The one thing that bothered me about the game, besides the I WILL DESTROY YOU side missions, is the crap at the beginning with Eden Prime. I submit this to you: if there were video cameras on Eden Prime, there would have been no need for the boring beginning. Mass Effect takes place in the year 2183; did the amazing Prothean "mass effect," if you will, call for the destruction of all surveillance cameras.
What's even more stupid is that on your way to Eden Prime you get a video transmission from a soldier on Eden Prime. *FACE PALM*
You should expect an amazing game. Sometimes it can be tedious, but it's absolutely amazing, loved it a lot. A few technical hiccups may bother some, but they didn't get under my skin.
Are you saying it doesn't matter? I think it does; not only because it's just flat out dumb, but because the beginning of the game is slow and boring, and had they replaced the whole "evidence finding" stuff with something else, there's a good chance the game would be even better.

Eden Prime is there to show the player what they are ultimately up against. Don't know about you, but I was pretty amazed at what I saw, and it made me want to keep playing.
Mass Effect is awesome, but there are some cheesy moments that made me want to drive my fist into my monitor. The two "inspiring speech to the crew" scenes gave me the douche chills so bad. Developers need to be reminded these are games :lol
There was already a LTTP thread for this game, but whatever, not completely the same. My opinions (= minireview) of this game are/is HERE; in short, it's a good but very flawed game. The story engages you enough to overshadow the glaring flaws.
I completed both KOTOR games, and I really thought I enjoyed them simply because they were Star Wars. After playing Mass Effect for some hours, I realize that I actually enjoyed it for what it was. It pretty much feels like a KOTOR game, but without swords and jedis and stuff. Also, the battle mode is much better, as the game is more or less an action rpg.
KOTOR had plenty of flaws too, the second having the most obvious one (rushed ending, unfinished story). I was hoping for a KOTOR 3 to come out sooner or later, but now I'd be just as happy with a Mass Effect 2 - which we already know is coming.
It's probably the best (or very nearly at least) X360 game I've played to date. Didn't expect too much, so I was pleasantly surprised.
Im trying to get inot the pc version (no im not playing side mission), its the inventory system, Im not sure which weapon is better on who and there are a ton of ammo types, totally confusing me.

The different ammo and stuff is a little overwhelming at first. I ignored it completely for the first few hours until I got more familiar with the game.
As far as which weapon to use for which character, you can check their talents (skill points? I forget what they're called atm) to see what they're trained in.

What about the characters where there are no skill points in any weapon? Like Kaiden? Are the equally bad on all the weapons, and should I just give him the weapon I want him to use?

I actually have no clue, I don't think I ever used him :lol
If you hold Space while running around and highlight their weapons, it will tell you if they are trained or untrained for that type of weapon so that's one way to find out.
You will cry tears OF BOREDOM. I was able to get 8 hours into this before I passed it up. Better than Jade Empire but probably the second worst Bioware game ever. While the visuals are some of the best (not counting UE3 pop ins) and the voicework is up to snuff its just not enough. The combat is clunky, the side quests insipid and the loading is by far the worst outside of Soldier of Fortune for the Dreamcast
Yes, I went there
.My letdown of 2008, sadly.
Do yourself a favor and get BG/BG2/MDK/MDK2/KOTOR if you're in need of a Bioware fix.
I'd venture a guess that most reviewers set aside the relatively small issues and saw the bigger picture. The texture pop-in isn't exclusive to Mass Effect. Gears of War had it, Uncharted had it, BioShock had it... It's nothing new, and only lasts a few moments. The loading sequences via elevators were much better than changing over to a black "Loading..." screen, if you ask me. The empty planets are a valid gripe, and towards the end I even skipped some of them. I still loved the game though.

i hope they mix up the combat a lot as well, it feels really weak and clunky, whereas stuff like the speech mechanics are really well refined, the game design doesn't feel balanced imo
to clarify, for me, it feels like they almost built everything to accommodate the chat system

I agree, it's necessary to have something of a tutorial mission, and it's not the enviroment or even story (initially) that bothers me during that section. Here's the issue:
there shouldn't have even been a question of whether or not Saren was the one behind Eden Prime. The Council should have known because, logically, there would have been surveillance cameras around such an artifact. Actually, even if there wasn't an artifact, there still would have been cameras. Like I said, my local 7-11 has three of them. What are they guarding, chips and a safe with less than a grand? And the humans on Prime are guarding, at least, a colony, and at most, a Prothean artifact? Give me a break.
It's a stupid plothole which is sort of bothering because the "having to find evidence" part just seems so pointless once you start thinking about it. I know the developers wanted you to be at odds with the Council, which was a great idea, but they really just seem hopelessly dumb in that part. And so do the humans at Eden Prime. I mean, you get a video transmission which shows all the fighting...was that the only camera on the planet?
I'm clearly over-analyzing, but it really is sort of dumb. Mass Effect relies on its story, which is mostly excellent. But that part...hoo boy.
Uh, no. It's a good game. What the Hell is a FLAWED MASTERPIECE? A masterpiece is flawless. Mass Effect falls a great length from flawless.
You know what really irked me about the Citadel? The fact that there are SIGNS EVERYWHERE, and NONE OF THEM indicate anything. ALL OF THEM LOOK THE SAME, TOO. WHAT THE HELL, BIOWARE? LEARN HOW TO IMPLEMENT SOME LOGICAL DESIGN, THANKS.

Are you serious about this? If they were there or not it wouldnt matter because Saren is no idiot, hes more or less the top Specter and hes got an army of Geth, if there cameras around they would have most definitely taken them out and only after that would Saren have gone down to the planet and examine the beacon.
Ugh, I was planning on finally picking this up on PC. But some of you make me not want to buy it. I enjoyed the beginning well enough on a friends 360 though.

Taken them out? How so...by force or just disabling them via hacking, because from what I can tell of the VIDEO TRANSMISSION Shepard and friends are watching from the Normandy, he's doing the former, which makes him more of an idiot. Seriously, this guy is flying around on a hoverboard and controlling an army of Geth, and not one camera catches him?
And if he disabled the cameras via hacking or something, why didn't the story mention that, or at least show that? Seems to be a pretty big part, considering how sneaky Saren supposedly is, and how skeptical the Council seems, even after eyewitness testimony.
Maybe I missed an NPC that said "Yeah, all of our systems went down right before they arrived. Computers, security, everything." I'm not trying to be snarky here; did I miss some exposition on Eden Prime?

Not to take away from the rest of the game, but I completely agree, the beginning of Mass Effect is a prime example of an Idiot Plot. Afterwords though the story gets better.

Well, glad someone agrees. I think it would have been better had the Council known, but were just skeptical of what Shepard accuses him of being up to.
OH WAIT. They do that anyway. :lol
So, yeah, I'm still annoyed by the evidence gathering part.
I know what masterpiece means. Generally, when the term is coined, it usually refers to something that has an excellent confluence of the elements at hand. To call something a flawed masterpiece is contradictory, because it obviously doesn't demonstrate such a confluence. This, to me - anyway, nullifies the point of something being called a masterpiece to begin with.

No, you didnt miss any kind of explanation, its just an insignificant detail. Saren is as skilled as they come, he wouldnt let himself get caught by cameras, whether he evaded them or had them disabled. And he wasnt flying around on a hoverboard in Eden Prime, the Geth attacked took everyone and everything out and he came in after it was all done.
The whole point of the Eden Prime attack was to destroy the beacon and not connect to Saren at all, but look like a Geth attack. Even the Council said it themselves that humanity knew the risk of establishing a settlement near Geth space. And it would make no sense for them to believe Shepard that some dead smuggler who hid during the fighting saw Saren.
Eden Prime to me was a great setup that set the story but left you guessing. If any of the beginning was flawed it was the Citadel,
exposing Saren by just wandering around the Wards was a bit ridiculous, more traveling and exploration of other areas should have been involved

Please think about the word a little bit(or alternatively, look it up). It means, as one could imagine from simply looking at it, a great piece of work or more specifically the best thing a particular person or group has produced. "Flawed" is an entirely acceptable way to describe a masterpiece.
