Mario Odyssey Pre-install Now Available

Yes and if you ask the other way around:
Are downloads from other regions unlockable at japan time by changing the account to JP or using a VPN?
Because they are all the same SKU, like a Steam game.

I offered 2 possibilities. and your answer was Yes. Which were you "yessing" to? :)

Sorry, it wasn't clear to me. :)

I bought it from the US eShop but when I tried to download it from the JP eShop I didn't knew how. So I just downloaded it from the US :(

So I tried to launch the game and it says "Checking internet to see if this can be played." And then says "It cannot be played yet" And you can choose more info button and then which store you want to log into. I logged into Japan and it just says when it's due out in Japan.

So it remains to be seen whether my American Switch will hew to the Japan release or the US release. Or if it is system-level based or storefront profile-based.

If I were to design a pre download like this,

I would encrypt key parts of the download using a key that I wouldn't distribute over the network until the day of release.

No idea what Nintendo's approach is though.

I'm quite sure it's going to look at the timezone of your Nintendo Account. I suggest keeping your account to Japan region.

Now, even though the launch in Japan is 16 hours earlier than the US, I wonder if a JPN-downloaded Amazon code copy of Mario, fully downloaded, will be playable 16 hours earlier than US,

Super Mario Odyssey doesn't have a global time release.

I don't think its possible to play on JP release timing on my US account since I downloaded the game from US eShop. I don't want to play the game on my JP account.
But it shows as purchased in your JP eShop if you change region, it's a universal SKU.
If they don't do additional checks about where the actual payment was made, I think the possibility is pretty high that it will work (at least with a japanese IP over VPN).

Thats how Nintendo does it since 3DS and WiiU.
The download is encrypted and the key (ticket) is distributed on launchday.

Edit: Sorry doublepost.

Let me show you what it shows when I enter JP eShop after buying the game from US

What kind of controller will you be using with Super Mario Odyssey?

Separated Joy Cons?
Joy Cons with Grip?
Pro Controller?

Joy Cons connected to the Switch mostly. I've been traveling a lot, so 99% of my use is as a portable. I don't like the Switch in tabletop mode (I really wish the kickstand was better and had some adjustability.)

Whenever I get a chance to play it docked, it will be with the Pro controller.

Can you all explain to me why South Africa is not being heavily considered here? It's $10+ cheaper. Is there any shortcome I'm overlooking?

Can someone answer me this please?

Tried all 3 yesterday, but preferred Attached and Pro Controller.
The game seems to want you to play with detatched joycons though as it often informs you of things you can do with the motion sensors.

I just watched the 5mins or so trailer on the eshop. I'm so hyped, but I'm only 10hrs into Zelda and I know both deserve my undivided attention

Pro Controller on the TV, but hopefully the controls are simple enough so that I can play comfortably laying in bed in handheld mode sometimes too.

I know thats why I bought it from the US eShop in the first place but was confused cause I couldn't pre-load from the JP eShop
You can redownload from the JP shop if you want.
But it doesn't really matter I guess, since it's all one universal distribution server.
So you think we can play early from our jpn accounts?
It's pure speculation at this point, but the evidence makes me pretty hopeful.

But I think we will at least need a VPN with japanese IP.

But again, pure speculation.

I watch this thread with frustration because I still cannot afford a Switch with Odyssey right now. It's my most anticipated game since, heck, since I finished Mario 3D World on Wii U 3+years ago. I got so overwhelmed once I finished the game that the first thing I thought was "I'm already looking forward to the next 3D Mario game" yet here I am being poor and sad because I would not be able to play it this friday :'( Being poor sucks you guys... Lol :c I guess I will have to follow Sony's advice from that infamous PS3 reveal: Time to get a second job to afford it.

No worries bro! Just be patient until you can afford it. It's not gonna lose it's fun during the wait. Until then, find some other games to occupy your time. I recommend A Hat in Time and Yooka Laylee to scratch that 3D platforming itch until then. Or you could always revisit some of the older Mario games like Sunshine, Galaxy 1&2, etc.
