Marvel Studios and DMG announced that a Chinese version of Iron Man 3 will be released in China on a date to be announced in the near future. DMG, a Chinese media and entertainment company, collaborated with Marvel Studios on the Chinese elements in the film, and is marketing and distributing the film in China. While Marvel and DMG have decided not to apply for co-production status in China, the film includes significant Chinese elements.

Renowned Chinese actor Wang Xueqi will appear in both the studio’s Chinese version of the film and in its international and domestic US version. Both versions of the film include Iron Man 3 footage filmed in Beijing in December. The Chinese version of the film will also feature a special appearance of China’s top actress, Fan Bingbing, and will offer specially prepared bonus footage made exclusively for the Chinese audience.

Marvel Studios’ experience working on this film with Fan Bingbing and Wang Xueqi and in shooting in China has been very positive and has created a springboard for future collaboration with China’s talented stars and its growing film and television industry. The Iron Man cast and filmmakers look forward to bringing Iron Man back to China.

It looks like someone has been strangling her.

Seriously though, loosen up the choker, that does not photograph well.

DMG paid for a part of the production I believe. They are just chasing that Chinese consumer cash. I wonder if they get a more favorable release time frame because of all of this. Blockbusters tend to be released on the same weekends in China. I doubt the five minute sequence makes a ton of difference in the story.

It is funny to see studios fall all over themselves to be viewed more favorably to the Chinese to do business there.

pshh, considering marvel's history those 5 minutes for the new characters will probably have more plot and character development than the actual film

This is just a link I picked up as I read it somewhere else too. It's a possibility that China may pass the US as the world's top Market by 2016. They have $ to spend on services and if film makers see profit there it's very easy to see why they would want to spread that virus. Lets get that economy bleeding for actresses and actors in first level films. Win Win for everyone. We keep buying tickets and they keep buying tickets.

For now.

He's still Asian.

True, so I shouldn't be weirded out that they got a Portuguese dude to play Jesus in the Bible show on History Channel. It's near the same body of water if you sail around some stuff.

No dude, the version of the character in this film is actually not Asian. He's a Weaboo. Seriously.

Are you being serious? Cause that would be funny as hell and I would totally buy that.

Doesn't sound fair that only Chinese audience would get exclusive footage. They better release that on blu ray.

China only allows 34 foreign films to be shown in theaters per year:

China is the #2 box office behind the US:

Movie companies have gone from complaining about Chinese piracy to putting in pro-Chinese elements in their films.

Ugh ok but how does it make sense to add footage to the chinese version that won't be available anywhere else.

Why not just include it in every "version" of the movie?

Their bigest stars aren't popular elsewhere? They probably think it will make more casual moviegoers want to see it since they get to see their favorite star.

Unfortunately, studios have already been investigating ways of customizing movies in order to further pander to specific regional audiences.

I remember there was talk of doing something like this with The Other Guys, which had a Derek Jeter cameo. IIRC, they'd tried to do another version, maybe for some European country, but it didn't pan out. Either way, after the movie was released one of the producers talked about how cool it would be to do tons of different versions where they just substitute in different regional celebrities, to get extra publicity in every place.
