Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle live action trailers

These are genuinely awful - the pacing of the joke is nonexistent.

EDIT: Gah, I just can't get over how poorly put together these are. Like, they're obviously low-budget, but the director cuts so as to make it 1000x more apparent, while shooting for gritty realism.

Welcome to television advertising, where attention spans and budgets are limited and people watching aren't as educated as you want.

It's not a drive-by post: I'm stating my opinion on the ads, which is the purpose of this thread.

It's not 'faux-controversy', I'm saying that a Call of Duty style battle scene and a GTA style heist are references aimed at a particular set of very traditional gamers and that they're the ones who will get the 'joke', but that the actual audience for this game is much wider, and also I'm implying that publishers have a responsibility to move past all this cliche Xtreme edge shit as it really excludes women, POC, people who have got into videogames more recently and who don't see violent masculine games as part of their video game world etc.

It's like advertising a Ghibli film by making a joke about Die Hard or something.

These ads are making fun of such things, though. It's pretty much exactly like this Sunset Overdrive trailer, subverting expectations by starting out serious and going into something silly. They aren't references only a certain selection of people will understand either so I can't get that argument at all. In fact, going from gritty realism to the colourful carefree Mario world will only drive away the types of people you think this ad is aimed at. Those who care for Xtreme edge won't be seen dead with a bloody Mario x Rabbids crossover.

I think you are taking this way too serious. Mario & Rabbids is like a ghibli film now? The game doesn't take itself as serious as you take it. Not to even mention that you're analysing a parody like the real thing.

The juxtaposition of something serious with the silly inclusion of the rabbits makes the joke. These trailers don't rely on the audience being CoD junkies or GTA diehards, but on how something as absurd as choosing a rabbit as a partner in war could only make sense in a videogame. For the record I just showed it to two different gal pals who each loved the Rabbids games on the Wii and they both had a laugh.

I did not expect positive reception to these. I get what they're going for, but they're just so... lame. Without the humor they just seem unnecessarily grim for a Mario game.

I don't know why you're judging them without the humour. That and Mario + Rabbids isn't a typical Mario game, the leaked documents made clear that both Nintendo and Ubisoft are going for a more "edgy" approach this time. On a cursory glance at Amazon UK it's the only Mario game with a "7+" (E10+ equiv.) rating instead of a "3+" (E equiv.) here outside of Mario Party 10 (for some reason) and Rio Olympics (for the guns, maybe).

I am judging them with the humor, I'm just saying that there isn't much humor, imo of course. Yeah, it's unexpected, but it just falls flat.

The pacing's not great, yeah, but I do think the joke is good. It's all subjective, though I definitely don't agree with it being too "grim" for the type of game Ubisoft is going for.

I heard Maceys are having a sale on fedoras

I admin that these are kinda funny, but they do so not fit a Mario game, to be quite honest.

I love the music, though. ACDC-like music is always welcome, as well as the real deal.

The juxtaposition is perfect given the reaction to the leaks lol.

"Wait... What the hell did I just see?" Is pretty much exactly the reaction people had to the leaked internal materials. Also, I'm cool with the violence because, despite the PG-nature of the characters involved, the gameplay is likely going to be way over the heads of the average 8-year old.
