From Traders video game division director in Tokyo's Akihabara district, Toshikazu Kobayashi.

Used game rankings for 9/30 - 10/6

1. PS2 Super Robot Taisen Z
2. NDS Quiz Magic Academy DS
3. PSP Phantasy Star Portable
4. NDS Dragon Quest V
5. PS2 Persona 4
6. PSP Monster Hunter Portable 2 G
7. NDS Pokemon Platinum
8. 360 Infinite Undiscovery
9. PS2 Kinnikuman Muscle Grand Prix Max 2 Tokumori
10. 360 Tales of Vesperia

I always love his figures, do we have any idea on any type of numbers of copies of used game sales in Japan?

I know RT was a 2006 game for the GBA, but that did only 200k in its lifetime. I mean, holy shit. RTG sells 25% of what the the original one did every single week.

I think the arcade version might have helped a bit too, as it seems to be relatively popular when I visited Tokyo last month.

It's a horrible week for software. 10th place selling 8k? Gotta be the lowest in awhile.

While that's true, the total software units sold in the Top 10 this week are actually above the equivalent week from last year (though well down from 2006, when Diamond/Pearl were still holding up huge numbers.) If you look at this week historically, the lowest title did 9k in 2005, the lowest did 15k in 2006, and 16k in 2007.

Essentially, I wouldn't disagree that this is a low-ass week but I think the relative lowness of it is overestimated a little here, and I think the DS is the least culpable system:

  • The DS isn't throwing multiple 4m+ sellers up the charts all the time anymore, but it's still got two million-selling (or soon to be) titles in the top 5, helping hold up the overall sales in this slow week.
  • The PSP's current launch is smaller than the kinds of titles (Pokemon, Dragon Ball, etc.) that have anchored this week in the past, and none of its most recent hits (like P*P) are still in the charts.
  • PS2 continues to fade overall.
  • Wii has been underperforming all year as a result of poor efforts by third parties and lousy scheduling by Nintendo.
  • HD systems... :lol

The DS is essentially the new PS2 here but it can't be relied upon (or at least, is not relied upon) to launch many random properties that have helped buffer the charts in the past -- anime tie-ins, musou, and on and on -- and so between the incredibly split market and the general underperformance of all non-DS systems, I think there's some drag on the market as a whole.

It doesn't look like Musou 5 PS2 is going to do as good as Gundam PS2 did. I guess word of mouth is worse, although I don't know how are the PS2 versions specifically. Things to note, the PS3 Musou 5 first week was just 2 days of sales and there was a 360 version on the same date, so it was slighty bigger than Gundam PS3, but Musou 5 PS2 is down from Gundam PS2 numbers.

PS3 Gundam Musou - 171k - 47k - ... - (317k)
PS2 Gundam Musou Special - 148k - 55k - ... - (276k)

PS3 Shin Sengoku Musou 5 - 176k - 73k - ... - (362k)
PS2 Shin Sengoku Musou 5 Special - 115k - 43k - ... - (?)

Will be interesting to see how Gundam Musou 2 does when it launches on the three platforms at once.

I'm still surprised by Macross numbers. Finally found other Macross titles numbers, and yeah, that's a Sega Saturn title there:

I stand corrected :)

Hey, I'm kinda curious, could anyone post up the sales figures of the other Super Robot Wars games on the PS2? So I can compare them to Z

Galactic Fork

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
And Inazuma 11 continues to stay on the charts. I wonder how Level 5 feels about its performance. I hope they weren't expecting another Layton. I think it's doing really well. (Though it's only as high as it is because the number 10 spot is 8k sold. So I11 is probably about 6 to 8 k.

So happy to see that the 360 isn't the deadest console in Japan anymore!

...

It's now among the other dead consoles. :lol

I hope the LR bundle next month helps it again.

Pretty sure the reason behind PS3 being so low is that the 80GB launches later this month (the 30th) at the same price as the current 40GB and with GT5 Prologue Spec III packed in for free. You'd be a fool to buy one right now.

So there's potentially going to be another 2 weeks of MC showing slowing sales for PS3 before the new SKU arrives? Any idea what games are on the way to PS3 over those 2 weeks? Could the 360 stay above PS3 for 7 weeks in a row? I fully expect PS3>360 when the 80GB arrives though.

After the new SKU launches and games like LittleBigPlanet and White Knight Chronicles hit, I'd expect nothing more than the PS3 to crush the 360. Anything less than that, and someone at SCEJ will probably have to fall on their sword.

Nothing noteworthy. I believe NBA Live and something else. PS3 will certainly continue to drop and probably stay below 360 until the 30th when the new SKU, LittleBigPlanet and GTAIV launch.

Don't forget The Last Remnant with it's bundle on 11/20. There's a good chance 360 will jump above PS3 again for a week or more there. But when that fades out PS3 should stay consistently on top(at least until.. when is it SO4 hits? February? But then that will be short lived with the FF bundle incoming). They'll have a good New Years as far as the battle for second place goes, since WKC launches the week before.

Hmm.... LittleBigPlanet should fix this. At least it better for Sony's sake. They seem to be placing a lot of faith in their own titles this fall rather than the price, lets see how that works out for them.

Hmm, the Best edition has been out for a while now.

The anime must've sparked interest in the game.

Yay Abyss. Deserves the surge. Anime's not half-bad so far either. Mieu needs to die in a fire though :(

This is PlayStation 3's worst week ever by far, right? By over a thousand units? I can't even keep track anymore because it keeps breaking its own record.

Sony started their ad blitz for LBP this week and to be honest, I don't think its very good.

It really does not show why LBP is a big deal. They should learn more from Nintendo. Stop all the conceptual shit and show the people what the game does and why it would be fun to play. Random gameplay footage after some weird live action thing isn't gonna get anyone interested.
