Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story

When games have a high-concept premise, it sets the stage for horrible jokes and puzzles. We're talking anatomy puns, contents-of-stomach gags, and flood/drain fluid puzzles.

I can't say anything about the jokes, but there are some flood/drain fluid puzzles in the game. They're quite simple though. Getting out of Bowser does not involve any low brow humor. It's just... mind-blowing. I can't say with without spoiling it.

Sept 15th huh? Nice, but I still hate the name. They should have called it "Mario & Luigi: Vore Of The Worlds"! :D

this game is going to be amazing

one of the games I'm looking forward to most this year, that's for sure

Better?! Okay, who are AlphaDream, exactly? I fooled around with Tomato Adventure a bit (and enjoyed it), but I'm guessing Square-Enix didn't train them for the specifics of these type of games. Did they come out of nowhere?

And, so I know how to take this, how would you guys rank the Mario RPGs (including Super Paper Mario and Super Mario RPG)?
AlphaDream also made the two fantastic Hamtaro Adventure games for the GBA (Though only 1 came out in NA)

Ham-tar-o!
If we work together it's much better
my best frieeend
Little hamsters, big adventures!
:D

Any reason besides Nintendo scheduling that they're making the localization of this game take so long?

AlphaDream is made up of ex-Square people who worked on Super Mario RPG.

Awesome. I wasn't worried about lowbrow humor so much as tittering about not making pee-pee jokes. Cheekiness = bad.

I could have sworn I remember EGM giving 1 a good score, but Gamerankings doesn't have it. Hm, neat. Also, apparently, Pax Softnica made 1. The more you know.

Yeah, the name isn't the best. But I don't care as long as it's fun. Which it sounds like it is.

I've said many times before that I think the people who shovel so much hate at Partners in Time are way off base (it has some drawbacks in comparison to Superstar Saga, but also improves upon it in other areas; endless bitching about the babies aside, the games aren't that far off in overall quality). Still, I can't help but be a bit excited with all the praise the third game's getting. I'm really looking forward to it, though September is a ridiculously long turnaround time for localization.

I'm really pleased with the addition of Bowser, too, since Mario and Luigi being the only two playable characters has always been the biggest drawback of these games for me versus the other Mario RPGs. I still think they're very high quality, but I liked the diversity of the casts in the other games, so this is at least a little step in the right direction on that point.

There were plenty of great games last year. Such as...

There were Layton, Ace Attorney: Trials and Tribulations and FE last year (+ more in the first half)!

Yeah. Aside from Professor Layton. I put tons of time into Final Fantasy IVr, Order of Ecclesia, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, The World Ends With You, and Etrian Odyssey 2. And I remember lots of people enjoying Kirby, Soul Bubbles, Space Invaders Extreme, Bangai-O, and Advance Wars: Days of Ruin, amongst others. Definitely wasn't a bad year for me.

Yeah. Specifically, both of the co-directors of Super Mario RPG work at AlphaDream on the Mario & Luigi games. I guess they enjoyed the experience of working on that particular material. Which is fine, they're good at it.

I never hated PiT, just didn't compare to SS for me. The babies were manageable (although annoying). The main reason I didn't like PiT was the no overworld. You just ended up going to stages with the hub being at the castle.

I think its an awesome game. I'm still convinced Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga is the best one between all the Mario RPGs, and its one of the best RPGs ever, but thats me, Paper Mario: TTYD is also really awesome. I'm ranking this one between M&L:SSS and PM2, which means is one of the best and funniest JRPG I ever played. Even if you cant tell what the fuck is going on you WILL have fun.

Crazy game indeed, I'm dying to play this in english

other then Layton at the start of the year, none of those came out last year. FE was this year and AA was 2007. Shame for forgetting TWEWY and AW

You could easily beat both in a week max.

That's the sad thing. These games are great, but they don't last that long...

However, M&L3 ups the ante by
providing tougher versions of the regular bosses for you to "re-fight" in the arena that's in Bowser's belly.

That lil tidbit alone kept me going for a few more days. :D

Really, the DS has some dry months every year and Q4 2008 was pretty lackluster aside from OoE, but the DS hardly had a bad 2008.

I think he just got Apollo Justice(Feb 08) and Trials and Tribulations mixed up.

Or that!

I'm finally ready for this game. I finally got around to beating Paper Mario 64 so now I have completed:

Paper Mario 64
Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door
Super Paper Mario
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time

So I've beaten all the mario RPG games now I believe.

Yep same here. I rather enjoyed all of them except Super Paper Mario.

Can't wait for this! I can't believe both this and Layton are coming out with in weeks of each other. It's a good time (as always I guess) to be a DS gamer.

So true! :) Plus, for me at least, Idolmaster comes out a couple of days after this and Kingdom Hearts a few weeks later! September is DS month for me :D

yeah, it's going to be awesome.

I haven't touched my DS since earlier this year where I got addicted to Rhythm Heaven and Henry Hatsworth

I'll finally get another DS game! I bought Partners in Time when I got the DS Lite (already had the first one for the GBA) and I've never bought/played a DS game since. Funny that it's taken me so long to get another game that it's the damn sequel to the one I have. One of these days I'll have to ask on here what I've been missing in the DS world. Actually, I have played New Super Mario Bros. and Mario Kart DS on a friends DS so I can check those off too.

I popped the import back in to play it some more now that my hype factor is at an all time high. This game is flippin' awesome

thank you jesus for kittens and puppies and pizza and mario & luigi games

Don't be one of those people. We have a thousand DS recommendation threads, and a search function to find them.

That was more of a rhetorical musing, I doubt I'll have time to go grab a bunch of these games. It takes something of Mario RPG caliber for me to play a portable game. Although I am very excited that they are FINALLY making a sequel to Golden Sun and I'll be sure to pick that up.

Superstar Saga is one of the best RPGs I've ever played. PIT falls a bit short compared to it, but still highly enjoyable although not as refined as the first. BUY EM

Thanks. Looks like I'll start with the GBA game (cheaper).

Edit: Aha!

I pretty much hated Partners in Time, but I probably would have been more lenient if I the first game had not been one of my favorite games ever.

The few improvements are outnumbered by the the needlessly complex combat and the extremely linear gameplay. I'm no fan of the baby Mario series characters (other than in Yoshi's Island), but the slapstick with the babies makes me cringe, and most of the rest of the humor comes from making fun of and/or injuring Luigi. The dungeons are not nearly as fun or creative as those in the first game, and I really just found the game lacking in fun and humor (with the exception of the awesome secret cameo from the first game).

Now that I can stomach Mario again, are the past Mario RPGs (portable or otherwise) worth looking into?

Paper Mario 2 > Paper Mario = Superstar Saga > Partners in Time > Super Mario RPG

All are worth playing, really.

If you have a Wii, download Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Don't think, just do! Still one of my all time favorites and I used to hook up the SNES every year to play it again until they came out with it on the Wii's virtual console finally. Most of the others are great too but this will always be the best by far, for me. Mario and Luigi SS for the GBA is fantastic and one of the funniest games I've played. I enjoyed PiT but some here didn't. Paper Mario and Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door are both really fun too. I was actually surprised at how dark Thousand Year Door's story was at the very end haha Can't freakin wait for Bowsers Inside Story!
