Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam Bros. Reviews

Sounds like it's exactly what I expected it to be. Which is good. The story was never great, but as long as the combat is fun and the writing funny, I'll enjoy it for sure.

As someone who found Dream Team absolutely soul crushing, there is no way I'm touching this game with a barge pole

Reviews seem lower (could be my imagination) than BIS and DT.

Lower than BIS (which was a damn great game so not much surprise there), but on par with DT so far. Still a bit early to say for sure since NA reviewers haven't gotten their hands on it yet, but I wouldn't expect it to deviate.

Despite reviews saying it's better and fixed a lot of the issues DT had?

It would take a hell of a game to match BIS. BIS is the Thousand Year Door of the Mario and Luigi series, and just one of Nintendo's best RPGs in general.

So of all 3DS Mario RPG games

- Paper Mario Sticker Star
- Dream Team
- Paper Jam (based on reviews)

Are any/all worth buying?

Sticker Star is one of the most disappointing games I've played. There's not much of a story, and seeing how one of the best things about the Mario RPGs is the writing it's really lacking in that regard. All of the RPG elements are pretty much pointless as well, with skipping as many battles as you can in each stage being the best strategy. Really they should have left out the RPG stuff and just have made it a puzzle game, cause the puzzle stuff is the only decent element in the game.

Dream Team is much better, but still one of the lesser Mario RPG games. Just kinda more of the same with a good visual style, but it gets repetitive and boring. I still need to finish it at some point though.

Might be best to wait and see for more impressions for Paper Jam. I don't really trust game reviewers anymore when it comes to them judging a game's writing after how positive they were about the story in games like Heavy Rain, the Tomb Raider reboot and Borderlands 2. All of which have terrible writing IMO.

The review scores might be a bit lower due to the following:
-Formula getting a bit stale after five games
-Pacing issues
-Lack of original locations (which BIS and DT had in abundance)
-Paper Mario integration could be more in-depth (characters from TTYD and the original PM could of appeared)
-Story not as 'massive' as other installments

But many of those (particularly the latter ones) are things that don't detract from the game's quality, just things that could of made it stand out a bit more.

The former elements are things that have to be a role in most of the reviews; after five games the core mechanics must feel stale and considering Dream Team/Dream Team Bros. only game out two years ago, it makes the issue slightly worse. Pacing issues with the Toad Missions have to as be an issue but not a big one.

Judging from reviews, the game is a solid adventure that while having pacing issues and feeling samey at points, its still a great ride with the Mario Bros. and unlike other 'spin-offs' and assets re-using games this year that are weak or do not appeal to everyone, this game stands above those very strong.

Its a bit ironic that this and Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes are strong games; both re-use assets from other 3DS games but still have unique hooks, have a lot of content and got strong reviews (7-8's & a few 9's). While Mario Tennis and Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival being built from scratch (at least MT was; the latter likely is using HD assets from a now-moved to NX AC game) suffer as games lacking content and feeling undercooked.

I still don't get where the pacing issues are, isn't only one review mentioning them? There's even a speed button that makes everything flow faster... in 25 hours in this game I've never felt bored like in DT or BIS.

The NWR review/comments with GamExplain commented on how the abundance of Paper Toad Missions ruined the pacing of the game.

If that isn't the case from your experience with the game so far, that is great to hear :D.

I slogged through almost 50 hours of Dream Team so I think I'll manage here too. It looks really fun with the paper stuff being a better gimmick than say being inside Bowser or even the Dream World.

Some Paper Toad Missions are bad, true, but still the overall pacing is miles ahead the other games.

This was the only Nintendo filler game I had hope for to score decent, so I'm glad it's getting a good reception here. Though with XCX coming out the same day and me not having finished Dream Team yet I think I'm gonna hold out on buying it right away, wait and see how the public reacts to it.

Oh wow, this is coming out a lot sooner than I thought. Sounds great, I love the M&L games and PM should be a fun addition. The character wasn't completely ruined by Sticker Star.

Looking forward to this.

Any confirmation of Paper Luigi being in this game as an NPC or easter egg?

If he's present, I bet it will be a brief appearance in which he doesn't say anything. I imagine the biggest reason he doesn't have a large role is because he's so talkative in the Paper Mario series, which wouldn't feel right here.

Seems as though amiibo festival and ultra smash have got people paranoid.

After Dream Team and a certain number of Nintendo's games recently, I don't blame people. Looks like this is coming out on the right side of the situation, though, which I didn't dare to hope for. Really happy to hear it, though. There's really nothing else quite like this series, and the last one was so disappointing, personally, since it trailered so well and had that great legacy. Paper Jam should hopefully go some way to repair that.

Sticker Star is what got me concerned, since that was an example of Nintendo higher ups ruining a potentially good game and there were signs of this going the same way

This is most likely the reason. However, since the point of a crossover like this is bringing different aspects of two series together and seeing how they interact, it's dumb that they excluded him for being different. It'd be fun to see a talking Luigi interact with a mute one

It could also be from Alpha Dream avoiding what they did with Partners in Time; having two characters being playable in addition to the core Mario Bros. might make puzzle sections stale and old fast.

Granted, Paper Luigi has a lot to make himself different from Paper Mario (could use the partners from older games, could have high jumps,
Can use his abilities as Mr. L
, ect) but I guess they wanted to focus on making Paper Mario's inclusion feeling as fresh and unique as possible, leading to that being the focus with Paper Jam.

And Triforce, and Chibo Robo, and Happy Home Designer, and the fact that Sticker Star was weak and Dream Team was only okay.

I'm glad this is getting decent reviews, but It's a shame the magic of Bowser's Inside Story still eludes them.

Triforce heroes and Happy Home Designer are good games. They are not 10/10 but they were reviewed well for the most part.

Honestly this and Zelda: Tri-Force Heroes should of been the games that was going to be bad, but they were far better than the two games you are talking about.

I guess due to re-using content from other 3DS games (Zelda: LBW/Paper Jam: Dream Team and Sticker Star), both Grezzo and Alpha Dream had strong bases to work with and thus lead to very strong games being created using those bases.

The Mario RPG series also faces Nintendo making the game worse, as Sticker Star was going to be a traditional Paper Mario game before Myamotto stepped in and demanded "Make this like a traditional Mario game", leading to the end game being a title that was very unfocused and lacked the charm past Paper Mario games had.

Alpha Dream put their foot down to Nintendo's demands with Dream Team but that game had issues with pacing (too long) and consistent tutorials popping up all over the place. Still, it was a great game because they made the game they wanted to make, not the game Nintendo wanted them to make.

With Paper Jam, I get that impression too, as the issues Dream Team had are gone judging from reviewer's comments so far.

I think Alphadream needs to take a break from M&L. Nintendo should give them another franchise to work on, or else let them come up with something entirely new.

I guess my hesitation comes from the fact that Nintendo's marketing strategy kind of gives away how much confidence they have in a title. Games like Majora 3D, Monster Hunter, Splatoon, Yoshi, or Mario Maker, will get multiple long mentions in Nintendo Direct, or even more often Nintendo Directs of their own.

But games that should by reasonable logic be big titles, like Triforce or this game, kind of just get released, which strikes me as odd.

I'd be interested in seeing them make a Kirby RPG. I think the art style and gameplay would be a good fit
