Marvel Wants to Start a Marvel Game Universe, lists Facebook game as example

Jeph Loeb is busy being the head of their television department, which is why Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes was replaced with Avengers Assemble, and why Hulk: Agents of SMASH and Agents of SHIELD are things. Make of that whatever you will.

Anyway. We're off to a poor start. I don't care about mobile or Facebook games, so if you're not about to tell me about the Iron Man equivalent of Arkham City, or a Sleeping Dogs-type game set in the Seven Cities of Heaven, or a Cap game that's part-stealth part-action, etc. etc. etc....I'm afraid I'm not terribly interested?

I'm not saying it couldn't work, though. Personally I could subsist as a gamer almost entirely off well-done licensed IPs (from all forms of media) with the occasional original game thrown in, but I'm weird.

I think Wacker's slated to replace him.

Read the article in the OP and I fail to see how the title of this topic and the information in the article correspond at all. It just seems like Marvel is congratulating themselves for what they've already done with all of their mobile platform games (the ISO-8 stuff). I don't see how this has any relevance to console gaming.

I assume he's talking about mobile/browser/social. One of the Disney studios built this backbone for Avengers Alliance—Marvel XP—that was supposed to serve as the backbone for a range of mobile/social/browser titles.

I find it funny how Marvel kicks DC's ass in movies, but looses in every other adaptation format.

The problem with Marvel is that it's owned by Disney and they are only interested in making ultra casual browser and mobile games. Everything more ambitious would need to be licensed to other publisher, but there you can't get the same level of control, so making shared universe would be extremely hard.

They're winning in films and in comics; the two places that matter. Right now both DC and Marvel have nothing special going on in animation (DC has nothing, period), and someone tell me when DC can get a game off the ground that doesn't have the word "Batman" in it first.

This, coming from a DC fanboy. I hate seeing my favorite company in disarray like this.

Far as I know, Wacker's just taking up a job with Marvel Animation. Didn't say what level he'd be working at, though.

Yep. That would well and truly make them irrelevant to me and doubtless a lot of other gamers. But more likely he just meant in general.

Whole lotta nothing right there.

Certainly nothing last year or upcoming.

It may feature 7 Batman characters, but "Batman" isn't in the title!

also this thing I guess

You can't even compare animated movies; Marvel's not even in the race. They got Big Hero 6 coming out in a little while but besides that they haven't done anything animated since...Next Avengers, or whatever that was.

I totally meant television animation. Marvel technically has more on but their shows are all kind of blah, while DC has to deal with CN which apparently hates superheroes right now.

>_< Don't get me started. Injustice was a good game but they drowned us in DLC and yes, there are seven Batman characters--several of those slots could've easily gone to other characters.

No. Drop the Lego Stuff and make a similar, and more serious game.

Yeah I like Lego Marvel for the Marvel novelty, but the game design is pretty lackluster and the writing is really bad, none of the jokes are that funny. In that way it really doesn't leverage the Lego brand very well, so I'd love to see Marvel try a real Marvel Superheroes or Avengers open world game with a bunch of playable characters like that.

Don't tie it in to the movies.

Do an 'Arkham' and make a decent game in its own right.

A whole Marvel universe game would be way too ambitious though.

Would prefer an X-men game, a Avengers game, a Fantastic Four game etc.

It'll definitely be inspired in some way by the MCU, probably in a significant way, but not completely a tie-in.

Could be pretty cool, but they'd probably screw it up just as much as they did their Animated Universe on Disney XD. Wouldn't be surprised if it was nothing but mobile junk.

Movies are the only thing they seem interested in putting actual effort into.

Currently TV spanks movies badly quality wise. Plus games deliver long term entertainment.

To be honest, movies are what matters the least to me. It's ridiculous to see people getting hyped up, making threads etc during two years for something that will last 2 hours. Especially since Marvel movies are pretty standard big budgeted flicks: pretty, but ultimatelly empty and meaningless. Not that DC is doing any better with MoS.

I really hope they're willing to give honest Marvel games a try. Disney seems strangely cautious about ever building games outside of the casual space. Infinity shows that they've got capable talent who can make creative experiences, and their mobile games have been pretty fun - but it's a shame that they don't believe in creating true AAA experiences with their franchises.

Marvel Nemesis 2. Make it happen

But plz no dumb original characters this time

I don't have a single problem with any of the Bat characters in that game. Too many Batman stages sure (why did we need 2 Arkhams?) but the character selection was fine.
except for Scorpion

Lol comics don't matter for shit thanks to how contracted that market got due to the 90s crash

Thank u Arkham games for showing everyone that comics can be made into great games. Just expand and mold those games framework to the specific Marvel characters, and not lazily like Deadpool.

They're doing, actively, worse. MoS is an empty movie aside from those kick-ass DBZ-style Kryptonian on Kryptonian fight scenes. And if Superman vs. Batman is good, it'll be a miracle.

I think television is more important than movies too, but movies make way more money. That's why they "matter". That said, if Flash is any good then yes that would be correct. SHIELD is kind of...I still can't make myself care enough to watch that.

Fixed.

They have no idea what they are doing and have not for a long ass time.

Truth.

They've long recovered from that crash. They're not back to 90's speculator levels, but people all over the world read comics now, either on stands or through Comixology.

The comics are still serving as the source material for other stuff. Ultimate Alliance 2 was based on the Civil War storyline. The animated Planet Hulk movie was based on the Planet Hulk storyline. The Guardians of the Galaxy movie would not be happening if the Annihilation storyline didn't take cosmic Marvel out of obscurity. The cartoons regularly take their stories from comic arcs. Hell, the Iron Patriot armor that appeared in Iron Man 3 made its first appearance in 2009. All those came well after the 90s crash so I would say that the comics still matter very much .

- A Good Ring-Leader of the MGU: For reference, Kevin Fiege is the main man behind the successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. His careful planning of each movie and how they connect to one another is nothing short of masterful. Some even say he's this generation's George Lucas.

... based on what? That Lucas made up a longform story?
