Mario Kart 8 : new trailer

I love the use of an airport as a track - the art historian in me wants to say its a comment on globalisation and the familiarity of airports to many more people than when the series first debuted...

Sounds like there's no voicechat at all in the game, which is frustrating. I can understand Nintendo not wanting to offer it in random matches given they're quite safety-conscious about their young audience, but it'd be great to have in matches against friends where the back-and-forth is part of the fun.

*sigh*

I'm not surprised in the slightest, but this is one of the things that really kills my hype for this game. I don't care about talking to randoms at all, but not being able to talk to my friends is such a huge oversight it's ridiculous. The damn console has a mic and a video application built into it, I should at least be able to talk to my friends during the game.

I only have a shitty Dell laptop that I use for homework, it has no mic, so Skype is impossible for me. My best bet would be to set up a phone call, which is low quality and just such an unnecessary annoyance... damn it Nintendo.

Their online policies are costing them sales, whether they realize it or not. If they would have implemented proper online onto their past Wii U games I can guarantee a lot of my friends would have played 3D World and Donkey Kong with me online, meaning they'd have to have bought their own copies. Instead, we split the cost and just took turns with each one of them, played a few hours of co-op when I got to see them, and that was it.

It's ridiculous that they don't have such a basic feature set up universally for this system, let alone on their largest online game ever. Biggest failing of the Wii U, by far, and it has stopped me from buying some of their software because of it. So frustrating.

Another reason why the gamepad is useless. The second Nintendo launches an SKU with a pro controller for cheaper and updates the OS so it can be fully navigated with the Pro Controller, there will be a Wii U at my doorstep.

The Gamepad is awesome. There may never be a SKU without it.

That said, I don't understand the lack of voice chat when the Gamepad has a microphone that I thought was specifically for this sort of feature. The system has Wii U Chat as well.

I really hope MK8 at least has some other form of communication. Instant messenger perhaps? Please no more of the garbage we saw in MK Wii.

A shame their sunshine airport gameplay couldn't reveal the final Nitro and retro track. The flight display is so conveniently clear.

Woah, that violin near the last lap on the Sunshine Airport footage... That and the first place beat continuing to be a thing is going to make whoring the OST a wonderful experience.

And yeah, it's a bit of a shame we couldn't get Waluigi Pinball in Mario Kart 8. Just imagine the music.

Now that I think about it... Sunshine Airport's music is really reminding me of one of the songs from Sonic Unleashed. Seriously, is Sega partially composing this game's music or something? It's good.

Sorry if answered in here already, but...

Is it possible to do 2-player online/GP, with one player using the GamePad and another playing on the TV, so that we don't have to split the TV up into two sections?

Soo never then? Because Nintendo isn't dropping the gamepad and to be honest I don't want them to either since I like my off screen play.

If you think the GamePad is useless then you couldn't have played ZombiU, Batman Arkham City, Lego City Undercover, Rayman Legends, Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, Deus Ex, Splinter Cell Blacklist or any of the games featuring Off-TV Play when your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend/kids want to watch the telly.

I sometimes wonder how I managed without it before tbh.

The current build didnt allow it. but that could change.

The change in drifting in MK Wii was for the absolute best.

Snaking isn't a natural skill. It's a robotic one. I don't need to face a bunch of robots online, thanks. Pretty much killed MKDS for me.

If you want to be good at MK you can find other ways to improve, not use a trick that throws the entire balance of the game off.

Nintendo is obviously trying to make Mario Kart a balanced experience and I applaud them. They nerfed bikes and improved recovery time from items, for example.
Wii sucked at this, because bikes were absurdly OP, and unlike snaking it takes no skill to pick a uber fast bike with inward drifting and spam wheelies. There's nothing robotic about snaking, also, and you had to be very good to pull it off non-stop in every track. It was awesome, but I can see why it was removed. Oddly enough, I feel like drifting (if it really can't be like in DS - and it won't) is perfect in Sonic Racing Transformed. Three tiers of boost depending on how long you drift, and you can jump mid-drift in the opposite direction without losing your charge.

I really like what I'm seeing, except the underwater stuff.
I just don't get it.

Racing on the surface is fun and the occasional dunk is fine. But what's fun about driving slower? My biggest gripe about MK7.

I agree. Even though I have a smartphone with me at all times, I don't want to have to jump through extra hoops to get on Skype or another chat program. Just give me voice chat in the game. It's like we have to drag Nintendo into the future for every little thing. Before, it was friend codes versus names. Now it's voice chat.

You're not driving slower. You go just as fast underwater. Your turns are just wider, and when you go off jumps underwater (I.E. road bumps, etc.) you fly farther and take longer to reach the ground since you're floating.

Wild guess time:

The three remaining new tracks are Rainbow Road, Bowser's Castle and Tropical Freeze... and for the next trailer, they'll show the Tropical Freeze course, and reveal Diddy, Dixie, Cranky and/or Funky. The second half of the trailer will be the new Bowser's Castle, wherein they'll reveal Bowser Jr., Birdo, Dry Bones and Dry Bowser. They'll also show bits of N64 Yoshi Valley and GCN Sherbet Land, and the "Speaker" and "8" items will be detailed.

If racing slower isn't fun, why would you even play Mario Kart to begin with and not F-Zero or something.

Considering the kind of stuff that come out of my mouth during the average session of MK7 I think that it may be for the best that there's no voice chat, at least in the interest of preserving friendships :{
Here's what I say whenever I do an MK7 Skype session:

"Hi guys!"
"Shit."
"I hate this game."
"Shiiiiiit."
"Fuck you guys."
"I hate this game."
"SUCK MY DICK."
"I hate this game."
"ANOTHER FUCKING BLUE SHELL?"
"Damn I'm so bad at this."
"I hate this game."
"Fuck bloopers they are so fucking broken oh my fucking god."
"...That was dumb."
"I quit."
"I really do hate this game."
"Well that was fun. See you guys next week!"

sooo.... will Nintendo push a Demo of this onto our WiiUs after the Direct tomorrow?

I know that demos are more or less dead. even more so for Nintendo.
But I feel Mario Kart 8 is make or break for the WiiU, and they did this for Wii Sports and Wii Fit. And I would say Mario Kart is at least of the same league.

That's extremely sanitized compared to what my sessions sound like. To give some perspective a dark portal wreathed in fire began to open over my den during our races last Thursday >:(

Mario Kart is like board games, it just isn't as fun when everyone is shouting obscenities and cursing each other :D

So spinning out in antigrav mode gives a boost, we know that. But can anyone tell if the act of spinning out actually slows you down during the spin at all, counteracting a bit of the boost you get afterwards? Will you be AIMING to hit things, because there's no downside, or does the boost just cancel out the spinout slowdown?
