Mass Effect 2 Sells 2 Million Units In First Week

The DLC and all of the preorder bonuses are already available to pirates.

How did the message that the game was dumbed down reach the mass market?

How was ME1's loot much more than lip service to the term? The only items I can recall trying to get were Shredder/Tungsten VII which were annoying as hell to grind out between levels 30 and 40. I'd love to have a little more variety, but I'd rather see that tackled from the new research perspective.


and I'd still like to get a new Starflight game

Just install the .exe files and use the unlocker (giveme2entitlements.exe)
Set the game NOT to log in to the Cerberus network automatically. If you do, you'll need to run the unlocker again.

I think it's something like:

Mass effect: 2.2 million
Dragon age: probably around 2 million so far
Neverwinter: 3 million
KOTOR: 3 million
Baldur's gate 1 & 2: 2 million each

If it does go on to sell 5-6 million,it will probably become the biggest wrpg franchise.

Fallout 3 and Oblivion both sold around 4 million(as did Morrowind).

Well for 360 pirates they have to buy to get the free DLC or buy the free DLC seperatly. Though this is not just about pirates, this has probably swayed the people who buy games used.
 
I submit we substitute TMULTMTPPI(too much useless loot and too many things to put points into) for RPG since apparently the ability to play a role and make decisions as that character no longer suffices.

Bad argument. ME1 a good amount of RPG systems, they were shitty, but they were there.

ME2 is 10X the game that ME1 was, but has many of those missing, people feel that some of those elements could have been implemented in the game (but improved like the shooting was).

I personally do not care, a good game is a good game. But Please do not toss their complaints aside as if it has no significance.
 
i was only able to play an hour or so of it on Tuesday and since then I've been far too busy to pick it up. It's been torture. Huzzah, the weekend is here!

I just hate the sentiment that the removal of a bloated and unwieldy inventory and loot system is somehow dumbing the game down. People didn't like those things because they were poorly designed, not because they were too stupid to figure them out.
 
The reduction of RPG elements in favour of the Action aspects were disappointing (they've cut a lot instead of improving on the concepts) but as I said in the official thread, the awesome characters and world they've created overpowers the negatives.

It's a great package.

There are rumors Mass Effect series is coming to PS3, but it is only a rumor at this point.

Would be nice if Bioware and EA offered both games on one blu ray disc for the delay in release, if it were to happen.

This is part of the point (of those who care to articulate that much), they wanted the poorly designed stuff to be fixed, not removed.

ME2 certainly is an improvement, just not the kind that many were hoping for. So it is not that they want the bloated inventory to return, they just do not like the entire idea of one, to be removed.

Of course those condescending tones do not help their arguments...
 
I still think that the advertising was idiotic. RPG fans usually are hardcore gamers and as a result will be the ones buying this type of game day one/first month. The only games I could think of that wasn't the case is Bethsesda RPGs. They should have advertised imo toward more game esque appealing shows. Such as fringe or lost would have gotten a bigger impact and would have increased sales far more than having an advertisement during NFC championship game. It just seemed silly.

The game is a masterpiece though.

I want horrible loot, useless abilities, unbalanced combat, a cumbersome inventory, identical alien landscapes and spastic vehicle controls in all my RPGs. It's just not an RPG without these distinctive elements.
 
It appears that Bioware/EA hit all the right notes with exceptional product quality and great use of advertising. The ads used during the NFC Championship game was great. I had co-workers who don't play games asking me about ME2 on Monday.

I know they did a lot more marketing than just during the championship games, but this makes me think that publishers investing in a Super Bowl ad wouldn't be a bad thing.

This was more to do with first day sales are higher and shipments due to sequel than that ad. The advertisement was a waste of money. I wish I had the statistics to confirm this but that isn't the key to this games success more than the 96 metacritic score, the game is the sequel to a game that sold 2 million, and that the approval rate for the first game was high. Those are the main aspects for these sales most likely.

edit: on the last IGN Game Scoop! Greg Miller said that one of the annoyances of the game was that it was not on the PS3 to what Bioware's Cassey Hudson answered "It's still not on the PS3". But didn't said anything when asked directly when it will be... The industry worst kept secret?:D

I disagree completely. Plenty of high scoring games have passed the average gamer's consciousness. I had 5 people mention Mass Effect after the NFC game advertisement, even adults who don't play games. A lot of people assumed it was Avatar before the Xbox logo came up actually :lol .

And seriously. I know GAF is skewed from society's norms but I didn't realize that people assumed that their point of reference is the standard. People actually believe that PC gaming is even known about outside of message boards (besides WOW/casual games), let alone a viable option for your average big-release title? It's OK to say that PC gaming is "superior" but if you actually actually think PC gaming is in the average gamer/consumer's awareness you're severely mistaken. Poll your Super Bowl party next week and see how many people play games on their computer or even know titles like this are available for it.

It would be nice if Bioware had unlimited time and resources to fix every issue with every game they make. Unfortunately, they don't, so they do what normal people do and prioritize.

Bioware/EA hit the perfect storm for that ad on the NFC Championship game. Not only was that game one of the biggest watched games of all time, but it was placed at the perfect time too. Right after the two minute warning in a tightly contested game everyone was watching. They also decided to show the entire launch trailer ad (not the character bio ad), and it is very well done. They had 50 million+ people watching the ad at that time in the game.
