Mayweather Vs Pacquiao to cost $99.99

I'm out. There's no sporting event I would pay $100 for. I still have vague memories of my dad and his friends getting pissed because of the money they spent where Tyson knocked out some guy early in the second round.

I'll go to a bar if I really want to see it that badly.

It would be so funny if they did a mutual finger poke of doom, tied in a double KO, and then laughed all the way to retirement.

How many people are out there that even care about these names? Most fans who would buy this only know Mayweather and Pacquiao. Most of these fights would be the equivalent of a WWE divas match to them.

Just because you've never heard of them yourself doesn't mean others haven't.

In comparison to what it used to be, it's fairly irrelevant.

The problem is the lack of American heavyweights people can follow. People need to broaden their horizons and look at other weight classes and beyond nationality.

It's still very relevant in the US and around the world.

In this thread, people who don't pay to watch fights and people who think boxing is dead lol.

I'll pay for the fight. Huge boxing fan. A drop in the bucket compared to going to a live fight. Again, this is gonna be the biggest fight in combative sports history. The same ole people who buy PPVs will be the target of course, plus pubs, bars, etc that will get it too. Any word on if this will be hiring in movie theaters? That'll be a good way for new customers to catch it with going to a bar or paying $100 to see it live.

I wish a network or ESPN would/could pick this up. Seems like the ratings would be there to make it worthwhile, but I'm sure there are longstanding reasons why fights like this aren't on regular television.

Hahahaha

There is always quite a bit of nonsense in boxing threads but this one never gets old.

Hey. I like boxing, but the lack of star power has turned me off. Also this fight is two great fighters out of their prime.

Yay, I guess?

And in terms of attracting young fans, boxing is struggling.

The NBC free cards are a good start.

Holy shit. That's insanity. I didn't even know you had to pay for individual boxing matches, I assumed you watched them on TV like everything else. No wonder its so irrelevant now.

The time when I even cared about these two guys as boxers has long past........should have happened frigging years ago.

Sorry guys, I don't want to watch your pay day.

How big is the core market that are still paying for boxing PPVs? I just can't imagine they are attracting too many new customers at that price.

According to this,
3 of the top 10 highest grossing PPV matches were in the last 5 years.

Mayweather's fight last year was the highest selling PPV event of 2014 apparently?

Also,
In Sept. 2013, Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez generated 2.2 million PPV buys, setting a record for the highest grossing fight in boxing history.

If that's accurate, I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes the biggest selling boxing PPV of all time.

I in no way mean this to be snide or critical, but I genuinely wonder if this would have been people's reactions to the Thrilla in Manilla. I'm not super knowledgeable about boxing but that seemed like a pretty good fight for two champs way past their prime.

Although maybe comparing Ali and Frazier to this card is a disservice to Ali & Frazier.

people realize that both these guys are pound for pound some of the best going still right?

I mean people are talking as if they've both run off 4 fight losing streaks and finally agreed to the fight--both guys are still agile, great fighters.

That's just insane. At least in team sports, there are multiple players and assistants. But for boxing? Where's does the money go?

I'm fine paying the $99 with a few buddies. I'm just not getting a damn cable box. Better be able to stream it through a console...

It should be no more $9.99

Seriously though the PPV model is really dying and this isn't going to help matters.

They are still great fighters, but they aren't what they were a few years ago when this would have been a better fight. Floyd is 38 and Manny is 36 and I don't feel like either of them are full-time boxers at this point, especially Manny.

It's also not a great fight aesthetically. Mayweather is a masterful defender and will force Manny to chase him around for 12 rounds. I expect Manny to eventually get frustrated, become sloppy looking for a big punch and lose a clear decision. If that happens, it'll go down as just another boxing match that didn't live up to the hype because people don't actually know anything about boxing.

Big event matches like this only happen once or twice a year. Most people who are big fans will throw a party for it like it's the Super Bowl or Wrestlemania.

By comparison, there are people who buy WWE and UFC PPVs every month.

Lol that's ridiculous. I'm glad I never got into boxing or UFC with those PPV prices. And I never will if they keep that pay model.

Yea, bar owners are so pumped right now. We are having a bunch of people over so its not that big of a deal for us, for 1-3 people though? Eff that.

Seems fair to me

It's likely to go the distance and its the biggest boxing match you'll probably see for at least a couple of decades.
.
The talks about this fight are getting into Ali/Frazier levels.

I in no way mean this to be snide or critical, but I genuinely wonder if this would have been people's reactions to the Thrilla in Manilla. I'm not super knowledgeable about boxing but that seemed like a pretty good fight for two champs way past their prime.

.

Pacquiao and Mayweather would've had to fight each other twice in order for the comparison to be apt.

But the sportstalk around boxing is hyping this fight up the same way Ali promoted the hell out of his Frazier fights.

This is the fight everyone wanted to see back in 2010. I'm sure the boxing enthusiasts will pay for it. The rest of us will watch it at a bar or stream it.
