Mario Kart Switch?: King Boo make his returns.

All tracks of the original + all DLC cups + four original cups and I'll consider it. Add a real battle mode and a new season of DLC tracks to it and I'm definitely in.

I'd be very happy with an enhanced port of Mario Kart 8 with all the DLC on a Switch cart. Add in a few King Boo level characters and a proper Block Fort battle mode and my money is theirs.

Then it's not just a remastered edition, it's a new game with 12 Retro Cups :P
I'd say DLC packed in + 2 extra cups would be okay, haha.

Honestly, I'd prefer they just keep building on MK8 going forward. It's perfect, and it'd suck to start over and lose out on any of the tracks from MK8.

You're basically asking for a brand new game. This is obviously not the case.

I only care about battle mode in Mario Kart, so I've been disappointed with every one since MK64. Before MK8 proved beyond a doubt how much of an afterthought it had become, battle mode had become increasingly watered-down with each iteration (mainly because of the removal of defensive strategies and precision). But I'm always hopeful and ready to be won back, so here's a few things I'm hoping for:

- Quick, precise, nimble car mechanics - especially from a complete stop (MK64-style quick donuts, speed boosts, & quick reverse). Some of the best battle moments were those close-range, precise, high-stakes fights right after someone got hit and lost all their speed.

- Fast, precise, mk64-style red shells that always go straight to the nearest target (preferably after traveling straight forward for a set distance as in MK64)

- Thoughtful battle-specific levels, including all the ones from SMK & MK64. No big stupid empty squares with a gamecube texture mapped on.

- Ability to hold most items behind the kart for defense (and maybe even the ability to rotate them around to protect against head-on & side attacks)

- No temporary invincibility after getting hit

- No automatically losing your items when you get hit. You should only lose them if you use them or if someone directly destroys them with an attack.

- the ability to hop over an incoming shell as a last-ditch defense strategy (only successful if it's perfectly timed).

- specific or even customizable weapon sets

I think this is, if anything just an enhanced port, as many others have said. At the same time though it could be nothing, it may just Nintendo using Mario Kart as an example of split screen gaming on the go, and there is no actual game here (yet).

Dunno how to feel.

On one hand, MK8 is fucking amazing, best game in the series, taking that and building on it even more isn't a bad thing. Especially if they add characters I actually want like Diddy Kong, Birdo and Bowser Jr, and if they have a sizable amount of new tracks, maybe even a proper battle mode and other new features.

On the other hand I still want a fully ground up brand new Mario Kart that I haven't seen or played before. Granted maybe there's enough new content in this port that makes it basically a new Mario Kart on top of everything in 8, but even so...

Not really upset at this, just wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe Switch will be the first system with two Mario Karts, releasing 8+ at or near launch and 9 a few years down the line.

I'm betting on this being an actual game in development; otherwise, why would they go to the trouble of showing both a character and an item system not present in MK8?

Yeah, this looks more like a pitch than it does an actual game.

I like how some people in this thread and probably other threads are like, "man i wish they made Mario Kart 9 or Splatoon 2".

Youre out of your mind if you think theyre gonna abandon Smash 4, Splatoon and MK8 to make completely new games. These are evergreen titles that they can expand upon with DLC.

Mario Kart 9 and Splatoon 2 would be evergreen titles that they can expand upon with DLC with the bonus of attracting all those who already bought MK8 and Splatoon.

Also I like the assumption they're not MK9 and Splatoon 2 based on seconds of footage.

I want to bet that this Mario Kart will include two person karts, it makes too much sense for a system called switch.

I personally hate Red Shells in battle-mode. Even though it is possible to play around them using itens or walls as defense, I think they detract the aim skill of other itens. Hitting a Banana, Green Shell or Bob-Omb if much more rewarding and interesting.

Agree with your other statements though. Mario Kart DS also had an amazing battle mode due to the game mechanics.

This is a major disappointment for me if this turns out to be the main Mario Kart for Switch rather than just a launch port + extras to hold us over. Same goes for Smash Bros. once we see that.

Don't you think that may be because of the lack of defensive options in the more recent games? In MK64, red shells were usually irrelevant because of how many ways you could defend against them. You had to really earn a red shell hit by chipping away their defenses and striking before they could regain a new defense.

In basically all the games since (except DS, as you mentioned), you can barely defend against them, which was then balanced by making the red shells slower, dumber, and basically less effective overall. This typifies what I've hated about all the MK's since 64; they're slower, more dumbed-down, and more random, all of which supposedly makes it "more accessible".

I'd love to see it go back to a system that is still accessible while rewarding deeper levels of skill and strategy (like MK64) rather than punish and discourage them in favor of more random mayhem (like almost every one since).

Man, I don't get why Nintendo keeps persisting with that ugly King Boo design. The one used in the Luigi's Mansion games is much cooler.

Mario Kart 8 still looks great and I'll happily purchase this enhanced version.

It still amazes me that MK8 ended up being the big graphical showcase for Wii U after the abysmal Mario Kart Wii, which was one of the most underwhelming first party Nintendo console games I've ever played from a visual standpoint.

Just talking to a friend about this. If Mario Kart 8 may be an enhanced port that adds new gameplay features (if as optional modes or whatever), maybe we'll get a Smash 4 port that has more than just extra characters. Is that reasonable?

Sakurai said he designed Smash Run around the handheld capabilities of the 3DS which seems the selling point of the NX, so I'd love to see him bring it back for the Switch version and build on it like letting us interact with each other in the map (like in Air Ride), adding some more enemies from the third party franchises that lack them like Final Fantasy, etc. It'd be hell of a lot better than Smash Tour.

I agree with you. I also really like your suggestion of the Hop as a dodge mechanic; would be amazing if Nintendo implemented something similar. I haven't played much of Battle Modes in recent Mario Kart games, but is it still possible to steal balloons using mushrooms? This was probably one of my favourite features.

Yeah, this is a common trap many developers fall into (Smash for example). They believe deep is the opposite of accessible, or that having a high skill ceiling impedes people to enjoy the game. They sometimes also try to add random / non-controllable factors to even the playing field. I hate this kind of philosophy. Fortunately there are games that counter this notion (Splatoon) so itoday it's not as present.

Smash Run was my favourite addition in Smash 4, so I'd love that. I think it desperately needs more stages though, moreso than than new enemies.

With a name like Mario Kart Switch, it's just begging to be like Double Dash.

Missed opportunity there Nintendo.

Hmm... Hopefully it has at least some new tracks. That would make it easier for me to justify buying the game a second time.

Being able to carry two items at a time is interesting, though... I wonder how that will affect the "item balance".

Mario Kart Switch? It has two weapon slots, and to switch you need two characters, double characters dashing on a course! MARIO KART DOUBLE DASH 2 CONFIRMED!
