Martyrs 2008. What did I just watch?

It's pretty much the worst piece of cinema I have seen since Melancholia, Melancholia would have been the worst movie I have seen this year, but this movie takes the cake. Excessive shock value, primitive story telling, me too horror approach, the only redeeming value was the top notch makeup, and decent acting. Other than that, it was repulsive and vile to the umpteenth degree. If you want something that will ruin your day, and possible your nights, watch this piece of garbage. Next up Serbian Film.

This movie's purpose was to make you feel the way you did. And in that regard, it's done it's job very effectively. One of my favorite movies, ever.

Also, I've been in love with Mylene Jampanoi ever since I've watched that film. That woman is amazing in every way.

Yeah! why do they make horror movies that unsettle you and make you feel bad, horror movies are supposed to make you laugh.

Now you've done it. The freaks will descend upon this thread to defend this pornography as art.
Pornographic? I was rooting for Lucy the entire movie. She was my protagonist. I loved her. What do you honestly expect from this movie, some Jason Vorhees mothafucker? The fucking Jigsaw? lol

misticwhip: Saw is a piece of shit. Martyrs is actually intriguing and the big underlying purpose behind everything that's going on is fuck interesting.

Has nothing to do with that, if there was more of a purpose and premise for the whole movie I wouldn't complain, as it stands it's just a gore flick and nothing more. Just something to shock the viewer.

Movie was not as "OMGWTF" as people claim it to be. Not trying to sound like a badass. Maybe I am just too desensitized now.

Good job missing the entire point.

it's certainly the most depressing piece of cinema i've ever seen.

i had to listen to eliza doolittle (<3) afterwards to cheer me up.

I get the point, I'm just not fond of the execution.

Well, you never stated you did in any of your previous posts.

Anyhow I certainly do agree that the movie has shocking parts meant to shock, but probably not the ones you are thinking of. Shocking to me, was the way the family dies in the first few minutes.

Initially, I didn't like the execution either, but I think some of that has to do with the fact it is a foreign film, and I think some of the intention was lost in translation. I've seen several people on horror message boards say the subtitling/translation was different when you watch it in different languages/regions etc, and some are a bit more illuminating than others.

Be that as it may, Serbian Film is straight up trash meant to shock with the most thinly veiled attempt by the director to try and make it "deep".

I'm not the type of person to typically defend this type of film, but I hold Martyrs to a much higher regard than films like Saw, Hostel and Human Centipede.

I thought the first half of Martyrs was actually a well done depiction of a woman who, as much as she tries to deal with what happened to her and deal with her inability to help those around her within that situation, can never avoid the guilt and dread of her current state of mind. It takes the idea of "the monkey on your back" to an extreme and executes it in a pretty harrowing way.

The second half of Martyrs was kinda shit though with the whole
shadowy organization and silly-ass explanation for the whole project and shit
.

I can't stand the "murder porn" genre. I'm amazed people like this crap

I can't either. I think it's a juvenile and pretty creative-less genre. That said, I wouldn't call Martyrs torture porn.

I was going to bump the old "Martyrs...or what did I just watch?" thread but found this one instead.

It's that time of year again...if you haven't seen Martyrs you are missing out on what is now a one of the classic horror greats. Goddamn, I love this one. Rent it.

I didn't find it as deep as the film seemed to want me to think it was, but it was certainly more interesting than other films of its ilk. The French seem to do this depressing type of horror film better than anyone (ils, Inside, this), but even they fail sometimes (Frontiers).
