Kung Fu Panda!

U177s.gif

lol pandas are truly the greatest creatures on this fucking planet.

SecretFawful just showed two gifs of one of the greatest choreographed fight scenes put to film. The energy in that fight scene was INCREDIBLE. Yes, I am comparing that to Bruce Lee's epic fight in Enter the Dragon, the end fight in S.P.L, the staircase fight in The Protector.

That scene is legendary.

Chocolate
The Raid
The Warlords
Ong Bak
Ong Bak 2
Rurouni Kenshin
13 Assassins
Zatoichi

Sorted.

(P.S. I really dislike wire work so no one floats on tippy-toe across the tops of pine trees)

^^^The Grandmaster is FUCKING GORGEOUS to look at, at the very least.

Watch these Jackie Chan movies:

Armour of God
Armour of God 2: Operation Condor
Police Story
Police Story 2
Police Story 4: First Strike
Wheels on Meals
Project A
Project A II
Drunken Master 2
Rumble in the Bronx
Who Am I
Mr. Nice Guy
Dragons Forever
Dragon Lord
Robin B Hood
Rush Hour
Rush Hour 2

These guys know whats up. Only one missing is police story 3 supercop which is one of my favorite jackie chan movies =/. first drunken master is also pretty great

Eight Diagram Pole Fighters

Easily my favourite, the final half hour is one of the finest you'll see in any martial arts film with two superb fights.

Some other great films I'd recommend;

. The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
. Avenging Eagle
. The Boxer from Shantung
. Blood Brothers
. Clan of the White Lotus
. Crippled Avengers
. Duel to the Death
. Five Element Ninjas
. The Five Venoms
. Legendary Weapons of China
. Magnificent Ruffians
. Masked Avengers
. The Prodigal Son (Yuen Biao, Sammo Hung)
. The South Shaolin Master
. Snake in the Monkey's Shadow
. The Snuff Bottle Connection
. The Young Master (Jackie Chan)

If you're specifically after weapons based martial arts, seriously check out Duel to the Death;

Plus, The South Shaolin Master is a very unique kung fu film that features some very large scale battles and a lot of weird & crazy Chinese weapons.

I heard it wasn't very good, hence why I skipped it and watched the 3rd Ip Man movie >_>;
I liked it better than the first one. But granted, I enjoy when martial art films are lighter in plot and heavier in awesome fighting :P Which 3rd Ip Man movie did you watch? The other Ip Man movies are not related to the Donnie Yen films, right?

Also, no one should recommend any Ong Bak film that isn't the first one.

Well OK then based off your comments I'll give it a watch ;)

Maybe patting is better way to put it. Most of those punches do not look like they have any strenght behind them.

Just because they don't look painful doesn't mean they're not painful. The 'sound effect' to me sounds more like a really fast punch, now imagine getting hit by dozens of those very fast punches...

I've not watched the Undisputed movies said to say, but will check out some of the fights.

BTW I highly recommend House of Fury. It's silly and action-packed and awesome, my favorite kind of martial arts film. Love it.

In the Line of Duty 4.

arguably the best contemporary martial arts action flick of all time, no hyperbole. there's a fight scene every 5 minutes, all of them awesome.

features Donnie Yen molesting people with punches and kicks.

Stealth Donnie Yen post-2003 thread.

look above, friend. his best movie came out in 1989, all others are fighting for that 2nd place.

I also liked Ip Man 2, but I'm known to enjoy even mediocre movies. I also have to recommend Rurouni Kenshin again. Yes, the Gatotsu was rather lame, but I really enjoyed the choreography.

WKW's The Grandmaster. Region free blu rays at are out in HK now. It has it flaws, felt like its scope could have done with a Dr Zhivago like running time. Still hoping there will be a redux longer cut down the line that could make this a classic.

Parts of it are really wonderful though, I loved all the scenes in the Golden house. Its approach to martial arts, their philosophy and what the wuxia world was like during the time when China was a republic was different from any thing that came before. It isn't another Ip Man film.

The two part docu in the extras about all their research into martial arts is really interesting too. I wish could release WKW's massive binder as a book or something, doen't feel that the movie in its current form does all that research effort justice.

Zhang Ziyi is really great in this.
whaaaat how did WKW release a new film and I didn't know about it?

The Once Upon a time in China series...or anything by Tsui Hark.

Oh, absolutely.
But don't forget Yuen Woo-Ping either.

Some of my favourite ones that come to mind:
A Chinese Ghost Story
Iron Monkey
Tai Chi Master
Drunken Master 1&2

And for craziness: The Kung Fu Cult Master with Jet Li.

This is awesome! I don't mean to de-rail this thread, and I can certainly make a new one, but anyone ALSO have recommendations for modern martial arts flicks? I'm thinking of moves like The Man From Nowhere, and Flashpoint.

While I'm at it, if anyone could recommend Euro-ish action movies other than Ronin, Taken, and Bourne 1-2 I'd be grateful.

Total classic.

Okay I'm a little disgusted it took this long to mention this film.

Some of my faves:

I love this one for two reasons:
-it stars Alexander Fu Sheng whose life and career were tragically cut short
-a rare shaw bros/venom mob flik set in modern times

Any newer movies you guys could recommend.

I just watched new Dragons Gate with Jet Li and The Sorcerer and The White Snake. I enjoyed both. I like anything with Jet Li in it.

Tai Chi Master/Twin Warriors
King of Beggars

^two of my favorites

True Legend was pretty good.

You've given him with this gif. the only thing worth seeing in Flashpoint. The movie is terrible.

Merantau is a great martial art flick about a young master in the art of Silat trying to teach children while seeking experience outside of his little village.

Whoa, hate on Flashpoint but recommend Merantau?

Merantau is by far a better martial art movie than Flashpoint. XD It's indiscutable.

True Legend is really good tho, I agree. Even tho it's mostly over the top action like in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, it's amazing.

Ong-Bak for me. In fact, any of Tony Jaa's movies:

Ong-Bak
Ong-Bak 2 (aka The Beginning)
Ong-Bak 3
Tom Yum Goong (aka Warrior King aka The Protector)

The guy is incredible!

Everything before that was perfection. Ong bak 3 was pretty shit in comparison IMO.

And to the OP, if you really want weapon based action. Ong Bak 2's final fight has the greatest weapon based choreographed fight I've ever seen.

People have already mentioned Ip Man, but those two movies are easily among the best martial arts movies I have ever seen. And being a huge fan of anime I immediately recognized the music and said to myself, that must be Kenji Kawai, and it was. So if you haven't seen them, go do it right now.

My DVD of this is scratched like it was violated by DJ Jazzy Jeff. :(

Heroes of the East - My absolute favorite Shaw. The MA on display is quite varied, and the comedy really works. Plus, Gordon Liu.

Crippled Avengers - The Venoms team are amazing martial artists, and the premise is so audacious your group will never forget it.

Both DVD's are quality.
