Mario Kart restricts online chat to FRIEND only lobbies.

Yes, just and you and your friends. No one else, which means you and your friends are only going to be playing against each other and bots. Which sucks and hasn't been a problem with any other online game since...pre Xbox 1.

You and your friends wanna take on the world together? Too bad, you can't.

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure Mario Kart Wii added randoms to your party.

The 3DS does not do GPS location. You are talking rubbish.

But yes, it is easier for Nintendo to completely remove talking to strangers. It's not exactly a debatable thing either, now there is ZERO chance of a child talking to a sex pest. Job done, safe online.

I'm not familiar with how Animal Crossing location tracking works obviously, but I assume it pulls a location from the IP associated with whatever AP the 3ds is connected to at the time. And you knew thats what I meant by "GPS".

Also to your second point, bullshit. Go look at @BadMiiversePost once in a while for a little taste of what people are up to on the console already.

Again, this should be a parental controlled thing, and not a playerbase wide punishment because it is easier than doing the work involved or counting on parents to...actually be parents.

That's a particular game and not the platform or company/division as a whole. Now that is a game that should be on the Wii U or just Nintendo platforms and Nintendo is stupid (and I will continue to feel this way) for not going after it since it fits their image greatly but that's a separate topic. Just because Minecraft exist on those systems does not make those system defacto family or kid friendly systems and mean they'll be treated as such by the general public, parents, etc.

Except that they already are when it comes to the Console market.

All my consoles are set to friends list only.

And that's all Nintendo needs so "all-chat" is fixed.

But noooooo we can't have people actually parenting! We gotta do that parenting for you! *kids meanwhile continue to play CoD instead of Mario Kart*

Animal Crossing DOES NOT give out a location AT ALL. I don't know where you dug this up from.

Serious question, does Minecraft have a worldwide matchmaking service? Can I hit "random game" and be with a stranger?
I think it's friends and friends of friends only (although this gets pretty random.) , but it's also a console with a built-in Web browser to find strangers to be friends with.

A game designed for children on the most expensive Nintendo console ever produced. Something doesn't fit.

What a travesty the whole Wii-U situation has been. WAY too expensive if children are the primary audience for the console. Then making their major franchises which adults still enjoy totally kid driven when parents simply are not buying the console and young kids could give a rat's ass about the franchises from the late 80's/early 90's.

The more years that go by without Nintendo console relevance reduces the relevance of their franchises on children's mindshare.

ffs some people.

Nintendo absolutely should allow us the choice.

This should not be defended in any way.

I think this is the point that people are missing or are self justifying with remarks such as "I don't chat with people anyway" or "good I don't have to hear some little kid." That's your opinion of the feature but for the others that would like to have voice chat and communicate to friends etc does that mean we are wrong? NO! The function should be there with a choice to turn on/off.

I got it from you:

I probably should have done a Google search, just assumed thats what you meant.

That's why the report was so insane. The media was having a field day reporting how Animal Crossing allowed people to find kids (even showing a child talking to Tortimer and saying "This might even be a pedophile in California!"). Absolutely hilarious.

I don't normally 'this' things, but...this.

And this is relevant to this thread because?

THIS. 100% THIS.

Kids today don't give a damn about Nintendo, and its because of their boneheaded decisions starting with the original Wii.

I spent last Christmas in a room full of kids playing Minecraft, Clash of Clans, and talking about CoD Ghosts. My Father's gf's 13 yr old has a Wii U and I asked if he had 3D World, his response was something to the effect of "Nobody plays Mario games anymore".

I had to sit there and let him show me Disney Infinity and ACIII. It was a sobering experience, to say the least.

I wish more games did this. I hated waiting for a game to start in the COD games because everyone just says stupid shit and I end up muting them. Why do you need to talk to strangers?

none of this seems odd to me except for the lack of invites. at minimum they should have invites within the game (I know Wii U doesn't support OS invites). My guess is this is largely a result of NNID not really being tightly integrated into the Wii U OS.

not ideal (the invites thing).

as for chat... friend lobby only chat is fine. no chat during the race doesn't affect me at all (99 times out of 100 friend chat during competitive games is minimal and mostly reactions)

as others have said.. it's a kid-friendly game. none of this should come as a surprise. none of it actually makes the game any less fun.

For what it's worth, Assassin's Creed IV has invites to mulitplayer. I honestly don't know what they did to get this working though, it may have been an absolute pain.

Another thread where I wanted to quote so much....

My guess is someone has to create a friends only lobby and then the others will be able to search for it. Someone will have to be the designated lobby master because it sounds painful (without using other means) if your friends all start thinking they are to create the lobby.

Though, the invites thing is dumb.

But I won't get a message notification? lol

Forget chat....focus on the invite system.... and message notification. And some ppl wonder why there are complaints about Nintendo's online service...Seriously its not ppl complaining just to complain. This is ....sad.

Other online setups have ways to set it up like this for chat...and not be so tied down.

The notion is that people seek out their friends when they want to play, rather than friends trying to get those people to play. It's a slightly more casual approach to the whole thing.

I got kinda dizzy reading this...lol.Also...is this a brain teaser?

... Nintendo's online offerings aren't very robust. What did you expect?

I laughed so hard at this....I missed him on the show...

The standard Wii U is the same price as the Wii during its launch in most areas, and people ate that up. The difference was that Wii Sports was a killer app back then.

I applaud Nintendo for making this decision. People seem to forget that there are kids playing this game and that bullying happens more often than people realise.

Default chat off. User agency.

It's simple.

Nintendo truly rubbed me the wrong way with their descision to turn Swapnote completely off. I lost respect for the way the company is run that day, it shows an antiquated mindset.

Options Nintendo.

I don't. What's your point? That I don't understand the stress and possible risks of letting your child interact with strangers online? Like I said, implement parental controls and allow players to mute one another. Make it so they can't talk or hear other players. That includes messages and friend requests too. Other games and systems do this with no issue. Doing that would ensure that everyone wins and gets what they want.

My point is that you only think about what you as a grown person wants out of a kid-friendly game, and not what a parent would want the chat/party system to be. You don't give a shit about exposing kids to bullying/racism/sexism/stalking/etc., because you, as an adult, want to swear at strangers. You aren't the target audience and don't have the frame of mind to decide what's good for kids, only what's good for you. There are plenty of games on the market that already cater to what you're asking for, but fuck Nintendo because they're trying to make the kid friendly version. Think about more than your own situation.

You can't default to a free-for-all chat situation in a kid-friendly game. If you want to swear at adults, then add them to your friend list and be done with it. You're making something out of nothing.

If this your real issue, what your kids are exposed to during online play, you should just disconnect the WiiU from the internet wholesale. And god help you when they get to the unfiltered internet.

Fine by me, I never understood the issue. Why exactly is is that important to voice chat with strangers when you're about to race? All you need is a few generic responses and that's it.

So now instead of just not letting them talk to random strangers, they can't play online at all?

http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/05/15/mario-kart-8-review

I understand there are people who actually praise the decision and dislike online communities but aren't these practices a bit archaic? This is going to be the lowest selling M8 because of the install base, and now they discouraged the online community. It all just seems counter productive. This is a game you're going to be playing until the new one comes out on the next system. You have to allow the community to grow and actually communicate, not leave it in silence.

Was it really difficult for nintendo to leave a universal online chat function that has to be turned on for the players that actually want to be social?

I have made a few PSN buddies after some games of NBA 2K13. One was someone who kept spamming a move I couldnt stop...another was one where we had some classic battles won by both. That couldnt have happened with the invite, chat setup Mario Kart 8 has. It was nice saying Good Game in the final seconds during or right after the game..and that was typed. I had to tell one right after the game I was getting tired and was going to bed. I dont know if I even could this way or have to wait til we got back to the lobby with Mario Kart 8.

My wish for Nintendo is to embrace online more....just deal with the lumps and embrace it. If they can deal with pitiful sales of the Wii U...I'm pretty sure they can deal with some negative press about online if they open it up more.

I mean, if we're really "thinking of the children" here, god forbid someone's kid see's a dick on Miiverse before Nintendo's filter can get to it and their minds are poisoned, or two stamps of Mario and Peach positioned in a provocative way that could be thought of as unwholesome.

Someone earlier had a good point; we should have the option to opt in to online chat. Turn it off by default and make it so you have to go into options to activate it. The childers don't get their pure minds violated, and friends who want to talk with friends during the race get to. Stripping it out entirely makes so little sense.

No way to invite is stupid, but certainly don't mind not hearing strangers yelling racial and homophobic slurs at me. Actual friends are the only ones I'd want to voice chat with anyways.

Maybe getting to talk to friends during the race will get patched in later on. That way, if you like playing with someone, add them as a friend and enjoy talking to them.
