Martin Schulz will lead the SPD in Germany's election surprise decision

A lot of people have compared him to Berlusconi, yeah. Gladly he doesn't own the media empire, though.
Let's hope that Trump is not like Berlusconi in the sense of being re-elected 3-4 times.

God Berlusconi was an asshole, watching the video that Gurgelhals linked makes me want to strangle him slowly and painfully.
Schulz's response was amazing though. Bet he'd pull that off easily every time Trump tries to make a similar snide remark about him or Germany.

New Forsa poll today #KeineBremsen

CDU/CSU 35%
!! SPD 26% !!
AfD 11%
LINKE 9%
GRÜNE 8%
FDP 6%

Would be quite ironic if Brexit and Trump keep the AFD <10%.

Refugee crisis is largely calmed down at the moment so all they have left is racism.

Dat momentum.

Same polling company, two weeks ago:

CDU/CSU 38%
SPD 21%

Hopefully SPD will manage to pull more votes from CDU/CSU and maybe even AfD. If Linke or Grüne would gain just a little bit of ground a left-leaning government would certainly be possible. Cause if that doesn't happen im fearful the CDU/CSU will just end up with 32%, SPD at something like 28%, grand coalition happens, Merkel is chancellor, nothing chances. I mean, that wouldn't be terrible since, I mean, look at us compared to the rest of the world, but it would be sad to see Schulz' candidancy go to waste.

#KeineBremsen, indeed! I hope this doesn't stop until SPD and CDU reach 30% / 31% while the others (especially AfD) lose some ground.

If Schulz is an alternative to Merkel, then there is no need for the party itself.

#SchulzFacts is killing me lmao

learned about this subreddit a few days ago and enjoy visiting it regularly now. Full of meme's and positive spin, kind of reminds me of the pirate party a few years back. I can see how this could appeal to the younger pro-EU crowd.

Twisting nationalistic paroles into ridiculous parodies makes me smile.

I just want to see the AfD below 10. I think the FDP should buckle up to fish the remaining liberals from them.

Fuck AFD. Disgraceful bunch of bigots. I'm glad Schulz is doing well and I'd be even happier if more AFD voters came to their senses and voted for a moderate party instead. I think 2017 will be the year where Germany and France reelect moderate Pro-EU candidates which should lead to a stabilization of the entire continent.

"You think you'll remain as Chancellor.
And then Martin Schulz appears.
Life is bitter."

I lol'd.

r/the_schulz is really turning into an effective antidote for all that hateful meme garbage from across the pond. Germany is not only at the forefront of preserving democratic values. It is also single-handedly fixing internet memes.

As a German with SPD leanings, I have no idea why Schulz is flying so high by doing so little.

Is "not Angie, not Siggi" really all that he needed to be?

It's probably just a combination of
a) people getting a bit tired with Merkel after 12 years (and that's in spite of her being seen as the solid and reliable candidate in difficult times),
b) Schulz not bearing the taint of having been a minister in a grand coalition (which had diminished both Steinmeier's and Steinbrück's effectiveness as campaigners and would have happened to Gabriel as well),
and c) the momentary hype and excitement of a relatively "new" face on the national stage in comparison to twelve years of same old, same old, ...

To be honest, I don't believe that he's going to keep that momentum until autumn. But at the very least, the prospects of a properly fought out campaign between the SPD and the CDU (and not those half-assed low energy efforts we had the past two or three times) is going to do a great service to the overall political culture of the country — not least because it could distract and keep people away from the extremist fringes.

I think a lot of people think of him as not someone from the Berlin establishment which is why he is getting a lot of people that would otherwise vote Afd/linke.

I still expect Merkel to win but i hope this will atleast start a fire under the CDU to actually propose some shit instead of just managing this country.

Merkel is not bad but a bit boring and i think Schulz could kind of get people on board with politics again.

INSA has a new poll:

CDU/CSU: 33% (-0.5)
SPD: 27% (+1)
AfD: 12% (-1)
Grüne: 9% (+1.5)
Linke: 9% (-1.5)
FDP: 6% (-0.5)
Others: 4% (+-0)

A couple things to note though
- CDU/CSU results for INSA are usually a little lower (~2-3%) than those of the other major polling companies
- INSA does online only polls, except for this poll, which was a poll by phone
- SPD already had its huge bump in the last poll of INSA (+5 to 26%)

Edit: In other positive news, all major polling companies right now have the AfD at 12% or lower; except for GMS at 13%, but that poll is a month old by now.

Internet-dweebs turned 30 and ruining my politics. Stop it. Politics is serious buisness. Stop having fun with serious issues! Stop memefying the upcoming elections. Bring back drunk Ede Stoiber and others with a stick up their ass! Bring back the good times.

No.

New Emnid poll:

CDU/CSU: 33% (-4)
SPD: 29% (+6)

AfD: 11% (+-0)
Grüne: 8% (-2)
Linke: 8% (-2)
FDP: 6% (+-0)
Others: 5% (+2)
