Mario Kart 8 : new trailer

Welp, just convinced a friend to get a Wii U by spamming these gifs/webms in a Skype chat. Shockingly, he just up and went out to buy one. Promptly added him on NN, haha.

Happy to be of service.
I do hope his decision was more informed than just clips of one game.

Don't worry, the entirety of the chat turned into a discussion about upcoming Wii U games and games that they wanted to play that have been released. He's already ordered more games to play. :P The rest of the chat... well, I'm sure they'll be getting their Wii U's around MK8's release.

Mario Kart 64 nostalgia is powerful as shit.
And I don't get it. It was my first Mario Kart and I consider 5th gen to be my favorite home console generation, but it sits at the bottom of my Mario Kart ranking. It's slippery and drifting is kind of not needed and overall it didn't introduce anything great to the series IMO. I still love it and the soundtrack is superb, but still.

But that's the second worst Mario Kart!

You know, I always hurt on the inside when I see this opinion but in all honesty? I know it's true. There are just a few little things about MK64 that add up (music, atmosphere, item handling, momentum when grazing walls versus the hard stops in Double Dash on, easier to digest items, satisfying collisions [knocking people off over gated tracks is still the best] when you have stars/shells, battle mode, blue shells weren't stupidly oppressive, vehicles didn't come with innate perks so as to make one entire type of vehicle obsolete) and make it a game that sits fairly higher up than it should in my own mind especially versus Double Dash and Wii. I still wish if they didn't do such a radical departure from the track lengths in 64 though while also leveling up on their stage hazard, unique shortcut and track dynamics (ramps, half pipes, etc) in later games.

DS & 7 were better games at launch (and better than DD and Wii which were very off putting in big ways) and given that 7 addressed all of the little issues I had with the games since Double Dash in spades, I wouldn't be surprised if Mario Kart 8 became the game that makes me move on from 64 once and for all.

A good portion of forumgoers are of the age wherein they grew up on the N64, and therefore Mario Kart 64. Nostalgia's a powerful thing.

But yeah, it's barely above Super Circuit to me. It was its 3D transition, and unlike some of the other Nintendo franchises it was a sloppy one. Music is still great, of course.

I don't like 64 very much but it's at least clearly better than SMK and Super Circuit IMO.

Also I think DS is clearly the best in the series, I pretty much like everything in that game the best out of all of them.

My personal mystery regarding Mario Kart fans is how anyone can simultaneously love or champion Super Mario Kart but not like Super Circuit. The latter is basically a love letter to that kind of game with some really catchy ass music and it also packs every one of the SMK levels into itself.

Is it because it was on a portable or something? :P

Quoting my MK ranking from other thread :P

BTW this is my Mario Kart ranking:

1- DS [Glorious game with glorious tracks and glorious gameplay, the most competitive MK game we'll ever have]
2- 7 [Rushed? It's downright the most polished game the series has seen. Perfect character and item balance, good new tracks, the best online in Mario Kart yet, looks great in 3D, I love it]
3- DD [The best home console Mario Kart. Fantastic tracks, character-specific items, double karts, I love everything about it and I still play it sometimes... wish it had online!]
4- Super Circuit [I used to think this was the worst Mario Kart, until I decided to play it recently - I love the sense of speed, the tracks, the music, the drifting, and it can get quite challenging! I'm now a believer]
5- Wii [See, there's tons of stuff I hate about this game: Thunder Cloud, POW Block, Thunder Cloud, everything looks plastic-shiny, Thunder Cloud, bikes being beyond OP rendering karts useless, Thunder Cloud, and tracks being too wide. But it was still fun and I played a LOT of Wi-Fi, so I can't say I didn't enjoy this quite a lot]
6- Super [I really love the basic-ness of the original game, with challenging gameplay and lovely music. IMO it's still a pretty solid little racer]
7-64 [This was my first Mario Kart and I love it, but I think it has the most flaws and the least high points in the series. Music is superb and has lots of great tracks, but the gameplay was a bit meh compared with the rest]

And good lard I love these neo-GIFs of Mario Kart. This hype makes me want to play some MKWii online, especially since it'll be an offline-only game in a little over a month.

Mario/Luigi/Peach Circuit had some gooood music. The MK8 remix is freaking superb.

They still haven't made a battle mode anywhere near as good and tight as MK64. The racing has improved massively in the series since, but the battle mode has gotten progressively worse. Maybe I prefer that simplicity.

Ribbon Road, Cheese Land, the Bowser Castle levels, Sky Garden, Sunset Wilds, Yoshi Desert... Damn just thinking about this for a bit has made me want to find my GBA and get a race or two in before I go to sleep.

Meh... DD has still been my favorite so far, and I prefer 7 over DS. Hopefully 8 will become my new favorite, but it'll depend on how quickly it goes from "I'm playing a new Mario Kart game" to "I'm playing Mario Kart".

I enjoyed the drifting and car handling in 64 more than DD/Wii. Didn't it introduce the drift boosts? Just felt more fun to me. I also hated the art style used for DD/Wii.

DD is pure awesome. It might not be my number one but that's by virtue of being a huge fan of 7 and especially DS. But those double karts, tracks and character-specific items, it was amazing. And the most out-of-the-box MK game yet, I don't think we'll see Nintendo experimenting with the series like that anytime soon since it's such a safe money maker these days.

Drift boosts didn't feel right IMO until Super Circuit, though. And again, I just feel like you don't even need to drift in MK64 most of the time.

You forgot the best feature: co-op! It's what tied everything together, and it was amazing. That, combined with 16-player LAN support. No MK's topped it since.

Best handling - DD

But for online, track selection (16+16), racing depth, kart customization, item selection, and balance, Mario Kart 7 is the best one in my opinion. That's why I'm excited for MK8. They seemed to learn a lot of what didn't work in MK Wii.

Double Dash only gets points for Baby Park/Wario Colosseum, the actual double kart mechanic and some of the nuttier individual items. Doubles' Karts legitimately should have been in every Mario Kart afterwards as an optional mode though.

Beyond that though? The game is really ugly looking with plastic like blocky models, the music took a nosedive, tracks started to get more and more compact, the handling felt off somehow, introduction of losing items on hit/falling off a course, introduction of the stupidly overpowered Winged Blue Shell, driving off road felt like you were trying to haul a load of fabric across a field of sandpaper, minor grazes against the boundary walls or gates in the game would halt your momentum completely, and you absolutely couldn't pause unless you were Player 1.

As I said before, Double Dash > every other MK game imo.

I agree that the doubles kart should be an option in every game. It adds SO much to the gameplay. Its different and so much fun...

Fixed and Agreed.

DS definitely had tighter controls. DD had a more bouncy, just-barely-in-control feel. I loved those physics. It was very arcadey, but that made racing downhill on tracks like DK Mountain more of a rush than similar moments in other games. The game also really penalized you if you went off course, which made it even more important to keep control of the bouncy karts.

The next step in MK side stuff might be some kind of "build-a-kart" thing like Lego Racers 64 had. It wouldn't be good enough to distract from the main karts, but would still be really cool.

And you could share them online with other people. And people could download your designs. And stats would be determined by size/pieces used. And you could collect these pieces by challenges or something. And...

well, maybe for the next MK.

DAT AIRPLANE.
The airport looks so beautiful. Nintendo has to make a new Star Fox game now. ;_;

No argument on the first part since that's pretty subjective (I love wiggling the analog to speed up the boost in 64 but I can see how others would find it annoying).

I'm no competitive karter but how on earth did you win any races without drifting? Getting those boosts seemed to be the key to success.

See, Double Dash was the first one I really got into (I rented SMK way back in the day and had 64 but never really got into either much and never really had friends to play with until DD), so a lot of these things you listed here are things I'm too used to for them to be negatives. The compact track design, the overpowered blue shell, and the way off-road handles have always just felt like parts of the game to me. Ultimately everything pre-Double Dash just feels weird to me in its handling (64 less so).

My preference is:
DS>7>Wii>Double Dash>64>SC>SMK

But 7, Wii, and Double Dash are pretty much interchangeable. I like Double Dash a lot but the lack of Retro Courses and Online that the games from DS and on had bring it down for me. Wii has a lot of issues as well especially in terms of item balance, but the online is superb and I like the track selection honestly. I know in my heart 7 is better than Wii and Double Dash but I never really got into it, I dunno the tracks just didn't really hook me and I hardly played online at all. I always keep wanting to go back to it but then I remember I have a huge backlog.

But DS is clearly the best, as I said earlier. Best engine, best featureset, best course list, just the best in everything. It's the only game in the series I'd say even comes close to being one of my favorite games period.

I don't think the music was as good as is being suggested. And the course design was almost inspired TOO much by Super Mario Kart, it didn't even remotely come close to being its own thing.
It sorta felt like it was trying to emulate Mario Kart SO MUCH that it felt... inauthentic. Later handheld versions got it right, but SS felt like it missed the mark.

Agreed with all this. I didn't like the controls much either, and the reused 64 sprites felt cheap and weren't nearly as charming as the original game.

Aaaaargh!!! I wish I could embed these new fangled files onto my mobile browser!!! I'm using Chrome but for some reason I can't click Save on the plugin screen. Might have to see if the Beta works better.

Has Maple Tree way been confirmed for 8? THat track is GOAT.

I so agree with this. Maple Treeway + online + Wheel in MKWII = ridiculous amount of hours spent raging at the screen / dancing with joy

man, MKWII had some really amazing tracks now that I think of it

As much as I think the Wii U is a terrible system, when Nintendo says they're delivering 60 fps, they'll be delivering it damn well. Looks fluid as fuck.

Their EAD teams really put out some great stuff, technically. If they went 3rd party
and I really, really don't mean this in a mean or trollish way, I'm hoping so hard that this will happen even though chances are practically zero
their games would certainly be amongst the best when it comes to graphics.

I think you should challenge your belief it's a terrible system. Maybe then you wouldn't have to Nintendo beg.

You are probably using either Safari (iOS, Mac or PC) or Internet Explorer. Please move to Firefox, Chrome/Chromium or Opera to see content.

Late but, plz see my previous posts I'm using Firefox. Also I had to stop the extension cause the WebMs were buzzing my CPU. :/

Sounds like there's no voicechat at all in the game, which is frustrating. I can understand Nintendo not wanting to offer it in random matches given they're quite safety-conscious about their young audience, but it'd be great to have in matches against friends where the back-and-forth is part of the fun.
