Mario Party 9: anyone excited?

Really amazing this series has not gotten online play yet(never mind the fact that it had only two (2) console installments this generation). A missed opportunity by Hudson.

I am actually looking forward to Mario Party 9. Really want it to turn out as a nice progression for the series, especially after the abomination called Mario Party 8.

My friends and I have recently been on quite a Mario Party binge. We've enjoyed Mario Party 2 on the Wii's VC and have also delved into MP4, MP5, and MP6. All of these are quite fun. Mario Party 4 has arguably the best mini games, Mario Party 5 has the best boards, and Mario Party 6 surprisingly has solid boards (with the changing mechanics and all) and some pretty damn great competitive mini games.

Wii Party was also really fun and we still occasionally play that.

If Mario Party 9 ends up being as good as MP6 or MP2 then it'll be a must-buy for sure. Online play wouldn't be a selling point at all though; I'd be in it for the local multiplayer goodness.

Haven't played one of these since the first one left a graveyard of N64 controllers.
Isn't that one of the reasons that Mario Party 1 wasn't released on Virtual Console, while Mario Party 2 was?

Every game after the first one took out stick-rotating games, for the most part. One of the downsides of MP2 is that many of its games are "mash the A button" types, as replacements for stick-rotating ones. Though in general that game still has a sort of simplicity that's appreciated amongst the gimmickry of the rest of the series.

I had always been hesitant to try every game in the series, but after playing quite a bit of 4, 5, and 6 it's quite apparent that the loss of stick-rotating games and button-mashing games has mostly been for the better. Again, MP6 in particular really has some of the best fair-but-competitive mini games that I've played in any MP game. But I don't want to undersell the selection of mini games in 4 or 5 either since there are some real gems in those as well.

Where else will I get my Waluigi fix?

Just noticed playable Shy Guy in it too. Cool.

The only fun of Mario Party comes from playing it in a room with your friends (if at all possible, with alcohol or any other mind-altering substance). Why on Earth would anybody want to play it online?

First one was good, second was great, third was a disappointment, and 4-7 were actually pretty solid, but I never played 8 due to everyone slamming it. I hope they take some of the good ideas from Wii Party (the number of different and unique game modes of varying length) and apply it to Mario Party 9.

Also I want Mario Party 3DS.

I actually loved Mario Party Advance, believe it or not. It was pretty fun, despite it being, oddly enough, single player focused.

The last mario Party I played was the one that had a penguin minigame where you dodged penguins and tried not to get pushed off.... It was awesome

haha i remember that mini game, my friends and I used to just play that nonstop, that giant penguin was awesome.

fuck, they should really put retro mini games in the new mario party.

online is good because, "forever alone time" , no one i know plays mario party or owns a wii :/

Why do people think online play in Mario Party would be fun? It's way more satisfying to be with your friends in the same room. Also, I think this game got sidelined by Fortune Street, which should also be a good party game.
Agreed. Also anyone with high or even decent expectations for a Nintendo title's online are already setting themselves up for a rude awakening.

used to love mario party, but then they began to feel like shovel ware. very little effort put into creating new experiences. give me some better incentive to play.

Hell yes! It looks like a real return to form for the series based off that trailer!

The series really needed a good long break after the disgrace that was Mario Party 8 (though MP DS was really good)

To be honest, I really don't care about online play. Mario Party is a game that needs to be played with friends in the same room. If you're not within punching distance of your friend, it's just not the same.

Mario Party 3 is still the highlight of the series for me. It's gonna take a lot to topple that giant!

God that game is so much fun with 4 people! (Oh and Luigi really is god tier in Mario Party 2!)

I am excited for playable Koopa Troopa, and nothing else.

It's all for nothing if it doesn't have playable Boo (AKA, best character in the series)

Nuff said.

Looking forward to it, I love Mario Party. Couldn't care less about online though.

Truth.

wait, hold on. Why are people thinking this will have online play?
This is Nintendo guys, they don't do online for anything but the most basic games and Mario Kart.

despite their faults, even the worst mario party was mad fun with 4 people. i've had a blast even with mp8 despite probably being the worst overall.

another thing is that owning multiple MPs is a must since playing the same one over and over kills it a bit faster. the GC MPs stayed fresh because of this and it has been a blast revisiting them after they stopped making new ones after 8.

No.

But on the subject of Mario Party, pokecapn and team - you know, the Sonic 2006 LP guys - have recently finished an LP run of the entire console Mario Party series, which fully illustrates the bloodthirsty, diabolical nature of the entire franchise.

Pokecapn's LP of Mario Party 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 (plus a Super Secret Surprise* game)

My favourite is Mario Party 5. It totally destroys them psychologically.

*Not actually that surprising.

As one of the biggest Mario Party fans on this board... not really.

:(

Then, sir, I must claim this title from you! Me and my friends have played this for so long, for so many hours, that it's rather insane. The last couple of years we've made an addition of using it as a drinking game we play at least once per summer with the deluxe cruise on Mario Party 7. So we've been about 8 players, and whichever team loses a mini-game has to take a shot. Whoever wins can deal out a shot to one person.

And one guy brings something no one can stand to drink that we have to shot with Bowser Mini-games. It takes the whole thing to a whole other level. When you know you have to shot something you're certain will make you throw up, you DO NOT want to lose a Bowser Mini-game. The sheer terror

Mario Party 8 wanted me to play in single player to unlock content, Star Battle Arena mode or whatever. Get out with that bullshit.

I'm really excited for it, especially how the new Ex-Hudson folks at NdCube fare.

I want NdCube to literally become that Hudson that Nintendo should've owned for years.

And that includes borrowing Bomberman from Konami, a Wii U-exclusive Bomberman adventure made side-by-side Nintendo? *drools*

I mean NdCube is headed by ex-president of Hudson who's been around at Hudson seince Bomberman 64. :D

As for MP, the last I played was 5, but that kept clunking out on me. :/

Really excited for it! Its been ages since a new one, something I can play with my GF and she actually enjoys it for once (she loves the series).

Couldn't give a stuff about online, I like playing with my family too but its something we'd do all together on the same TV not over the net. Just isn't the same fun as when you're all playing together in the same room lol'ing over everything.

Mario Party 5 is for certain the most evil of the Mario Party games. I mean, it's not like the entire game is similar to Bowser's board in MP2, but in terms of the random things that can happen to you on the boards, it's really easy to get screwed over. And the more turns you play, the more screwed you're likely to become.

It can literally wipe the floor with its players if it wants to. A diabolical game for sure.

Of course, whether that's a fault or not is up to opinion. However, I will say a definite issue with the game is the amount of time it takes to deal with gimmicks. No one needs to see para troopa steal every person's coins individually (that shit's like a fucking cut scene). And there's usually no point in not getting capsules but you always have to go through the process of saying "yes" to the capsule dispensers. These are a couple of examples.

One of the aspects that my friends and I like about MP6 over MP5 is that it streamlines things better. For example, capsules (called "orbs" in MP6) are in the game but they reside on spaces themselves, so you pass a space, collect an orb real quick, and move on.

Hopefully Mario Party 9 isn't slowed down too much by the gimmicks.

So ND Cube is the new party game developer for Nintendo now?

Have been since Wii Party mate. They are basically Hudson reborn anyway and they were always at their best when making multiplayer party style games so I'm happy with that!

BTW, that box art is bitchin! (though I can't see Boo on there :( )

Seemingly, but I'm waiting for the credits in the game to see just how much NDCube consists of Hudson folks, yes I'm sounding like a broken record. :P

I don't want NDCube to ONLY be a party house, if there are lots of Hudson folks there, then they should try to take advantage of that talent, make new mascot IPs, borrow Bomberman or even buy it, something that is also classic Hudson, not just MP. :)

I still fucking adore Bomberman 64. Hero's okay, but it didn't feel the same, perhaps in 64 it was the puzzle aspect of bomb placement to get to secret places (bomb skipping FTW), plus that damn catchy soundtrack.

Because some people have friends who aren't always in their houses.

Haven't played one in years, and I've since sold my Wii as it only collected dust.. but my kids are at the age where we'd have lots of fun with it.

I wish they made a PS3/Xbox equivalent to Mario Party.. actually isn't there one on 360 from years ago that was a Mario Party-esque?

Did Wii Party have no credits? I cannot find them anywhere.

Damn straight, not only is the logo the best in the series, but the box is DAZZILING! :D

If the logo and box was done by Nd Cube, keep that designer on a leash! XD

It just really appeals to me, I think it's the mass of colors, even for Mario's standards. :)

Nada, couldn't find any anywhere. :(
