on Nintendo

I have heard people say that MK8 will not get DLC because nothing in the menu screen indicates a placeholder for it.

I am just wondering how smart is this idea?

Did Pikmin 3's menu give you a hint of coming DLC?

How hard is it to revamp a damn menu screen anyways?

serious question not making fun of people who think DLC is not coming because of menu or shop

Not terribly. They did it for SARTS, though the character selection image looks a little wonky with so many characters on it. I thought they already announced DLC for this.

NSMBU had no shop menu. It grew one after an update, to download NSLU. So no, the lack of a shop button means nothing.

In fact, the GP screen with clear room for 4 more circuits, the multiplayer map screen with room for another row of maps, and the character select screen with room for another row of characters, may suggest the opposite.

Though when you choose GP the list of trophies on the bottom-right of the screen doesn't seem to have any more room, so I dunno. WE'LL SEE!

If we get DLC maybe they won't have new trophies, someone should check if the Mario Golf DLC opened new trophies.

I don't mind paying for the MK8 DLC I just think it will come and having space for it in the menu is just clear Nintendo planning. MK8 might even get that NFC treatment with updates. shoot all Nintendo software will update to use one figuirine anyway

Pro tip: Go to the Mario Kart 8 Community on your Wii U, tick "High Quality Playback" and watch some Mario Kart TV videos. Just fantastic!

just like how they just updated Miiverse to allow non-VIPs to now post youtube from the MK8 game directly.

Yup, NSMBU had no clear indication of DLC happening. When NSLU became a thing, they patched the game and installing NSLU just adds a button to the main menu.

Only 3DS games seem to need to be built with DLC in mind, but even then it's no guarantee. NSMB2 didn't have an in-game shop initially, but it was later activated through Spotpass. A little different because it's still built into the game, but they can clearly hide if it if they so desire.

Knowing how Nintendo does DLC, tracks will probably be sold by the cup (so 4 tracks) and they'll throw a bonus, maybe one arena for battle mode or something.

Nintendo will announce a few battle mode tracks "Free, and available right now on your Nintendo Wii U"

BOOK IT

I really think that will be the E3 download if nothing more. Even with Nintendo Direct they seem to always have a small software out of the blue you can download now after this Nintendo Direct

so yeah I would not bet against DLC so lightly

Knowing how Nintendo does DLC if DLC or eShop isn't mentioned in the game menu somewhere then it isn't happening.

Also the GiantBomb interview/talk seems phony.

Klepek pretending like he didn't know about the new Battle Mode.

It sounds like he asked about it to the other guy on a movie set and a really dramatic tune played before his inevitable crowd jeering announcement.

I think a spot in the game for DLC is irrelevant because prior games like Pikmin 3 and NSMBU added them after release.

I dont think Mario Kart 8 will get DLC for 2 main reasons... 1 Nintendo likes to release complete games without the need to add more content. They believe that if they charge you 60 bux it needs to come with enough content to satisfy the consumer. I understand that their policies have changed with the likes of Mario Golf / Pikmin 3 / NSMBU / Fire Emblem but none of these games were Top Tier first party titles like MK8. Has SM3DW received DLC or had an inkling of any added content? Not sure if it would be a defeat on Nintendo's part to put in battle maps as their original vision of battle mode was seen as the only main negative in the game across all reviews. It would be a huge win if they listen to everyone and release a battle pack for like 5 bux.. big revenue driver I think

My other reason is that Nintendo has no time at all to make and test more content for the game. Nintendo is in a position that they really need to buckle down and start releasing games faster ... they gotta jump from game to game to keep some momentum that DK/ MK / Smash / Bayo / and X may generate this year. Making new characters and maps for MK will eat up resources that can be used elsewhere.

I am with everyone else .. adding DLC is a HUGE win even tho it will cost us money post release. Adding battle maps and new cups is a big way to keep the buzz and the legs for MK8 going.. I am praying that DLC for MK is a e3 reveal .. if they had a stage show im sure the crowd would ERUPT if the announced "Battle Pack DLC"

Wait, so in the other thread complaining about things, people are saying there's no way to join your friends.

Can't you go into your friends list, see that they're online, and join them? If they're in a game, you just go into a spectator mode or something similar?

They complain that there's no invite system.

You could in 7, no reason you can't in 8.

Yes you can join friends, since 2008 in Mario Kart Wii. Those people are making up bullshit.

I really thought those were patched in rather than on disc out the gate?

That's not correct. They had options to go to eShop in the 1.0 version and that's a sure way of telling that a Nintendo game will get DLC or that it's NES Remix and tries to make you buy overpriced NES games in your moment of weakness :P

I'm going with Berodn, sorry Sendou

That's not true. Pikmin 3 came out of nowhere, there was nothing in the game that suggested it.

NSML was out of nowhere as well and was added into the game, there were no visible hooks.

I think they're referring to the Join Session option in the Friends menu which is on the 3DS but I don't think is on the Wii U yet. I'm not sure though as I have no one added yet and I remember people mentioning it somewhere. Can someone tell me if I'm wrong?

Yeah you guys are right about NSMBU and Pikmin 3. My brains goofed up big time. Sorry about that.

That said I still don't believe Mario Kart 8 will get DLC. It's not exactly low effort and that's exactly the kind of team that needs to be working on their next hardware early on. Also the fact is that Mario Kart 8 won't sell all that much and thus there's a smaller install base to sell DLC to.

I would imagine this team is going to work on another Wii U title, the Wii U isn't going anywhere any time soon.

DLC could be a small team dedicated to it, and this is a game that needs long legs. DLC will provide that. I'd be disappointed if they didn't do it.

Just imagine having Mario Kart 9 at the launch of new Nintendo handheld system. That would be the bomb(-omb).

Anyways if they are going to make DLC for this title then I'm buying it. I just hope they make it free since dividing online base is a bad thing in my opinion.

Thanks! I bet the ghosts are tough :-0

In Mario Kart 7 there was two developer ghosts per track. Slower ones aren't that tough but the harder is usually insane.

You work for Polygon?

My only fear is they dont release DLC for it to keep the buzz going .. I know people hated Nintendoland.. IMO if they added DLC to that game in the form of more courses for the main 3 games everyone played it would have had some legs or at least a decent line of revenue for them.

I only hope they made some additional content that they are going to add later? Like the characters in the previous version that were cut. Mario GOLF was made with DLC in mind so they had all that content already made... Like I said previously .. my only hope is that they are so close to E3 they are saving it as a surprise... If we dont see it there I doubt we will ever see it.

Totally agree about NintendoLand...always struck me as odd that more content wasn't released. Though with them pulling it from the eShop completely, it's almost like they completely abandoned the game.

Mario Golf is a strange case, that's the first time they've done anything like that. With all of the Wii U releases, the content has come down the line.

Also, keep in mind that E3 is only one show of the year. There are new announcements in the random Directs all the time.

I've got to do something about getting a Wii U first :((

I don't think they felt they under delivered with any of the the titles mention and I don't think they really have a "tier list" for their titles. Since we only get One Mario Kart per system, DLC I believe will occur. They seem to adequately price the DLC, and well they need to make as much money as they can. I don't think anyone will complain about the current content of the game. But a few battle tracks with a new (read: classic) character a la Mario Golf , seems like a no brainer for the company. If smash is any indication, they definitely hear the gamers.

I am going to meltdown

They were definitely beatable in 7.

A decent challenge though.

Apparently they're the easiest ghosts ever. Guess they just want people to have the stamps. There are 90, by the way, and the wiki has a listing.

Thanks. I have MK DS, Wii and 7 but never really got into the ghost challenges. I'm sure I could beat them, I consider myself to be really good at Mario Kart...but everyone considers themselves to be the best so I'm not sure where I actually stand in the grand scheme of things and if I can actually walk the walk race on the track instead of just talking the talk bumping into shit. Also thanks for the link!

Anyone know the eshop price here in the UK?

I don't think I've seen it mentioned anywhere so far, unless I've just missed something blatantly obvious?

Do you think it will fracture the online community tho? Adding newer characters and maps? Characters I guess they could patch the game so that everyone could see them but not have access to them unless they paid for additional characters..

If they released battle maps I feel that everyone would abandon the standard maps for the battle ones and people who dont want to pay for DLC wont be able to enjoy online battle mode at all?

If Nintendo feel like DLC would more value to the game, then they will, and Mario Kart 8 is a great game to give extra tracks/battle arenas/characters, just like Mario Golf on 3DS has done.

It's pretty easy to beat the standard ghosts in MK Wii and MK7, and those do a pretty good job of establishing you as baseline competent on the courses.

Beating the expert ghosts though, that's the tricky one.
