Mass Effect 3 for Wii U has "Off TV Play"

I wonder why the devs put so little focus on this area (in the interview). It seems like such a major feature and definitely something that could win me over.

Considering how well this thread has received, this'll honestly be one of the bigger features for the wiiU that games will really need to support.

Everyone seems to be in agreement that being able to play that game on the screen anywhere in the house, beats using the screen as basically a bottom of a 3DS.

They probably think most people see this as a bonus, not a system/game selling functionality, and with all the work getting the touch interface good it seems logical to focus on that.

Yes, but some developers like Ubisoft have stated their Wii U ports have no performance difference from the PS3/360 versions, so I hope Bioware took advantage of the hardware to fix the terrible framerate.
I was being facetious with a hint of sarcasm.

Still you have to see that doing this would in reality make the innovation of the GamePad screen pointless. The reason for it being there is to add a second screen to the game. Yes, it's great to have the TV-free mode in some games (like multiplatform releases or other traditional genres), but it would make it impossible to create new and innovative dual screen games if it was required that every game must be playable on just the GamePad screen.

The GamePad being able to do this is an innovation.

The reason for it being there isn't to just add a second screen to game, its there for developers to utilize it in anyway they want. Nintendo made that pretty clear.

With that said I hope devs can somehow make it to where the game will utilize the screen for additional gameplay pruposes. However at the same time the game can be played without the need for it as well.

Much like how the GBA and Gamecube functionality was.

lets hope this gamepad has to range for all the toilet humor that would come to the MiiVerse

The door to my terrace is 3 meters away from my TV in the living room. That means I will be able to play my games in my deckchair outdoor. Pretty cool :)

So this function is not useable for games like Zombi-U where the pad is an integral part of the experience, right?

Seems to only be properly applied for (console) ports I guess. Because why have a pad functionality in the first place if you can relegate touch functions to buttons (I'm guessing here) if you switch to "stream mode"?

We don't know about Zombi U. They could offer a lesser experience as if the game was on a console with no second screen for the times you want to switch play to the GamePad only. Not sure they'll bother because this game is meant to showcase the dual screen play, however other games could do it.

People (not saying you) should stop trying to make it out to be bad that we have options, and bad if a feature can't be Applied to every game.

Glad to see people into this. I remember after this E3 so many were down on it. Insisting that Nintendo was going after the couple that can't communicate market. If this is built in the way it should be like in the main menu when you turn the console on WITHOUT switching TV inputs this will be one of those moments where people in the future will ask how we ever lived without it. It's too bad not every game will support it. That is a big downside into making this one of those "it just works" features like Live and Achievements have been. This combined with those "leaked" XboxNext set-top box features are my dream boxes.

Nintendo: "play games on your WiiU gamepad wherever you are in the house*"

*anywhere may only apply if your walls are made of paper

Nintendos wireless controllers, up to this day, always had impressive range. Would be weird if they would fuck it up now...

Already played ME3 but I'n so getting it for WiiU. The control options could make of it the best version available, not to mention that it was already a fantastic title.

Exactly.

Also, not every game needs to "innovate" by using two screens. There's also options of having the game running on the pad, while still using the touch screen in inventive ways. Two screens is a tool but even if it's not utilized well by a game, streaming is a damn nice feature.
