Mass Effect 3 DLC "From Ashes" briefly outed on Xbox Marketplace (spoilerish)

Damn, EA got me by the ball with Mass Effect and Dead Space, if it wasn't for those two IP's I'd never buy anything from them.

Then again, I'm a ME fanboy and I'll be getting the DLC day 1, I don't want to miss an important part of the lore, but that doesn't mean that this isn'n complete bullshit and I disgust myself for bending over.

So a lot of people think that Day 1 (A large and massive piece of) DLC is very unethical, right? I don't want to get into the argument of entitlement, since it happens on GAF way too much, but I feel like if this was developed alongside the game AND it's ready for launch AND it's a major aspect of the main game, then it should be included IN the game. I really feel like they're milking this and honestly boycott isn't going to help since the general populace will still buy it since they're so uninformed.

[devil'sadvocate]As a purchaser of the CE, aren't I entitled to a sense of superiority by getting stuff that the proletariat are too cheap or poor to buy? By offering an exclusive piece of DLC to the unwashed masses, my social status has now been tarnished.[/devil'sadvocate]

We are the whores. It's okay, Mass Effect 3 will be excellent sex. They just won't cuddle and will leave us in the morning if we don't buy the all new half-hour campaign for $15.

How can something as important as a living Prothean be DLC that doesn't impact the main game?

Two choices basically. There's either lots of Protheans around and you don't get to hang around with that particular dude, or alternatively Protheans don't exist outside the scope of the DLC.

yep

Also, Gamestop stopped taking CE pre-orders the day after the Retailer exclusive DLC was announced.

:/

I take it you guys missed all of the 'ohnoes! the factory can't make enough copies of the CE' announcements a few weeks back? Was surprised to hear that myself considering how many Halo: Reach CE's are still floating around out there.

Hadn't seen the artbook until I read this thread.
I wish the statue design from the first game (which are apparently of Inusannon now) had turned out to be prothean. The alien design is pretty bland.

Bioware official statement regarding the From Ashes DLC:

As most of you know, yesterday there was a leak that revealed the upcoming DLC “ME3:From Ashes” on the
Xbox LIVE Marketplace. This leak took place before we were prepared to make an announcement about the details of that pack (slated for this Friday).

There has been a lot of discussion about the DLC offering but we wanted to clarify a few things...

- “From Ashes” includes
the Prothean squad mate, an adventure on Eden Prime, a new weapon, and an alternate
appearance for every squad mate. Note that these alternate appearances are in addition to the ones already advertised in the CE.

- The Collectors Edition has been advertised from the beginning as containing a bonus character/mission, but we were not at liberty to provide the details. The Prothean is optional content that is certainly designed to appeal to long-time fans, which is why he is part of the CE offering (the version many fans would be likely to purchase). Mass Effect 3 is a complete – and a huge game - right out of the box.

- The content in “From Ashes” was developed by a separate team (after the core game was finished) and not completed until well after the main game went into certification.

- The Collectors Edition has been sold out in most places for some time now, and is becoming very hard to find (many players prefer not to purchase the digital version). As such, we wanted to make this content available so that SE buyers could also incorporate the Prothean into their game.

We’ll be releasing someimages and video about this pack in the coming days.

As always, we are extremely thankful for all of your support. We pulled out all of the stops to make Mass Effect 3 the best game ever, and we can't wait for you all to experience it.

Mike

Were people really expecting them to back off with the idea of having customers pay for it or have them write an apology about it?

And the part about the DLC being completed after the main game is dubious since the character was part of the script from the build leaked on XBL and that build was really old (where MS asked gaf to take down the thread).

Some strange logic there.
Didn't the game only go Gold like, I don't know, a week or so ago? done after the core game was finished my soft pert little tooshie!

And holy moly
back to Eden Prime
, and for 800 points I guess that is more than their usual DLC packs they threw out for ME2, hell, they tried to sell just a pack of 3 appearances for a couple hundred points alone.
But announcing a DLC that comes with the CE that every fan of the series would want after the CE is sold out mostly everywhere seems a bit silly, though I guess advertising it early wouldn't have mattered if you can't get a hold of a 2 of the 3 platforms CE at this point anyway, which to me is more of a kick in the balls than anything else.

Bullshit. There was plenty of stuff for the Prothean in the November leaks, and EA had mentioned him as far back as last June.

Bioware official statement regarding the From Ashes DLC:

Bunch of complete bullshit

What a complete scumbag move. It would be sort of ok-ish if it was just cosmetic items or weapons for SP, but removing a damn pivotal companion character to sell as day-1 DLC and having the gall of saying that they completed it after the "core game" (months ago) is just sickening.

Man that reeks of bull, we've known about that character being advertised as DLC for ages. At least come clean about it and don't pretend it couldn't have been finished in time for release.

Oh god, didn't want to know the location.

gah

Edit; Lol, "we wanted to make this content available so that SE buyers could also incorporate the Prothean into their game."

Common sense; Make it free

EA/BioWare sense; Charge 10 bucks for it, Day 1

That's some massive bullshit right there. Fuck them right up the ass.

Watch all the fans get banned for speaking out, lolol.

Check gohastings.com. I pre-ordered 2 copies from there last week.

I've never used this site but it seems like they do have it. Unless this is a case where on release day they send emails saying "oops we're out lol sorry".

Is there a season pass or similar?

They didn't have one with ME2, just the "Cerberus Network" for new copies that gave free access to the first few DLCs. I wouldn't totally write off the possibility for ME3, since there's now a multiplayer component, but don't hold your breath.

Also, I'm curious, PsychoWard, can you even access any owned Bioware DLC now? I thought it was all downloaded from the Bioware Social forums, and if they're completely banning you from even viewing that page it seems like you wouldn't be able to access any purchased DLC. (I'm pretty sure you could still buy it though; that's a separate page.)

I should go preorder the CE asap before Gamestop sells out.

There IS an online pass on top of this, they put up an unboxing video earlier today.

can you link me the video?

Nah, I just got banned from the forums, it seems they fixed that problem.

And also, I'm a console peasant, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a problem regardless.

Me 2. I don't care about their other IPs but Mass Effect and Dead Space are 2 of my faves this gen. But if it wasn't for the fact that I'm keen to play them, I'd have waited for the "Game of the Year" edition, which usually is not only cheaper but chock full of every DLCs included in the version.

Is this blatant lying being picked up anywhere or are the journalists too busy playing with their free games?

The best thing about it is the blatant contradiction.

The content in “From Ashes” was developed by a separate team (after the core game was finished) and not completed until well after the main game went into certification.

The game went gold less than a week ago as well. lol

Plus all of the info in the leaked script, which was back in December, and the original listing of the CE, which was back in June.

I don't care whether BioWare had a different team working on the DLC or that it was only finished after the game was finished.

The DLC is done as of now, so there isn't any reason beyond wanting to nickel and dime people with DLC why they couldn't provide a means for people to download the DLC at launch with any new copy.

God forbid they reference Deception's ending with that

Wahahaha. Bioware is so full of shit.

To their credit, it is nice that this is not exclusive. To counter that, it obviously never was intended to be exclusive.

To their credit, the game probably has been "done" for a while, and just undergoing polish. To counter- obviously this was done before the game went gold, which means it could have been put on the disc. Fully voice acted means it was obviously intended for a while to tie in to the game pretty intimately.

To their credit, alternative appearance packs run 2 bucks at Bioware for 3. So assuming like 9 characters: You are actually only spending 3 dollars for the new character and missions!

Edit: No manual! This is an RPG. You have crossed a line fuckers!
PC version better have a manual. I can't imagine a CE with no manual.

But dual sided art is a cool move.

Holy fuck, the number of people in that Bioware Social thread saying "yep, that makes perfect sense" is astonishing. Really? This makes perfect sense?

I won't lie, DLC does have it's advantages -- specifically building on a foundation and giving the player more content to play.

But in this case (and in any case of day 1 DLC, withheld content), there are no excuses.

To be fair, there was nothing, no data about Eden Prime in the second leak, more than the mention in the first leak that was practically a rough draft, so probably they're not lying about the mission being finished after the main game.

No justifying them of course, it should be free.
