Mark Cerny joins Twitter, on 10 day tour with Kojima to explore technology options

Unlikely.
In fairness, technically they do own it. But it was proprietary, so no point trying to use it elsewhere. Be as difficult to make a new game with barely documented codebase as it would be to build a new engine. In fact, a new engine would be built with the game in mind.

Anyway...

Nothing. They're friends and JJ has had an interest in games for a while now, but I don't think it's to the point where he really wants to make one. He just seems to have a clear respect and interest in the medium. Remember a few years ago he had that keynote speech together with Gabe Newell and nothing came of that.

There was also an interactive teaser for Super 8 in Portal 2.

I just remembered that Cerny said Kojima got annoyed with him at one point before the PS4 launch because he wouldn't share what all the first party studios were up to. The perks of going exclusive LOL

Part of me thinks this trip has the ulterior motive of making sure PlayStation remains the console of choice for Kojima Productions.

The studio is independent and I don't think Kojima ever wants to be subject to publisher control again, but I imagine Sony is angling him into a Quantic Dream second party situation i.e. choosing only to develop on PlayStation despite having the freedom to release on other platforms. Though in KP's case PC will be in the mix too. Kojima will be so integrated in the PlayStation development pipeline, have access to all the top consultants like Cerny, and have access to the top brass of PlayStation in his native country, and he's surely developing relationships with top developers in the WWS stable during his tour. Maybe he decides he can have it all as a independent second party developer with Sony bankrolling his games.

^^^ Edit: Nothing ulterior about it. It was implied before negotiations even began. Where else would Kojima even go? Nintendo? Sony can help him accomplish a lot more of his dreams — gaming and otherwise — than Nintendo are positioned to do.

Seems like PlayStation is giving Hideo Kojima a blank cheque.
Only a handful of developers has performed at his level for so many years and we're talking Carmack & Myamoto and perhaps the Houser brothers here.
I think this is largely a "Welcome to the family; get to know all your cousins" tour. KojiPro is independent, but during the announcement video, House made a point of welcoming him to the PlayStation family, which isn't a term they use for casual partnerships. Sony have had a pretty solid relationship with Kojima over the years, but that's been impeded by his allegiance to Konami. Now that he's his own man, then much like his guide, Cerny, he's now free to form any sort of relationship he chooses.

And I do think this is primarily a fact-finding mission for KojiPro. JJ may be an old buddy, but Kojima is definitely there to get input and feedback on his new studio, even if it's just advisory. Kojima's first project will be a PS4 game, but he has big plans for KojiPro, that may or may not involve JJ and Sony down the road. If Kojima wants to produce a movie based on his new IP, perhaps his buddy JJ will direct it for him, and his friends at Sony Pictures will help with distribution.

Yup, this too. Again, much like Cerny, now that Kojima is independent, Sony can let him very close to what they're doing if they choose to. I predict KojiPro and SCE will work very closely together in the future, and with Sony as a whole. Sony really are everywhere Kojima wants to be, so it seems like everybody wins here.

Lol, it's like a mystical long lost heroic uncle visiting all of his extended family.
Very much like that, yes.

Perhaps not Nintendo unless the NX proves itself as a graphically robust console with a large audience. But Microsoft has the resources to put any financial or technical asset at Kojima's fingertips. However, what they cannot offer him, as he mentioned before, is that comfort level forged over years of close collaboration. I just see this as a formalization of that with Sony saying to Kojima "This is everything you have available to you to forge your vision." He might never look elsewhere if given the tools and time he needs to create. Which may keep him off a competitor's box.

P.S. This just solidifies it for me. Look how happy they look! Kojima and company are going to do great things with Sony and free of tyrannical Konami. I can feel it.

This makes me happy beyond belief, Cerny and Kojima will be able to do wonderful things together. Thank god he escaped from Konami.

"#SCEfamily" seems to solidify things indeed. Looks like Kojima Production's first IP exclusive won't be the last.

Sony is really the only hardware giant that would've worked for Kojima's grand ambition. Nintendo's fanbase isn't the audience Kojima caters to, and XBOX's core is too US-centric for Kojima's international focus.

Doesn't hurt that Sony has its own film, music, etc. studios to help give the IP a cross-media platform, and already has a long, successful history with Kojima going back almost 20 years.

I personally thought he'd go with a Tencent or Riot Games-esque insurgent in the console space looking to make a splash with core gamers and willing (and able) to indulge Kojima's lack of restraint.

But if we're choosing among the big 3, then Sony's the only logical choice.

They are likely trying to show Kojima how "happy" their devs are. After that shitshow at Konami, they are probably trying to show him the "normal" side of AAA game development. I dont blame them, honestly.

We basically, agree, but my point is, there's no need for Sony to "demonstrate" this to Kojima, because it was already known long before he even left Konami. It's really only his loyalty to Konami that's prevented him from fully leveraging the relationships he's built with Sony, and now he's finally free of that.

Sure, MS are a tech company with tons of money, but Sony are a multi-modal entertainment powerhouse with more than enough money to get KojiPro on their feet. Sony really are in a unique position to provide Kojima with anything and everything he'll ever need, now and in the future. This trip isn't to show Kojima what Sony can offer him. It's so he can get his #SCEfamily and their friends up to speed on what his plans are for the next 5-10 years, so they can then better advise and assist him in those endeavors.

Like I said, Kojima will be tight with Sony just like Cerny is; they work together because they respect each other.

Sony know how to build solid relationships in general, but specifically for Kojima, the bolded makes them an even easier choice for whom to partner with.

But I still think this wasn't so much a choice as a foregone conclusion. Anything else would've been pretty shocking, really.

That first video with Andrew House showed a very restrained Kojima who was probably still reeling from the whole K***** affair, tired, but these photos show him back to being upbeat, engaged and looking happy.

Sony probably allows the most freedom to the developers from the big publishers, and I imagine that's something Kojima appreciates, especially after the past events.

EDIT:

Kojima is aligned with Dark Side confirmed.
