Max Payne Replay Thread - Journey through the night once more

OK. Something isn't working for me.

I turned off all AA to make sure it was working, and it was a jagged mess, so these settings are netting me some AA. My screen caps are posted above with these settings in Inspector.

And I still see jaggies as you can see in my pics. Am I expecting too much?

I'm in! Re-installing Max Payne 1 now.

Also might try it on iOS when it comes out tomorrow. Screens looked surprisingly great.

Bought them both a while back, had never played them before. About halfway through the second one. Man the dialogue is cheesy as fuck, but it's fun. The tone of 3 looks way different to what the 1st and 2nd have set up, but I'm hyped nonetheless.

Nah, you shouldn't be seeing any jaggies. I can't find anything wrong with the profile, do you have the game using any AA? Other than that I can't think of anything that would be causing the issue.

Alright! I was about to start Max Payne 1 on my 360 but I noticed that I had bought both of them on Steam a couple of years ago so, PC it is!

Installing the first one right now.

"Outside, the mercury was falling fast. It was colder than the devil's heart. Raining ice pitchforks as if the heavens were ready to fall."

This first subway level in MP is such a great opening.

Does anyone have a GIF of the reload animation in Max Payne 2 where time slows down, the camera zooms in and spins around Max?

Loved that feature.

Doesn't look right to me. Too sped up, but best I can find atm.

I love the look of that, but it makes no sense! How does spinning around in a circle reload your guns?!

It just looks cool, so it's alright.

I have no idea why they put that in, but it did look cool as fuck.

Also in MP2, why was Max so damn fast compared to everyone else in bullet time?

I could shout a guy from 20 feet away and be right next to him before he hit the ground.

Like Max was some kind of, hard boiled rogue ninja .

Ahh two of the best shooters I've ever played! The storyline and dialoge alone makes them worth it.

Wish the movie wasn't so bad and hopefully 3 is at least decent but it looks like they've taken out all the neat things.

Goodness, I just replayed through The Nightmare in Act II. That dream sequence still freaks me out. I spent nearly 10 minutes walking in circles as Max's baby cried, and his wife kept apologizing. When I hit the bloody trail, I kept quick saving and jumping to my doom. One thing I didn't remember was walking into the bathroom, the shower glass shattered and and planks slammed to shut the bedroom door. I definitely jumped. This game's nostalgia is making me sad- it's so good, and it reminds me of being a younger gamer. Everything felt so fucking novel!

Two for the style, two for the lolz.

Love the little details, like Max's alliance ring. Also, crates everywhere, Wolpaw would be pleased. :)

And this little montage as a bonus.

Still love Max Payne 1. It's a terribly stylish game and, while simple, the gunfights are incredibly satisfying : the bullet-time, the sounds of the ennemies and the weapons, the controls, everything comes together. Add to that the cheesy noir narration and you have definitely one of my favourite games ever, with each replay I love it more.

Just got to Punchinello manor. This game really is absolutely merciless :)

Also if anyone has a creative sound card and has problems with the audio, just install ALchemy and manually add MP to the list. Works perfectly for me.

God, this game is still so good. I must admit that in the second act, I've never been too fond of the Cargo ship. I think part of it was remembering how I struggled to shoot the little wood block from the gated fence to send that trailer rolling. I never forgot how to progress in that area. Killing Dime in Chapter 3 "With Rats and Oily Water" was so glorious- throwing grenades and setting the flammable tanks on fire as he blew up in slow motion still felt awesome.

The "No Payne, No Gain" chapter really is marked departure from all the action heavy shooting. Navigating through that burning restaurant still feels tense, as you have to keep moving quickly before the entire building is engulfed in flames. And heading towards Punchinello's manor to exact sweet revenge on "The Trio" feels god damn exhilarating.

Phew! Act 3 now, feeling great!

Went ahead and added the 1440 x 1080 res you mentioned earlier but I'm still getting Fat Max even after messing with all the scaling settings in NVIDIA control panel :|

Guess I'll just deal with with.

You're not using any AA bits.

I replayed Max Payne 1 a few months ago. Man, this game is still so darn good. And the environment textures are to die for, they put many modern games to shame. Playing this in beyond-HD resolutions is orgasmic.

Will soon replay Max Payne 2.

Right, either I'm playing this on hardest difficulty by mistake or Max Payne is fuck-tonnes harder than I remember.

It really is unforgiving. It's not actually that difficult, but it punishes you hard if you stop moving for even a moment, plus it throws in a bunch of cheap shots like random grenades and traps to keep your finger on the quicksave key.

Actually I'm the opposite in this case and I'm not having nearly as much trouble with it than I did years ago. Enemies have a lot of trouble hitting you if you're constantly strafing.

Grabbed MP1 on iOS since I need a Payne fix and the first two aren't on PSN and I can't play them on my old laptop. It's kind of clunky on the iPhone but it works really well on the iPad after I moved around some of the buttons. Man, the game as aged really well in terms of level design, presentation, and gameplay. Really enjoying it. Definitely worth the $3. I just wish I had a way to replay 2 again before 3.

Rolled through the first 3 levels of MP1 this afternoon and I had forgotten how wonderful the writing was. It will take a miracle for Rockstar to match Sam Lake's metaphors.

Beat Max Payne 2 on Dead On Arrival in about 3.5 hours, was surprised at how much I remembered the game; I knew where all the enemies were before I entered each room. Also I think I had more fun during the Mona sections this time around.

I got MP2 as an Xbox Original for the 360 and my god it's a terrible port. Aiming doesn't feel good at all on the 360 and the graphics don't scale.

I've made a terrible mistake.

Really? I played it on Xbox when it was released and I remember being pretty satisfied with it. IIRC it was a lot better than the PS2 version which was basically unplayable.

Maybe they screwed up with the Xbox Original version?

Oh and you guys should replay Max Payne 2 1/2 AKA Stranglehold lol.

More observations:

-The instances of platforming really make the game feel dated, in fact I'd say about half of my total deaths came from falling off scaffolding and whatnot.

-The dialogue and resultant sexual tension between Max and Mona is still unmatched to this day.

-The random conversations you can hear are hilarious (the rosebush murderer at the police station in particular), the trailers for Max Payne 3 suggest a deadly serious tone; it'd be a shame if the series' trademark humor is absent.

From what I've read in previews, some of the humour is still there in Max's dialogue and thoughts and there is still surreal black humour bits (nutty suicide bomber neighbor that wants to "cleanse in fire").

I'm playing through MP1 on my 360 at the moment. Man, so much nostalgia. I'm only in the opening chapters, but I'm dreading the nightmare levels as well as the final few levels around Cold Six. This port is running fine on the 360. I hope the MP2 port is up to par, I remember my original PS2 version not running well (though the story made me replay it several times, it was so good).

I'm looking forward to playing MP2 more than I am MP1 because it was such a damned good sequel. Kinda like the jump between AC1 and AC2 or Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2. Just the perfect sequel.

Also, Duty vs. Passion remains a fantastic track.

so many amazing scenes it's hard to pick one that perfectly exemplifies the wit and cleverness that oozes from every line

Yes, definitely way too easy to fall to your death when you weren't positioned correctly. For the apartment stage in MP2, the moment at the end where the scaffolding collapses downwards, dominoes-style onto street level, that would've been quite memorable had my first experience of it not been Max plummeting helplessly to his doom.

Still, great level design overall even though it got a bit finicky when using shootdodge all the time on those multi-storey stages.

And on that note, can't wait to get Max diving down the football stadium bleachers just to see the painful physics in all their glory =)

Edit: I'm betting on there being an unlockable, now high-def 'Sam Lake as original Max' skin available in multiplayer. Come on, they HAVE to do it, that expression is legendary.

Having a lot of fun playing the first game. I love the atmosphere of this game. The rundown apartments, the snow, the music. So great. And I really enjoy the conversations some of the thugs have before you round a corner. Some hilarious dialogue to be heard there.

Coming up on my first dream sequence I believe...let's hope I fare better than I did all those years ago.

Hahaha, I love that bit in AW.

Sam Lake's hair was so hilarious during that era.

The whole Valkyr induced second nightmare you picked an extract from is seriously genius. I understand that some guys find some lines overwritten (they ARE, after all), but the game feels like something really coherent, generous and self-aware.
And then you have this psychological aspect and this excellent comic-book and video game metareferences in this particular dream sequence, and it works even better because of the narration style, the atmosphere they created from the beginning of the game and the fact you're playing the story yourself. I should make an avatar from it. No, wait...

Did you guys shoot the elevator music during Part 1 ? Hilarious stuff.

Whaat. Mind blown. I've never shot the speaker, I kinda dig the music lmao. That's an awesome little touch, though.

I just got to the Ragna Rock club. This level really creeped me out when I first played it way back when. Might have to save it for tomorrow morning...lol.

Just started replaying MP1. I totally forgot about how the loading screens are actual shots from NYC with a comic book looking filter applied to them. Love it. Only like 15 minutes in. I have to go out for now, but will put more time in later today.

Never played either Max Payne game... Just ordered the PS2 versions of both from Amazon for $12 shipped. Can't wait to check them out before Max Payne 3 arrives!

I loved the ending of MP2, both games are awesome. Also the graphics of MP2 hold up incredibly well with AA/AF jacked up.

Man I'm so tempted to head back into Max Payne but I don't want to put down money on MP3 since I'd rather wait for impressions before I go for it. Don't get me wrong MP3 looks good but not full price good like MP1 and 2.
