Maybe this is why I find gaming less interesting now...

I haven't been able to chat online over Live for years and every time I try to play online I get kicked out of Live the first time, every time. This has continued across a move and a new modem. PSN is perfectly fine and uses the same router and modem.

I wold love if someone had suggestion for me (and a solution to my problem), but I'm still happy playing single player and online as a mute with friends every once in a while.

Still love gaming.

It's never an hour or more unless you have the world's worst internet connection. Stop being dramatic.

it took me over an hour to play killzone 2, hadnt played my ps3 for a few months, so system update, then a few game updates...PSN downloads have always been ultra slow for me, never have any issues with any other services, no port issues on my rtr, on a 50 mbps connection

On XBL updates take about 2 minutes to download, maybe another minute to install, game updates are usually under 30 seconds

this generations online offering sucks compared to xbox live on xbox vanilla and socom 2 on ps2. give me socom 2 remake and i am good.

I too have this problem. I didn't bring my ps3 to university with me, but I still play it whenever I go home for vacation, doctor's appointment, etc. So basically its a few weeks between each play session and I don't have much time to play before I'm gone. So its a huge pain in the ass because I waste my time navigating to the game, then it tells me my system needs to update but it doesn't just start that update. I need to manually go to system update, then update ps3 firmware, then go back to the game, then game needs to update, and by then often times I already lost interest or need to go soon.

And don't even let me get started with the getting demos and psn games. PSN is basically as unintuitive as PC gaming. Heck since my PC is on a wired connection, I can probably download a game on steam faster then it takes me to get started with a ps3 game.

If you hate the internet, just unplug the PS3 and play the game without patches and updates. I don't really have any issues gaming on my 360 or even crappy PC. I welcome patches and updates, make the games I love better.

Never seen one of these claims that wasn't over exaggerated. Even GT5's 30min install was optional.

Try playing Hot Shots Golf on a new machine some time. I will never make that mistake again and I LIKE that game.

It's also nice to see that 4.10 "fixes" the clock, only Sony has no concept of what Daylight Savings time is. My time zone is set correctly, but if I leave DST on, it's an hour off. If I turn DST off, it's the correct time. Great engineering work.

So when daylight savings ends/begins for you will the DST on mean it's two hours off? I ask because when I updated my clock the other day it was an hour slower but I adjusted DST and it's now correct. (It's summer here btw DST ends about March-ish for us).

huh so the twisted metal demo expires. they could've made that clearer from the outset since i too downloaded it and hadn't tried it yet. i don't recall it being stated anywhere that was the case when i was downloading it, though it was 3am and i was on my way to bed. either way, pretty bum move.

still these things just happen sometimes. i use my ps3 a lot, so the time spent updating etc. is minuscule overall (and today's update took about five minutes from end to end). i use my 360 so rarely that the last two times i've turned it there's been a dashboard update. I made a cup of tea and chatted to my friend for a few minutes, no biggy.

edit: i am a bit scared to put little big planet or GT5 in.. but ps+ should take care of those yeah if i play them, cancel the update then quit out they should download it overnight or something yeah?

game day patches too. I spend 60 bucks, buy a game, come home unwrap the game, shove it in my console and then have to patch the stupid thing. I don't get how developers get away releasing broken and unfinished games.

If you could at least download those big firmware and game updates in the background. This way the PS3 often becomes just dead for fifteen minutes.

I think the move update for Heavy Rain is about 1 GB big. And you have to download it in slide, no chance of picking up the download where you left.

I find this too- I only really use the PS3 on weekends, and sometimes a couple of weeks can go by without me turning it on at all. There is usually a lengthy system update, patch for the game I want to play, trophy install etc followed by the developer logos.

I tried downloading the demo for Kingdoms of Amular-after updating PSN and restarting, the download crashed out after an hour, 3 times. Did it really need to be almost 2GB for a demo?

At least you can download from the store in the background, the mandatory system updates and installations are definitely something that could also happen that way, telling the player that they won't be ready for use until the machine is restarted, something like that.

It does just feel like a barrier to getting started- I spend several hours a week watching bars go across the screen at work, I don't want to do the same at home!

(I don't have an 360 either, nor am I claiming that it's any better, I wouldn't know)

This is one of the reasons this generation sucks; consoles becoming more like PCs.

Pretty much. The PC/Myspacification of consoles is tiresome, and this thread is case Exhibit C for why I don't care very much for online "features" in my gaming consoles. The idea of having to check-in with a remote database before I can play my game is repugnant.

(brb bro.. gotta go, like, kill some Nazi zombies with my bff Josh. If you like this, like, be sure to Like it on my GamerScoreCard, dude!)

that's a bummer! on my ps3/360/wii, i turn it on and play games just like before

Yeah was thinking about this earlier.
1991, you had to wait less than 10 seconds to launch Sonic the Hedgehog.

Insert cartridge, with some luck it'll work immediately.
Turn on the console
Press Start furiously
Play

Now everytime I play I turn on my 360. Then I think "no, I'd have to install those to play because of the awful noise". So I roam, check my friends, search the marketplace for nothing, then boot Fifa12. Wait FIVE FUCKING MINUTES then, if EA servers are happy, play.

I'm old but I'm happy.

Exactly. The whole point in games consoles was that they "just worked" and instantly. This is what differentiated them from computers.

I grew up on a Commodore 64 which took 10+ minutes to load a game from tape though, so I never forget my humble beginnings :)

I use my PS3 daily and I don't have any of your problems.

And lol @ people complaining about patches.

Er, yeah, as I said, it's only if you don't use it often. And I'm not complaining about patches, more that poor quality control leads to so many of them being needed to the point that whenever I start a game it has one waiting in addition to a system update.

Um yes? In the context he's referring to, yes it is.

No constant updates? Updates only taking seconds? Achievements automatically syncing upon getting them? No need to download AND install demos/beta/etc?

Yeah, the 360 dash/user experience is FAR better.

As much as I dislike Microsoft and their lack of games these days, everything you mention is solved so much better on their console. Navigation on the current Dashboard, however is a chore. Social and films before games? Wtf MS?

Just turned on my PS3 for the first time in about 2-3 weeks, update was downloaded and installed in about 5 minutes.

So I turn the PS3 on for the first time in a few weeks tonight.

Okay, let me try that Twisted Metal demo I downloaded last week but was too busy to play.

Error. Does. Not. Compute.

Pretty much, if these guys dont want the updates just play offline?
One of the best trends of the modern generation is games getting patched reasonably quickly.
Its nigh impossible for devs to make glitchless/perfectly balanced games without it having be tested in the wild, some errors just dont get caught in testing....id rather the dev patch and patch again, than sit and wait months for a deluxe edition.

It took 6 months for Jet Set Radio to get patched.....and that patch was only available in Japan from one specific store.

Fuck that i welcome patches.

Are you really complaining that a dev is patching your game?

Day 0 patches are usually a sign the dev kept checking on their game after it went gold....would you rather at point of the release the devs go on holiday and let any glitches that slipped by run amuck for till they get back?

P.S Devs dont get away with releasing broken games....pretty much any game that has been released in recent years that was broken at launch has had pretty severe backlash.

A couple things...in 91 you didnt even have the option to play online with friends....you didnt get patches to games, if you unplug your console from live it works pretty much like whatever console you had in 91 did(just set it to boot from disk on startup)....if they didnt patch the game(which im sure doesnt happen everyday or anywhere near as often as to make it a huge issue) you'd be angry at the glitches....so devs are damned if they do damned if they dont.

Modern consoles are LESS plug-and-play than PCs.

There, I said it.

The truth is out.

I want to agree but my last two PC purchases were Battlefield 3 and Batman: Arkham City

So I turn the PS3 on for the first time in a few weeks tonight.

The ps3 is not a ps1 or ps2. There are going to be updates to games and the FW. Imagine ps3 without the in game xmb, browser, store, trophies, video plaback etc

Oh and games need patches too, especially for online but even to fix SP bugs or add new content. On PS3 patches seem to be like 200MB so not much. Try playing an MMO or MOBA.... Are you guys on 56k modems or something?? Only GT5 on PS3 has obcense patches really.

Oh and FW updates takes 10-15min to DL. Go make a sammich

I wonder what it would be like to play a system like PS3 or 360 and not have it connected to PSN/SEN or Live. Just put in the game, play. I've been annoyed by both systems for all these modern day connected problems and yet I never try that out for I am horribly addicted to FIFA.

I have PS+ so when I logged in I just had to install the update. It was pretty fast.

Went to the PS Store, download the Simpsons Arcade game, finish it in 40 or so minutes, went to a online match, took me less than 5 seconds to find one. Play it twice with online randoms.

Nothing to complain here, you just had a bad day I guess, sorry to hear that.

People complain about everything. Everything.

Its an amazing experience and i dont know why the patch haters dont do it more often.
IF they hate patches so much they should just play offline, and when a major update comes along set it up to download right before you go shower or something once its done disconnect the console.

For me the thing i notice the most when playing offline is no XX is online notifications.
When im playing SP games i disconnect just so i dont get disturbed by them.

Bring back Xmen 2 for the Genesis. You turn it on and the game is already running, not even a title screen.

Funny enough, when i got that game i honestly thought something was wrong with it, since it just dumped you into the game. Only years later did i realize that was intentional.
