Mass Effect 4 Main Character called Ryder, FemRy confirmed default. Spring 2017

Is the game a visual novel? How can they be in the last leg of development and yet apparently have nothing to show for it?

Bioware's official line is that it's not that they don't have anything to show, they just don't wish to really show stuff off until much closer to release.

Supposedly they really liked how Bethesda unveiled Fallout 4 only a few months before release and want to follow that model.

Now if N7 day comes and goes without us getting a massive blowout, that's a sign that it's going to be be delayed.

still claiming that Spring 2017 release date, yet they barely showed a thing.

So later this year at some of the upcoming shows a proper reveal then, EA Gamescom?
Maybe they prefer to show more stuff closer to release date when things are set in stone.

Else it becomes another "downgrade" + "lying devs" situation again when it ends up different from E3 2016 footage.

Do whathever you want to do with your game Bioware...but for god's sake give male characters more hair options. The ME1-3 options were shit. I don't want to play bold again (even tho I fucking love the default Shep skin)

I'm not a marketing expert by any stretch, but is N7 that big a thing outside of fan circles? I mean, right now at E3 they have a global audience and the whole vlogosphere and games media focusing and reporting on it, wouldn't that be a much better venue to show your baby to the world?

If anything, GamesCom seems a much better place to make a big mark now that the E3 ship has sailed, at least compared to N7 day.

Or maybe I'm just getting burned out by these supposed 'blowouts' coming and going with nothing but fluff.

The problem with E3 and Gamescom is that you share the press cycle. So much is being announced, and so much is being shown off that you can't guarantee that you'll be the big story for very long. Just look at news sites right now and notice how stories are quickly falling off the front page and games are having to share the spotlight because there's so much news.

If they have their own event on N7 day it will mean that they'll dominate all the coverage by themselves for likely a few days. That's why I suspect they'll do their own thing for that day as opposed to Gamescom, but I could easily be wrong.

Tech companies nowadays seem to be moving towards own-organized events instead of sharing spotlights in major exhibitions.

It's Mass Effect. They could do a blowout in a Motel 6 outside Omaha and get all the coverage they wanted. Doesn't need to be at one of these big events.

How does scanned faces work with character creators? Are we just talking animations or are the textures better on the default one rather than custom?.
The default faces are scanned from actors, similar to the way default Shepard was Mark Vanderloo's face.

I've already decided how I want my character to look, so I anticipate spending hours in the character creator just to get it right.

And then after 4 hours in the character creator and 20 hours of gameplay, I will conclude that my character looks like an asshole and will try to change him.

Right, I know, but I was wondering if this also determines textures as well.

I could imagine a texture from a scanned face would be higher quality than one created by the texture artists themselves, so that might have an impact on the quality of the options in the character creator

True...I imagine they won't look *as* good but they've been able to do a lot more this time being a new iteration of Frostbite and current gen only. I felt they looked pretty good in DAI and they'll look even better here.

Hopefully, with frostbite technology, the custom faces will look almost as good as the scanned ones, unlike the default Shepard of the original trilogy. The texture quality difference between him and customs was quite big.

Yeah, skin textures and eyes were very well-made in DA:I for sure.

If only they could make technology that scans hair, then we'd be all set :lol

True enough. I think they improved drastically in DAI from last gen, and given the current gen nature of this game+new Frostbite version...oh yes my friend.

That probably take up half a CPU's resources lol. But they worked on that a lot too. It shouldn't look plasticy like previous efforts.

I really want female Ryder to be the default but the main thread for this on the Bioware forums is saying there is no default and worded it as if the female Ryder we see in the trailer is just the default female. Can someone who saw the interview clarify?

I never really understood people's obsession with what the default gender is in a created character, but to each their own.

I just hope the hair options aren't atrocious this time.

I mostly just want the female Ryder used in marketing this time around because it would be awesome for representation and also because every time I complained about the lack of femShep in promotional material in the past I'd always have some dude tell me it's because broShep was the default.

It would be nice for the female protagonist to get some spotlight this time around.
Maybe it would draw a bigger female player base to the game

If it's anything like the original trilogy, being the default won't really mean much apart from the character being on the front of the box, and it being what you'll get if you choose not to customise your character at the beginning of the game.

This is the only female Shepard I recognize.

Here's mine. I can't imagine Jennifer Hale being tied to any other voice.

The trailer definitely has a slow burn. While this is my most anticipated game, I was really disappointed by the trailer initially, and have gradually warmed to it over the past couple of days. It's better every time I watch it.

I really do this it was a big missed opportunity to know have a gameplay demo. I wonder if there will be behind closed doors sessions for journalists? I *need* more info!

It will be interesting to see how they implement the skill/upgrade tree. I actually preferred the system in ME3 (over ME or ME2) for upgraded Shepard and companions. The split path skill tree (choosing 1 of 2 options) for a give skill or power lead to changes that lead to significantly different combat characteristics for the character. I thought it offered good customization and depth, without being overly complex.

So now that there's Ryder, wat do we call guy version?

MascRyder?

ManRyder?

ManRyder really rolls of the tongue.

Only to restart 30 minutes later when the lighting is totally different, and you hate the face? :P

I saw Guyder earlier, that seemed like it would work okay.

Put me in the camp of those people who only played as Male Shepherd because he was the default option. I'm not very good at character creators, I'd spend ages trying to design a character, end up hating it anyway and then want to delete and start over halfway through the game.

If Ryder is a female by default than that's also my choice.

So? Do mixed people not count if their names sound white? Does your name change your ethnicity?

Not to mention there are Christian Indians with western names too.

And you know what they call Priyanka Chopra's (who is fully Indian) character (who is supposedly mixed) in Quantico ?
Alex Parrish !
