I've actually reconnected with my MGB and Matt Good love over this past month, after hearing about his health issues. I'm really excited for this album. I still think White Light was a bit of a misstep, but even that had some incredible tracks. This just sounds awesome from the single I've heard.

Do I need Itunes to hear the stream of the full album?

Listening to it now. Son of a...and here I was going to get to bed. The 2 1/2 tracks I've heard so far sound freaking epic and like the pissed off Good of old. Shit, this is one of the best musical surprises of the year if this quality keeps up for the rest of the album. Guess I'm not sleeping tonight just yet...

Yeah, this is a really strong album; enough to make me forget Avalanche, thankfully -- didn't even bother checking out White Light after that mess, although after hearing some of the songs on the Coma set, I sort of want to now.

I grabbed the stream (like with Sky Blue Sky) and can make the individual mp3s available later on if anyone wants them. And apologies if it was already mentioned, but who's the female vocalist helping out on "Born Losers"?

Hota, I'm still surprised that you were so displeased with Avalanche. I thought it was an incredibly epic album, especially as his first post-MGB record. So many amazing songs, including Weapon, While We Were Hunting Rabbits, House of Smoke and Mirrors...and you missed out on some great stuff on White Light as well. :)

Anyway, really pleased after having listened to the stream. Not sure if I could listen to this album steadily 'cause it kind of punched me in the heart last night at some point. Kind of like Loser Anthems...an album that can pull me apart.

I tried again recently and hated it just as much. "Rabbits" is seriously the only thing I can get any enjoyment out of; "Weapon" used to be good, but it's so worn out for me at this point. I basically keep the album around for posterity, heh.

Try A-Gayin
Try A-Gayin
Try A-Gayin

Haha oh man, if that's stuck in my head already, I can't imagine what will happen when I get the actual CD.

I like the new versions of Black Helicopter and She's in it for the Money. I loved Black Helicopter when it was out as a b-side, but this one's even better.

Champions of Nothing = Win

diggin' the new stuff.
i could never hate on avalanche...that disc is pure gold. i was less enthusiastic about white light, but i still enjoyed it thoroughly.

Yeah, I forgot how much I loved that damn guitar riff. Studio version makes it sound even better.

It's out and "Born Losers" is the free Itunes single of the week! Reviews?

Edit: The album is also available to be purchased on US Itunes for 7.99!

Bought my copy today. Sold a few as well.

What saddens me is that Matt is such a talented musician and lyricist, yet he never reaches the level of success he should. His fanbase is extremely limited (he's commented on being in debt for the rest of his life because of earlier business deals and whatnot) and he's lucky if any of his albums anymore sell 40k-50k copies. Compare that to a 'band' like Nickelback, who are probably one of the shittiest groups ever conceived, selling millions of records with the same recycled lyrics and music.

It's a pretty sad picture.

He's one of the very few artists I buy from anymore. I really wish he'd drop Universal for his next album and go solo though, I hate having to support the CRIA/RIAA.

Buying the album tomorrow, didn't get a chance to today.

The pre-sale for Toronto tickets begins tomorrow, sponsored by The Edge. Does anyone know if they're typically good seats?

Any other Toronto guys also plan to go?
http://www.matthewgood.org/shows/

I plan to...I wanted to go to his last two shows here (never seen him live), and somehow wound up missing both.

Problem is there's a few shows I'd like to get tickets for in September...Rush's North American tour ender, Genesis' North American tour launcher, and a Steve Vai show. And I'd like to get tickets to a couple of TFC games as well. Still, I might just grab a ticket for this MGB show next week and be done with it, since the other shows aren't vital for me (already seen Rush twice), while I'm desperate to see Good perform.

Gotta wait next week to pick up the album as well...I'm really looking forward to it.

Don't get me started...makes me sick the way the Canadian media kisses the ass of Avril Lavinge, Sum 41 and Simple Plan, just because they've "made it!" in the US. Matthew Good's got more talent in his baby toe than all those scrubs combined. I'd put him up there with any of the legendary Canadian music acts...Rush, Neil Young, The Guess Who. It's a crime that his work is so underappreciated.

Hospital Music is the last album under the Universal deal BTW...not sure what his plans are for the future, but I suspect it'll no longer involve Uni.

I picked up the album yesterday. I've never beena big fan, but overall I like the album as a whole. a lot of songs are weak by themselves, but they makes sense in the context they're presented in.

Been listening to this a lot recently.. really grows on you.
When you learn of whats been going on in his life lately.. and then listen to the songs.. some of them are pretty biting.. heh.

Matthew Good really is underappreciated. Easily the best thing out of Canada in the last 10 or more years. He should definitely be thought of with guys like Neil Young. The fact that he cant get his records released in the states is baffling.

For everyone griping about the lack of media attention given to Matt (and deservedly so), you'll be happy to know that he debuted at number one on the Canadian charts last week. First album of his to do so since Beautiful Midnight I believe.

Finally bought the album on Friday, and immediately threw it on a disc for the new Hi-Minidisc player I bought the same night, along with his previous solo albums and In A Coma set. Pretty fun having 5 hours of Matthew Good to listen to.

Hospital Music is just a beautiful album. I'm far more of a music guy than a lyrics guy...the compositions have to be there for me to listen, and the lyrics generally won't hit me until weeks or even months later. In terms of compositions, Matt's at the top of his game. These are my absolute favourite tracks, though most all of 'em are at least solid:

Champions Of Nothing
Metal Airplanes
99% Of Us Is Failure
Odette
The Boy Come Home
True Love Will Find You In The End

It's going to be a treat to finally see him perform in October.

Also gave a much harder listen to the second disc stuff from 'In A Coma'...Tripoli and Flight Recorder From Viking 7 are just stunning tracks. The latter sounds like the ultimate companion piece to Roger Waters' Perfect Sense Part 1...or hell, 2001. Haunting as hell.

I am now convinced that this album is one of the darkest, most depressing musical works ever conceived. I dare say that Matt's work rivals the likes of Dylan's sadder endeavours. Four years ago (and unfortunately two years after Audio of Being came out) I listened to Sort of a Protest Song, and cried. And again I teared up upon hearing 99% of Us is Failure.

man, i've listened to most of the album multiple times now, and i'm really digging it, which is surprising since i wasn't expecting to love it since i wasn't a huge fan of In A Coma (aside from the acoustic greatness of course) and apparently this disc was made when he was really depressed

but man, songs like Metal Airplanes, Black Helicopters, and especially Champions of Nothing... great, great stuff

??

Coma is a 'greatest hits' kind of package; that's like saying you weren't a fan of anything he's released before Hospital...

Matthew Good. I'm so fucking there. My last and only tie to the canadian nation.

:lol i guess that's why i didn't love it

all i'd remembered from Coma was fucking LOVING that acoustic side and not listening much to the other side at all (aside from his new single)

this is the same way i felt about the Foo Fighters' latest disc, which was one half music, one half acoustic, so i guess i just equated Coma as being the same, without remembering that the music side of the disc was just a compilation :lol

i still gotta watch the DVD that came with that thing, it's been sitting next to my TV forever

Have you checked out his much older stuff like Beautiful Midnight? That's what got me into Matthew Good when I was in high school.

I think I listened to the album at least 30 times the past couple days, and it hasn't grown tired yet. I almost had to force myself to stop listening to it.

I still need to buy his group albums, but money seems to be getting tighter as the summer winds down. Hopefully I can pick up at least a couple of them before his October show.
