Mass Effect to Land on PC in May 2008

Ya know, they still want to make money...

Which is confusing because who doesn't have a computer? I swear more people have a computer than the PS3, 360, and Wii combined.

It could be argued that computer software doesn't sell as well and I say "then the marketing departments need to step it up".

Yes more people have computers, but how many actually use them to play, or upgrade them every now and then, and how many of them just get the game for free...It's not only bad marketing that makes an PC exclusive release risky.

I also plan on buying the PC version just to count for 1 sale even if my computer can't handle it. Shepherds story needs to be told!

P.S. Anyone read the Mass Effect book? It was really good especially for a game to book.

I'm glad this was announced before Bioware got the memo about pc gaming being dead, and all. Now I just need a $2000 PC to run it though, right??:D

Oh shit, that's right. I forgot PC gaming is dead in 2008. So even if Bioware announced it, it still can't happen. They'll ship out copies are stores will just send them right back. :(

And yes, even if it did come out, you would need a $5000 Triple-SLI, quad core rig with 8gb ram to even play it at the lowest settings. and don't forget a very uncomfortable classroom desk to play it in. :lol

Players can assign biotic powers or skills to ‘hot keys’ allowing them to play Mass Effect with a heavier focus on action.

Is it strange that the PC will have "heavier focus on action" than the console?

Peculiar.

not really. All those keys on the keyboard can be put to good use, freeing up any need to go into pause menus.

Well yes, I understand the logic, it's just not usually the case. At least that's what I thought.

I don't think I will be buying ME 2 on 360 now. Think I will wait for the PC version even if it releases later.

This announcement is definitely going to end up cutting into ME2 for 360 sales significantly.

My original post was made as spite towards the current state of PC gaming, not any type of pro-console nonsense.

I remember how excited I was to be able to play the most innovative, story-driven games on friends/families PCs. I couldn't afford a PC back in those days; my family was extremely poor growing up. I had a NES and I didn't even think stories. I read books or watched films when I wanted stories and expected my NES to give me innovation.

Since I bought my PC back in 2002, I haven't found that same excitement PC games back when I was a kid gave me. Don't get me wrong, while it took me a few weeks, I fell hard in love with Morrowind and creating my own stories in Neverwinter Nights. And I'm a gigantic WoW fan and I love the lore of that most of all.

I just wish Bioware, Beth, Valve, or some other company (Lucasarts, where is Guybrush hiding?) would bring back the PC exclusive and make a game that's simply not possible on a console and presents a story that's mature and innovative that can't be slammed on Fox News because it's on some soccer mom's little lamb's Playstationbox3Sixtii.

The games you're talking about are here, and you're ignoring them. Play The Witcher, Mask of the Betrayer, the large number of indie adventure games, to name a few examples. These are all from the past year, by the way.

They're not changing the game balance, they're just eliminating the pauses to keep the pace going.

This was more of a when then a if as far as Mass Effect coming to PC. One thing though.... to this day I still don't understand why people think games released only on 360 and PC are bad for MS :lol

Microsoft Family wins either way.

Doesn't MS get no money off of PC titles unless they publish it?

If it's bad for MS they wouldn't do it. They even release Halo on PC down the road. Even gamers shouldn't complain cause they know the pattern by now, "choice is good' bla bla bla. Like playing these games on a 360, get a 360...otherwise get a pc.

Nah, I think I said it to many people I knew personally.

Last year when I began hearing about this new Bioware RPG game. I read the synopsis and looked at the cool weapons, and basically said verbally "Ok, you got my attention. I'm interested" THEN I found the offical site and it went like this.

*page loaded and some excitement with it*
Huh? Only for xbox 360?
*closes browser*
They can kiss my ass

Literally 5 minutes after I closed the browser I never gave the game the privilage of being a thought in my mind last year.

and now 3 months after its xbox release, they announce that they are going to port it to PC?
Sorry Bioware, I don't ride coach. Plus I have other more important games that I'll be playing. SSBB and GTA 4. You had your chance Bioware. You sit on the console player's little cock and now you want to sit on the PC player's cock? I don't do that shit. Maybe you should get pointers from 2K games (Bioshock). I won't be buying your game, neither should anyone else.

You are taking the console hatred much further than I ever took it, young Padawan.

Why is there not only happyness in this thread? Mass Effect is one of the greatest games ever created and Bioware/EA are trying to get that experience to more people so there opening it to new platforms.

I think the Unreal Engine 3.0 only has pop-in due to the RAM limitations of the consoles. It's probably the engine's way of handling not enough RAM and no install on the harddrive.
No its the way the engine handles the textures data.

The engine streams the textures on load so the level info is pulled up faster and the person can begin play.
Texture Pop-in occurs for about 4 seconds after the level has loaded.

Here's a screenshot from UED.

Cool news, I may consider buying this. With Bioshock, Gears of War, Mass Effect, etc. on the PC, I'll be more than satisfied with my PS3 & PC combo. :D

I was kind of taken aback to see just how many PS3 only gamers ALSO had gaming ready PCs. Couldn't make the connection between the demographics. Then it hit me. Neither one buys games.

Is it just me or are people posting "PS3 + PC combo rocks, gears, bioshock etc." just to read it again for themselves and to justify (or convince) that its a good thing not not to buy a 360?

No come on, it's great! These guys don't pop into the PC gaming threads, but they are just keeping it on the down low. Playing it cool. Maybe they don't want to upset their PS3 only buddies by letting them know they tag some PC gaming on the side.

This is what many of the console faithful do not understand. PC gaming has an underground army. A fifth column that only appears when the time is right. That time is whenever an X360 exclusive appears on Windows.

They will strike again. Be prepared.

So thats how it is...now, it all makes sense!

Good stuff.

Now, if I could just get a clear idea of when Dragon Age is scheduled to come out, I'll be in business...

gotta love all the "i was gonna get a 360 for this game, but now i don't have to!" posts

like any game would convince you to buy a 360 :lol
Why, when you can get a 8800GT and 2 games for the same price as the 360 pro by itself?

Has it been mentioned yet that the sequels are going to be published by Microsoft yet?
I guess some significant deals have been made between MS and EA, so the PC version comes out this early.

I can't see any other reason for MS giving EA the publishing rights for the PC but to secure the game exclusively for the MS Family.

Shard said:

It reads to me like EA will be doing the publishing themselves, the agreement is probably based on the fact that it will be for the 360 and PC only though. Oh and probably mobile phones.

Yea, that is about what happened.

http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=92564

While EA is revealed as the publisher of the PC version, it appears Microsoft will be doing the honours in the future - suggesting it will remain exclusive to the Xbox 360 console.

"EA has struck an agreement with Microsoft to handle future publishing for Mass Effect," said EA Games boss Frank Gibeau. "We are looking forward to releasing Mass Effect on the PC this Spring and brand new titles in the future."
