In the Midwest there's fast food chain called Hardee's, which was purchased by Carls Jr several years ago. They used to make made-from-scratch biscuits for breakfast that were melt in your mouth flaky buttery amazing. They also carried fried chicken and biscuits that I thought was much better than KFC.

I still get a craving for their bacon egg and cheese biscuits to this day. McDonald's just doesn't come close.

Oh man, Hardee's fried chicken used to be great. I also remembered they had this flavored syrup machine so you could get like a million different flavored shakes other than the "usuals." I was in love with the creme de menthe flavor.

So, I did some checking, the last Hardee's Superstar I had was 6 years ago. 2002, then the Hardees in San Marcos, TX closed down.

Last week, Carl's Jr. triumphantly returned to Austin. I am here to report, the Superstar is still the bomb. Their patties are HUGE compared to most fast food places. So think and tasty. Bun was the same as I recalled.

So good. So So Good.

I also got their chicken stars. Still awesome.

Those were beyond disappointing when they were released here, overpriced, dry and not worth it:

JITB's sourdough ultimate cheeseburger. i saw this one time at a jack in the box on a roadtrip, and didn't bother to get it. havent seen it since, and i still regret it to this day

Pretty sure you can still get this by ordering the sandwich and just asking for a bread switch.

hardee's still serves the 'frisco burger, which looks JUST like that thing from j.i.t.b.

and the biscuits and chicken at hardee's are also still dope.

McDonald's DEEP Fried apple and cherry pies

Oh yes. They actually still have the deep fried apple pies in some locations, I think there are some in my city - I'll report back.

Anyone remember when Burger King started bringing food to your table? They had Popcorn at the counter so you could have something while you waited. That didn't last long :lol

edit: here's a news article ... and an interesting commercial

I haven't sifted through this entire thread, but I'd like to submit a few of my favorites:

Pizza Hut - Double Decker Pizza (later renamed The Insider)

It's exactly what it sounds like. A pizza that is normal on top, but houses a healthy dose of mixed cheeses in between two thin crust layers. This thing was probably loaded with saturated fat, but it was delicious and not too filling. Haven't seen it pop up in a long time.

That brings me to...

Dominos - Doublemelt Pizza

20041123DblmltDoor-thumb.jpg

Holy crap this thing was good. It was essentially a reworking of the double decker, except it featured a creamy blend of cheeses between the layers instead of the usual stringy variety. It was out in the fall of 2004 for a month or so, but never resurfaced to my knowledge.

Wendy's - Spicy Baconator

spicybaconator.jpg

Two 1/4 lb burger patties complimented by 2 slices of pepperjack cheese, god knows how many slices of bacon, some jap peppers (which I usually opted against) finished off with a spicy sauce. This thing will set you on a steady course towards a triple bypass, but my god it was tasty. Leaps and bounds above the original baconator. I have a feeling that it will pop up again sometime this year, as Wendy's works through their promotional sandwiches, but it should really be a staple of the menu.

All Taco Bells here also used to have Mexi-Nuggets that are now gone. Think tiny, seasoned tator-tots that came standard with each meal, in addition to what you would get now.

I remember that Eastern Washington state didn't have Mexi-Nuggets, whereas Western Washington did.

You have Taco Time in Oregon, right? They still sell them.

For the record both Churches and Hardees are alive and well in the south.

I had forgotten about Hot and Now though, those didn't last long here :lol

We've just started getting Churches and Carl's Jr. in the Seattle area the last year or so. I'm so happy, a friend and I used to do weekend roadtrips to Portland, OR for Carl's Jr. about ten years ago when we were in high school.

I had the ultimate McDonald's near me. They not only delivered but they also had days of the week where you could get all you can eat McDonald's. The only limitation on their all you can eat was that you could not order Chicken McNugets and Orange Juice! :lol

Sadly they no longer offer either service now. :(

Also I know they are not fast food but remember Planters Cheese Balls!!!

They only recently took these off the market

The fact that these are gone is a travesty.

Also, remember when KFC had chicken nuggets? They were amazing, and the sauce they used to serve with them...drool.

Great thread!!! I remember Burger Chef when I was very little, late 70's early 80's. They had my favorite kids meals as they came in a boat shaped box with stickers.

Something that I will always miss is the wraps from Long Johns. You could get chicken or shrimp with different flavors. So delicious.

Now for Mcdonalds, I worked there from 1990 till 1999 and this thread brings back alot of memories. The pizza was not always frozen but made fresh. The frozen Pizza was actually better tasting though. I was regularly the closing manager and helped myself to these all the time.

When I started there they still had styrofoam and I hated it when we switched. Big Macs were a pain in the ass to make with the stupid cardboard collars.

My favorite sandwich though was the already mentioned SuperHero. Came out during a tie in to one of the Batman movies as the "Taste Of The Month". Was so good that we kept it for an additional month. Up until I quit I would still make these for myself with the McRib buns whenever we got them.

That's good to hear, used to get them all the time when I visited TB.
The Double Decker and Oh, never forget the The Enchirito were perhaps the best things at Taco Bell.
The hell are you two talking about? The Double Decker is still on the menu, and so is the Enchirito. I know this because I frequently buy them both, eat the Enchirito first, and then fill the DDT with the leftover sauce and cheese.

Edit: In fact I now hunger for this meal and will eat it tonight on my lunch break and take pics for all of GAF.

I was waxing about the Pizza Hut Priazzo. Welcome to 2 (or 4) pages ago...:lol

You know, when I was a kid, and before McD's had deep fried apple and cherry pies, they had deep fried pies which had FRUIT COCKTAIL in them. THOSE were beyond good!!!

Certain items are regional. It might be on the menu in one place, but not another. See: mexi-nuggets.

Evansville Indiana (where I live) was host to the McDonands Diner experiment. If you never saw these, they basically turned McDonands into an old-style diner restaurant ala Steak 'n Shake or Denny's. They totally redesigned the stores inside and out and you would order at the table using a telephone. They would call you to notify your meal was ready to pick up at the counter.

But the strangest part was that along with the regular McDonald's items you could order stuff like meatloaf and mashed-potatoes and even mix-and-match. They also continued to be a regular walkin/drive-through McDonands at the same time.

mcd_diner2_20030104.jpg

I may still have one of the paper to-go menus. If I still do, I'll post pics tonight. From best I can tell they only tested this in Indiana but I could be wrong.

I think they had one of these up in Kokomo as well. I never bothered to head up that way to check it out.

we've got a diner mcdonalds in our town, but it never had meatloaf. this is going to sound nuts, but i'll bet mcdonalds knew how to make a good meatloaf.

Wikipedia teaches me that this is still available in Mexico under a different name.

Not to derail, but...

Fuck yes. When I was in Mexico 4 years ago, they had Pepsi Fire (cinnamon) and Ice (mint). Fire was pretty awesome, didn't get to try Ice.

Also, McDonalds around here (northern IL) still have the pancakes during breakfast hours. However, Hardee's breakfast pales in comparison to what it once was. Twas sorely disappointed when I went there a few months ago for it.

I know my local McDonald's still has pancakes in the morning. Also, for some reason, I thought their Big Breakfast included pancakes, but apparently not.

Edit: Just looked it up, apparently the Deluxe Breakfast includes pancakes.

The Arch Deluxe was the shit. I remember getting a shitload of free coupons for it out of Vibe, maybe it woulds till be around if I had paid for them instead... but probably not.

Arch_Deluxe_Composition.gif

schematics.

extra fancy ketchup the key component. i've seen people try and use regular ketchup, and i've had the local e.r. on speed dial ever since. structurally it just can't hold without extra fancy.

*Click the tasty looking burger for a crappy yet somewhat entertaining video I found on youtube while looking for the old Arch Delxue commercial with Ronald dancing...

I hold something of a requiem for the Subway Seafood and Crab. Supposedly it's still available in some parts of the country, but I haven't been able to find it in California for the last few years. What a pity.

Yeah, I know it could probably be recreated if I felt like gathering all the ingredients. But it was still my disgusting, mayonnaisey fast food treat.

This was damn good :lol

The Taco Bell burger looks like Taco John's taco burger, which you can still get today and it's one of the staples of the menu. Makes me really, really crave on in fact.

I will add that I miss the Bigfoot. Back in my more unscrupulous years we would always compete over who could eat more slices. Fuck, that was good pizza.

Ok, so small update. When I went to Carls Jr. today it looks like they are not 100% up and running yet in Austin.

Some menu items have a "coming soon" home made sign slapped over them. It appeared to be the chicken sandwich stuff. Who cares.

What was amusing is my coworker (transplanted Californian who wanted some) noticed that half of their shit (napkins, fry holder) said "Hardee's" on it. He didn't know what the fuck a Hardee's was so I had to tell him.

Is it the new one on highway 71 just about 10 minutes south of the Austin Airport? If not, then the Austin area has 2 Carls Jr. I saw it yesterday

There are several in Austin, it's just they are all on the outer edges of town.

The one I went to was on South First and Slaughter. There is one in San Marcos and another one up in Cedar Park. It looks like a few have opened up and a few more are under construction.

Where did they have this glorious sandwich? I have to spend more to hand make it.

Jack in the Box. Its called the Outlaw Burger. They had a chicken version too. INSANELY Delicious.

ha Jimmy Kimmel was just made a small joke about the Mcdonalds DLT...I only knew what it was because of this thread. Thanks GAF

Isn't that a cheeseburger/chicken sandwich? Anyway, go to Wendy's, get a Jr. bacon cheeseburger and a crispy chicken sandwich. Put the chicken on the beef and nom nom nom.

Any child of the 80s cannot forget the Muppet Babies toys from Mcdonald's.

Also, I miss the styrofoam containers. Especially the one for the nuggets!

Ha, I have those toys, along with tons of others, in a big metal tin packed away in my dad's closet. Good times.

Anyone remember the Grande Taco, Fiesta Taco and Taco Light from Taco Bell?

Early 1990's menu items that were insanely popular (especially in this house), but mysteriously vanished around 95' or so and have never returned. Not even once.

I'd gladly trade in those awful crunchwraps and mexican pizza garbage for an overflowing bag full of Fiesta Tacos.

Oh damn, that sucks. Doesn't really make much sense either since they all use the exact same ingredients as everything else on the menu. Like, an Enchirito is a bean and meat burrito on a plate with cheese and sauce poured on it. Can you still order them, even if they're not on the menu?

Anyway, as promised:

IMG_0045-1.jpg

They were delicious.

Ah, I assumed they were more regional. I know they were in Iowa where I lived, but not out west in Oregon where I've since moved. Gawd I miss those things.

There's Hardees in Montana, but that might be a far drive..

I *think* the Big Montana is still here, but I'd have to check the next time I go to the mall.

Oldest thing I remember liking was the "Hero Burger" at McDonalds when Batman Returns came out; it was something like a hoagie roll as the bun and it had 3 patties staircased with cheese. Could only eat about half of it and save the rest for the next day.

Well I guess if there's any chance the Big Montana is around somewhere, it would be in....Montana

I think I remember it being at the Arby's at the mall within the last couple years, but it's been awhile since I've been there. I'll try to look though.
