Max Payne Replay Thread - Journey through the night once more

I played more of 2 earlier and I'm still not digging it. The atmosphere is still pretty great, but the gunplay just lacks something in the modern age, I feel. Doesn't feel nearly as satisfying.

Don't think I'll play any more because it's ruining my memories a fair bit. It's got me excited to see how 3 will be though if it's updated in all the right ways.

Play it with the Cinema mod, I feel the vanilla game's gunplay can be a little bland but Cinema spices things up nicely.

Tempted to pre-order on Steam as you'll get the first two games for free, but on the other hand... I would love to have a physical box.. Dilemma's, dilemma's..

Definitely worth going physical on this one. The PC box is the classiest thing EVER.

That thing hasn't left my shelf since 2003.

MP2's slip case is the best PC box ever.

Just wrapped up Max Payne enjoyed it quite a bit. I had never finished the third act before since I was easily distracted back in the day so it felt good to finally wrap it up. I have beaten MP2 though and am working on a backlog so I might skip that for now.

Damn Max Payne 2 is awesome. Much better than the first one.

Can't wait until I get home so I can play some more.

How come only now I'm playing this? Crazy.

"In that act of seeing, I am reborn."

Well, that was a hell of a ride. Now... now I can play Max Payne 3.

The second game holds up so much better than the first. I love the story in the first, but it's been eight years since I've played it and I loved and was frustrated by it in equal measure. Same can't be said of the second game. I'm surprised at how well it did hold up. Amazing game, gotta be one of the greatest games of all times. Going through the story again was great... one of the best told narratives in gaming thus far. The acting and writing are superb. Some of the little touches are great as well, the TV shows that mirror Max's life and internal struggles (MIRRORS ARE MORE FUN THAN TELEVISION) and the trippy dream sequences that show us Max's subconscious is not a nice place to be in (I like seeing that Bravura is essentially Max's conscience inside his head... would love to see something like that happen in Max Payne 3). Small touches in the dreams, I wonder who's hair is dyed red (Mona's?) and the little signs that say which Max is mad or insane or paranoid. Funny stuff. The gameplay holds up really well and it's still super fun to play and the ragdoll physics are still hilarious.

The sheer punishment he takes in Max Payne 2 is pretty insane. He gets shot in the chest twice, blown up, falls off the edge into a giant hole, gets shot in the head, dude must have severe brain trauma by the end of it.

Max Payne 3! I AM READY!

It's gonna be interesting to play Max Payne 3. Max Payne 1 and 2 and Alan Wake/American Nightmare are filled with things that scream 'Remedy'. I'm intrigued to see how the game now being "Rockstar" will influence it. GTA4/Bully/RDR all have a certain way and style about them that screams 'Rockstar'. I'm pretty certain the humour and writing will take a somewhat different tone, but I'm okay with that. I wonder if it'll seem like a pure Rockstar product through and through or if they will do their best 'Remedy' imitation.

Yeah, I asked myself the same question after finishing MP2 Yesterday and from the trailers of MP3, I get that it's gonna be a bit different, but only because its gonna be Sam Houser's take on MP. Not that its a bad thing. But the story dialogues, are not gonna have.....hmm.....that 'theatre' feeling that the first two had. Neat, dramatic, straight to the point, almost like a radio play. MP3 feels sloppy, dirty, dynamic and real, which I think, is a new direction for MP's story. We'll see, but I'm sure as hell excited! :D

Just finished the first game. The Aesir building is just a bitch at times when you're having to dodge levels of grenade launchers and laser mines but I got it done. Funny, you've got people complaining about the possible lack of TV shows in Max Payne 3 and the first game only had 1 with Lords and Ladies in the hotel.

Now for the Fall of Max Payne.

Funny, I finished MP1 3 days ago, then finished 2 yesterday. Today on a whim I booted up 1 yet again on the next difficulty up and before I knew it I had already killed Lupino. It's startlingly addicting.

I think my latent 90s shooter skills are beginning to wake up again because I think I died a total of 2 times from errant grenades in the entire first 1/3rd of the game.

There were a few TVs in the game with Address Unknown as well.

The part with the multi-tiered grenade launchers is easy if you just poke your head around the corner and snipe them. You're pretty safe.

Still going through MP 1. Trying to take my time (still way too much time until MP 3). Just met up with Vlad. Such an awesome character.

Played a bit with the Kung-Fu mod. The added moves are totally bad ass, but I've actually gone back to just the basic version of the game. Max Payne's gunplay is pretty simple by today's standards, but something about it is so satisfying. I love how quick and explosive the gunfights are. You walk into a room, make a dive or two taking out 3-4 goons within seconds, and the room is all of a sudden dead silent, blood splattered on the walls with everything riddled with bullet holes.

I wonder if it'll seem like a pure Rockstar product through and through or if they will do their best 'Remedy' imitation.
I hope not, I'd be really disappointed in Rockstar if that happened. Luckily, what they've shown so far doesn't seem to indicate that. Don't get me wrong, these first two games are among my all-time favourites so I'm glad they're sticking with the classic formula in part, but on the whole I'm ready for something new.

I highly doubt it based off what they have shown.

No, I agree. I want them to put their spin on it and not imitate Remedy. I really wanna see what they do with the narrative since R* usually does a great job with it. I was simply curious since MP1 and MP2 are written in a very unique way.

I'm loving the direction R* is going in though.

While I've got some questions about how Rockstar is handling the franchise, Remedy isn't infallible; I thought Alan Wake was straight up terrible. It had none of the stylistic panache that the Max Payne games had.

I wouldn't say Alan Wake is terrible, but mediocre is fair.

I enjoyed Alan Wake overall, but the writing and the narrative didn't consistently grab me the way Max Payne 1 and 2 did.

Still some great moments, though.

Ah thats right, there was one with Address Unknown. Ok then so 2 TV shows..=P

Just going through the opening of Max Payne 2. Wow, when you jump from MP to MP2 the differences and improvements are noticeable to put it mildly. Of course MP2 looks better but it's also the lighting that sells it too and the physics, it was just an improvement having the enemies react and go down depending on where you hit them. The firefights become more intense and gratifying with the improvements.

That said it's also easier since they tweaked Bullet Time to allow Shoot Dodge to no longer drain any of the hour glass like MP1 but on the upside it's also a lot better to be able to keep firing from the floor when you hold down the trigger and not jump right up.

I wouldn't say Alan Wake is terrible, but mediocre is fair.

Realizing that most of the game's combat takes place on 4 foot wide mountain paths against the same three types of enemies just killed my enthusiasm and unlike Max Payne the combat has less of a skill-based/speedrun emphasis. Also Alan Wake himself was an unlikeable asshole and basically the diametric opposite of Max Payne as a character.

Fucking sound problems...I followed every simple step for the sound patch and there's still nothing in the opening cutscene (fuck Remedy for making it unskippable and with no subtitles). All the files are in steamapps/common/max payne, I pushed C to convert, I tried launching from the batch file and as an administrator. What the fuck's wrong?

...I'm a buffoon, I just closed it before it was finished. It's working fine.

You sons of bitches talking about the Cinema mod for Max Payne 2 made me download it. Holy crap, this is awesome! Although the music selection when entering Bullet Time is rather ehhh.

Everyone (re)playing Max Payne 2 must download the Cinema mod. Also if you don't like the bullet-time music (which you shouldn't), I specifically asked the creator of the mod at the old 3Drealms forum for a non-music version; just download this and put it in the game's directory.

Do you have a Creative card? If so you can just download ALchemy. Otherwise I couldn't tell you. :(

You using 7.1 headphones?

Max Payne has numerous encounters that involve AI placed in ambush positions, often at a clear player disadvantage. A shotgun wielding thug at point black range around the next corner, as his pistol wielding friends stand opposite. A guy unloading an entire uzi clip in your face as he is scripted to sprint around a corner just as you approach it. Bullet sponge 'boss' characters that at first glance appear to function no differently from any other enemy.

In the grand scheme of things I don't really care, because Max Payne does emphasise skill based play. But the game isn't without archaic trimmings common with games of its era. Sometimes encounters punish you for no other reason than just because, where winning is often a consequence not of instant, reactive play, but knowing what triggers an enemy spawn, where they're hiding, and who to prioritise in a group fight.

That's how I see it anyway. Maybe I've just grown shit at these games over the years.

Just got back from Italy last night and ready for my series play-through

Wanted to say 100 percent agree with this post though.

Definitely looking more forward to replaying MP2 than 1

You'll need to unpack the mod then delete the overriding textures. There's an application you can find called Rasmaster or something like that.

So how does one install the cinema mod? I extracted the files to my MP2 folder but I don't see any changes ingame? Couldn't find anything on google.

I know right? The mod itself is amazing but some of the music sucks. I wish there was a way to delete or pad a 1sec mp3 file so it skips the fucking rock music shit.

Not a fan of PC gaming at all

Why not? Lol. You can hook up your DS3 or Xbox 360 controller, hook the pc up to your HDTV sit on your comfy couch turn the graphics up to 9000 use the Cinema mod? That's what I do, except using a console controller ( I like Max Payne to be precise, I can't quite get there with a emulated controller like the Ds3 ).

You can actually do it with Rasmaster or whatever it is called. Did that several years ago and it worked fine.

Can I continue the game from where I left off if I install this mod?
Based on my 20 minutes of playing around with the Cinema mod (I'm not feeling the Max Payne / Mona Sax models at all) you can continue your saves at the last spot.

Can someone explain to me how I can play these games on a 1440x1080 resolution? I can't find the option. I have a ATI card, so doing it via CCC would be great.

Thanks!

Yeah, I just saw a video and didn't like the new skins either. Can I deactivate them?

Though I'm not sure if playing with mods for the first time through the game is wise.

It's a mod, so you can modify the mod itself. You can unpack the mod with RASMaster and edit it to get rid of the skins and then pack it up again.

So it's not as easy as setting an on/off-switch however. Also deleting the skins folder and packing it up isn't enough either. They seem to be referenced quite a bit. If someone has a quick guide how to get Cinema without the skins, I would be grateful.

(Be aware that editing the mod and ini files and such can spoil you for the different levels, as you will know things based on the initialization options.)

Finished the two of them over the weekend. Not having played MP2 before I must say it's overall alot better than MP1. My only gripe with MP2 compared to 1 is the shooting, the guns feel more tame than in the first game.

Eh, no way I'll mess around with this.

Guess I'll just play vanilla then. :P

Hah, I've been replaying these for the millionth time and I didn't even know this thread existed! MP1 is a good game; an incredible foundation. But MP2 is one of my favorite games ever. It's just so damn good.

Man, they really nerfed the shotgun in Max Payne 2. In the first game most of the time it was one shot kill, while in the sequel that hardly happens, which makes you really vulnerable when fighting a pack of enemies.

A better way to balance would be to keep it powerfull but severely limit the ammunition.

Anyway, didn't like Cinema mod, so I just downloaded a blood mod and it's cool enough.
